A New York State Waterfowl Identification Course for youth is scheduled at the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center from 2:30 to 6 p.m. Sept. 21. This class is for both youth and parent/guardian who wish to participate in the up-coming youth hunt at the refuge. Space is limited to the first 30 participants to sign up; you must sign up in advance by calling the Refuge at 315/568-5987. Proof of course completion is required to hunt waterfowl on the refuge. The 2013 Youth Waterfowl Season for New York's Western Zone is tentatively scheduled for Oct. 12, 13. The Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge will participate by hosting a Youth Hunt that Saturday at the refuge's Tschache Pool. To register for the youth hunt at the Montezuma NWR, you must call the refuge's Hunter Check Station, 315/568-4136, on Thursday, October 3, between 8:30 and 9:00 AM, to make your reservation. Reservations are taken on a first-come, first-served basis (there are 20 spots available; two hunters per spot). Hunt regulations, dates and conditions will be available from the refuge upon request beginning in late-September by calling the refuge office at 315-568-5987.
