MIke Greenlar/The Post-StandardA male cardinal at Derby Hill.Onondaga Audubon its holding its 54th annual birdathon Saturday.The event entails individuals or teams getting out and identifying as many species of birds as possible during a 24-hour period, from midnight Friday to midnight Saturday. The area covered includes Oswego, Onondaga, Madison, Oneida and Herkimer counties and part of Cayuga County north on Route 31.Last year, 29 teams participated and a total of 209 different bird species were identified. The participants are scheduled to gather Sunday for a picnic at Derby Hill in the town of Mexico, where totals will be compiled and prizes awarded.
