I started with 25 acres and a weekender cabin with no septic or well but had electric deep in the woods. It took me years to find this property as I had some requirements. Wanted to be in woods and see no neighbors. Had to be no more than an hour from Rochester as I had an elderly father and a job that put me on call 24/7 We paid $59k for it which at the time I felt I slightly overpaid but it fit criteria. Borders State land and hunting is good
Property did surround a nice log home with five acres. When ended up buying that six years ago for $130k which was a bargain but they had to act quick and actually had issues with abstract and deed. They were claiming a small parcel which we own and had better title to. It pays to have an exceptional attorney in your back pocket.
Last year a five acre parcel on the dirt road near the farm lane that goes into my property sold for $130K. This was pre- pandemic. This property is a single wide with crap tack onto it. I thought they were crazy to spend that for what they got.
Pandemic starts. A lot of the hunting camps get occupied around my area and it isn't hunting season. A lot of them start selling for crazy prices. $4,000 an acre isn't uncommon. Seems Amish around me are selling their properties.

Don't turn your nose up at the DEC trees just yet. You'll be amazed how fast they grow and once establish and still a reasonable size you can move them. And trees I've gotten have often been larger than stated,
But if you can wait, Lowes and Home Depot mark trees down 75% at end of season. Fall is a great time to plant and they hit the grown running in the Spring. I've gotten many larger trees this way. But you have to keep careful watch and even travel between stores for best selections.

I've love stocking my ponds. Big boy aquarium. Catch and release bass and catfish. All day fun. Sunnies to feed them and grass crap to control weeds. Permit is free if you go that way but you do need to buy fish from approved hatchery. However DEC fish biologist is decent guy and actually helpful. Yes, I said helpful

They exist but not in my collection. I have National Postal Meters because relatives worked there and I'm familiar with the sites where they were produced in Rochester.
Main factory is across from East High. It was a car shop when Postal Meter took it over. Now it's been rehabbed several times and its subdivided into many small parcels.
Trimble Nurseryland Furniture that was on Lexington Ave in Rochester made the stocks for them. That building also still exists but it's in a neighborhood......
Well, let's just say you don't want the sun to set while you are there.
M1 carbines are funny. It's very hard to say one is "Correct" They are largely built by original producers getting parts from many subcontractors.

I retire next month. The nature of my job has always pitted work obligations against hunting season. I could only justify a week of hunting and then I would have to choose what season. I've never been able to hunt muzzle loader as that's always the plant shutdown period.
So this year I'm looking forward to being able to hunt all seasons. I've always had my limits on what I will and what shoot but I expect I will be able to be even more selective
I also have ability to lay in some food plots. For once in my life I will have time to work on more projects for my own benefit that are repairs or maintenance.

Cartwrights Maple Tree Inn is only a couple miles from my cabin in Angelica. For those of you familiar with this institution they only open twice a year when the sap is running. I a normal weekend this time of year there's hundreds waiting to come in. This year it's takeout only. When I drove passed the other day there was less than 20 cars in parking lot.
Everybody sugars down and around there. Generally small batch operation but I do know of one maple syrup factory there but I forget the name. It was Germanic and had a very popular restaurant nearby. Maple Syrup weekend got cancelled due to Covid. Too bad as it is very enjoyable ride in fall. And I bet a lot of these little operation sold a lot of syrup then

Spring air guns are really rough on scopes. Crosman owns Benjamin air guns and for the money they aren't too bad. I have a hunter version in 22 cal. It come close to a 22 LR round and is quite accurate to 30 yards.
When I was researching the one to get for hunting I was surprised to find out the Survivalist's Forums see air guns as a gun of choice for small game
Funny thing in a lot of European countries where it hard to own a gun, air gun prevail. Air rifles were a sniper weapon in the Revolutionary war. If they caught you with one, you were shot on sight.
Lewis and Clark also had air gun with them. Were Democrats in office then too????

My sister in law got shot because she works for County. She has zero interface with public. She's an office worker. I'm not too happy with her but It just one more thing she did to make me feel that way. Seems to me politics help that though.
Still can't figure out why her job in her capacity was a qualifier by everything I see documented
My wife is getting shot as she's in remission for cancer. They are asking for all sorts of proof for that. Which isn't that hard to come by. Just her daily medications could prove that but we have much better documentation.

Years ago I had a 1972 Saab 99. I discover you could pull out the headrest and fold the seats flat. It may a fairly good bed except the stick shift could get you in a uncomfortable spot. Made that mistake once.

