  1. I was testing a new to me but a 1970 or so 20ga 870 Wingmaster for functionality, fired 5 Remington slugs at 25 yards and had a 4 leaf clover with one flyer! 28 inch barrel with a modified choke and just the front bead for a sight. I should have taken a picture but was really suprised at that group, offhand no less. I suppose center to center it is more like an inch group but it was still a holy cow moment. Is this normal for a smooth barrel slug? Bill
  2. With a dog, not that I have been that successful, they jump up 3 or 4 feet rith in your face and then turn and fly so an open choke on that first shot isn't a bad idea. People use pointers to point and labs or spaniel types to just flush. You can walk slower with a pointer.
  3. Yes, but maybe it has been 4 years. I have driven by he place a few times since as my wife likes to take the back roads up to Windham. Bill
  4. It's been a couple of years but I had a good experience at a game reserve in Durham, on the northern slope of the catskills about an hour south of Albany. I was working a young dog on pheasants but they seem to offer most anything from a pheasant tower shoot to turkey to deer and were quite low key as a family farm type of operation. Might be an easy way to break into the sport and not waste alot of time trying to find land to hunt. Bill
  5. When do they drop? My xmas game camera just picked up a suburban deer still holding his rack on 1/8/13. Bill
  6. Thanks Elmo, do you have the numbers for a 300 Weatherby? Thanks, Bill
  7. I was just looking at the Weatherby's on GunBroker and there are a couple of lefty's out there. Most Likely 300WM's but worth a look. Bill
  8. I am always checking the autions for a good (or better) deal mostly for a range rifle. I guess I will not exclude a 7mm mag solely on recoil but it;s probably at the high end. Thanks, Bill
  9. My wife's family has property between Hunter Mtn. and Grand George, (23a,b,c,d; I can never remember) Always see many deer when we visit. Have seen coyotes and bear scat but I have not seen bears but other relatives have. I hear one of the last working farms is done and 20 years from now when the farmland has all returned to woodland there will be fewer deer. Bill
  10. Are triplet fawns possible? Hard to get a good picture as they are old enough to spread out a bit but we are certain they are triplets. I would not think a doe would "adopt" an orphan, or would she let it tag along if the orphans mom was killed? Bill
