He wrote: "I went out a half hour before light opening morning in order to let the woods settle down. "Ten minutes after light I was watching a deer walk in front of my son, Dean, in the field opposite me. I heard him shoot and the deer dropped. It was a button buck. "I caught movement out of the corner of my eye so I turned to see him sneak out 10 yards behind me. I shot and he dropped. The closer I got the bigger he got, no ground shrinkage "He's now at the taxidermist. We were back to the house by 7:30."