If it's bolt action and from WWII, I own one along with several Garands and M1 carbines. I included Swiss and Finnish firearms from that time too in my collection. Each had unique role in WWII. I've been known to hunt with a K31. Deadly accurate. Arisaka I seldom shoot. Ammo is a pain and I don't care to reload that one.
I own exactly one Carcano 91/38 It is the only gun I don't shoot because I believe it has an equal chance of firing in reverse. Sorry if I offend any Carcano collectors but it surely amazes me that Italy who's created some of the finest firearms in the world produced this and gave it to their army. It might work against spears.
The was the gun that Lee Harvey Oswald was has supposed to use on Kennedy. Oswald was a trained Marine. He had the option of choosing a 1903 Springfield. He choose this turd???? Even the rifle cartridges are funky. They look like pop bottles

Dad at start of WWII was an engineering student. But he enlisted as he figure he would have more choices than being drafted. Army initially put him into Special Training Program for Army Air Force. Patch is an oil lantern and sword. (Air was part of Army back then) They told him they could better use his talents as engineer that way and he was stationed at MIT. However dad told me all he did was blueprints for Air bases. If a latrine was to be built, it had a blueprint.
D-Day came and it didn't go as well as hope. They needed replacements quick. Special program was cancelled and he was assigned to 78th Infantry (Lighting), 308th field artillery. But he ranked fairly high among new replacements. His job was sighting in guns which was rather BS as that didn't change much or often. However in my collection I have a slide ruler he used for it. He mostly drove communications truck with trailer back and forth to ammo dump. All my life that man was amazing backing a trailer of any size. I guess if it can blow up you get good
His first engagement was a little thing called Battle of the Bulge. He said they basically fired in a circle. He also told me the Germans only strife him once. The Americans were much better at it. They try to get him three times. One day he got called to headquarters for a meeting. That was the day his truck took a direct hit from German artillery. His replacement, his truck and all of his belongings weren't any bigger than a softball in pieces. What he had on his back for that meeting was what he had for rest of the Bulge.
Dad wouldn't allow me firearms in his house. He had enough of that because of war. However grandpa didn't have such rules and was avid hunter. Very little information about the war came from dad. I found out way more about what he did from his brother who was Navy WWII and his grandson that interviewed him when he was in his 80's. He would only talk to me about engineering aspects of his duty.
I do have dad's uniform, accommodations and such. All which I found after his death cleaning out estate. He once old me he was proud of many things in his life. His military service wasn't one of them. I'm well aware he saw some really bad stuff. I have his uniform and medals all in a shadow box. As far as I and the army was concerned, he served very well.

I can tell you that when my father in law passed the State police were there inside of a week to collect the pistols.
Two of us had permits and were in the process of transferring but that didn't matter to them. They took them anyways until they were on a permit.
I do understand but I have to admit, it was downright scary how fast they came. Of all the things that it takes them forever to do in the State, this gets priority? And it wasn't like we didn't have a few other things to contend with because of his death.

That's still a stunning gun and quality adds to enjoyment when shooting. I too don't believe safe queens but do collect historical pieces. But they all get taken out for a run and they all function as intended.
That should give you and your sons joy. Let them launch clay pigeons for you. They will love it.

I'm betting one or two of you have a firearms collection of sorts. In my book more than one is a collection.
(Well, that what I tell the wife but she thinks I'm talking about safes)
For many years I was a FFL03 C&R during the glory years for being so and I collected a lot of WWII guns. Dad was a WWII vet although he NEVER talked about until he was near death. His first engagement was a little thing they called Battle of the Bulge. He saw a lot of bad crap. He was in artillery. The one thing he said with me that really stuck was if we could hit their guns then they could hit our guns and the Germans had way better guns.
I've always kept very accurate records. First because I was required to do so and later for personal reasons. I've been using a program NW Collector to do so. I don't know how many of you are familiar with it but it's a very well thought out program for those with collections. Stamps, guns, coins, whatever. Fairly cheap too, I think like $25.
I'm the only one in my family and relatives that collects guns. I've always seen these Low-Lifes types that think it's OK to buy $2,000 guns off of widows for $100. They think their knowledge earns them the right to screw people. Oh your husband brought that back from the war. Well that an old gun and not worth much with all those matching serial numbers and cartouches This boils my blood and I do really hope there's a hell.
I've made a copy of my database on USB flash drive and have given it to my Son in Law along with safe combinations. I've also stimulated his interest with a couple firearms. An Enemy at the Gate correct Mosin Nagant and a Band of Brothers, Garand. The movie aspect helps with bug although his wife (aka my daughter) my not fully appreciate the infection I intend to introduce.
In this database are detailed descriptions of each firearm. Condition, maintenance, receipts pdf, work done, gauge results, borescope findings any parts I've changed or added, pictures and value. The value aspect is the toughest as it always changing and generally in the upward direction. I watch gun auction sites for what things actually sell for. Lately it's crazy and I'm not sure those are legit values. My other issue is I'm the only one with a pistol permit. I keep telling him he needs to get one as I will be damn if the State get all of those.

Have you been on Gunbroker lately? I hope those COVID/Democrat prices aren't the new standard. If so then my established collection just took a huge rise in price. Again though, it's not about the money but the memory. I'm betting Bolt Action also has that in his mind with his new addition.

That is a beauty and excuse the drool emulating from your screen. Beretta is in a case of it's own and is head over heels better than the others you mentioned.
My deceased brother has a match set of O/U stored in a safe in Texas somewhere. I've asked my sister in law who has zero interest in them if I could buy them from her. She said yes but I don't know how to come up with a price for something like that. The money aspect isn't important to me. I just want to have something of his that I would enjoy.

I own a bore scope and know how to use it. Every firearm I own is annually is cleaned, lube and inspected plus has bore scope done before and after.
A 100% of collection is in gun socks. No humidity issues by space is very controlled. Never have I had a crown problem and I do know what they should look like. I collect military and gauged and deeply look at anything I purchase. Many are cast away due to crown wear or get re-barreled if worth the effort. I can do my own work on certain guns I have tools for.
Never have I had a crown issue from safe. Bolts on things like Garands and Mosin Nagants obligate you to stagger in safe and alternating muzzle up and down is a good way. But I don't make a habit of dropping them or load the safe so they fall forward.
I still stand by far more crowns are ruined by improper cleaning. Cleaning from muzzle end when you could from action. Not using bore guide when you have to use rod from muzzle end. Or using a rod that's segmented and/or too hard. Those actions will ruin a crown quickly. During war many did get destroyed this way.

30 acres next mountain top from Swain ski center. Borders 1300 acres State forest plus buddy owns 25 acres next to me. Has three pond which I've stocked with fish, big boy aquarium . Two creeks, one stream and springs all over the place. Mostly hardwoods but I do have a large string of pines planted during CCC days.
It took me forever to find place because my maximum distance from Rochester could be over an hour commute as I'm I call 24/7. Started with weekender cabin but my property surrounded a very nice log home. Financially NY has to be one of the stupidest places to retire but all our friends and family are here. We ended up buying log home and that's where I will spend my final days. Smart move as I could (but won't) sell it for double what I paid
Log home has come in handy as my wife has been living there since March. She can do her job no issue remotely. I did get DSL run to cabin. A whooping 6mbps but it works. I've been essential since beginning of pandemic. We make a unique optic that used in analyzers to detect and fight virus. I'm the facilities engineer and manager. I live in city house five days a week and see her and the dogs on weekends.
People ask me if my wife is afraid being alone that deep in woods. Let's see, she got the dogs, she's a redhead and she's armed to the teeth. Anyone messes with that holy trinity is going to regret it.
I've yet to start managing the land very little of it is open field. I did clear an area to put up a pole barn and that almost killed me. I had to drop 30 trees that were more than 30 feet tall. Donated a little piece of my thumb to project. I do plant DEC trees and bushes to add varieties and flowers for birds.
Deer, turkey, fox everywhere. And those dam ruffle grouse screw me up every time. They almost let you step on them before they pop up. We have Battle Royale hummingbirds at feeders half the year.
When I'm at this property, nothing bothers me. I retire in a month and a half. The woods has always been my escape and church. Grew up a suburb kid that backpacked every chance I got.

I do see people as wide as tall with shopping carts filled with bad choices and I don't attribute those to genetics. Our society puts McDonald's and Wendy's as food choices. Grocery stores likely has more bad choices than good and it name of convenience. My built in defense mechanism makes me puke if I eat that stuff. Jeno's pizza rolls, really??
Why do I hunt. Because I eat what I hunt and I know exactly where it came from with no GMO, steroids or additives. I like growing a garden too but the deer like it also. I also like to cook. Seasoning is an art.
I've been on a Pro football field before standing near bench. No doubt most of those guys would be off the charts BMI. Hell, the sun disappears when they walk by. Unfortunately most of them don't live very long either once they stop playing.

I'm less worried about the continued paycheck and more worried about US just printing billions and giving it away. Isn't this kind of what Greece almost sank the Euro with by inflating their salaries? I worked 40 years to save what I have. And honestly, I think it's incredibly stupid to give checks to people that don't need it. I totally get bailing out Mom and Pops and restaurants and such.

I mostly reload for calibers that are difficult to come by but do some common ones for accuracy. 7.5 x 55 Swiss being my favorite as once you form fire it to a particular K31 you can achieve through the same hole accuracy. I do the same for 30.06 for my 1903 Springfield's. I save brass and dedicate to that gun. My equipment is a mix. I dedicate a press stage press just to de-cap and have an old Lyman ST 6 stage turret press for other functions. Longing for a better scale as balance beam takes forever

Norma Smokeless Powder, anyone use it?

Not familiar with this powder at all.
Reloading data seems sparse. I can get 200, 202 and URP in 1lb.
I load 303. 30-06, 7.5 x 55
Now I would like to load 30 carbine (When I can find the freaking dies)
And .223 which I do have dies for but the right powder seems to be 201
Is this good stuff just to have on hand? All things considered.
