  1. I didn't do any research on my optima as I got lucky and won it in a gun raffle...still love it though! Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  2. I have the optima v2 with the konus scope and thumbhole stock. I LOVE IT! the scope is good enough until you opt to upgrade, which I haven't done yet. The lighted crosshairs are kind of cool, but it's just a gimmick and not necessary. It's not a leupold or nikon, but it's far from junk. I shoot 100gr of pyrodex pellets with remington primers and either 300 or 338 grain powerbelt platinum aerotip bullets. Hate the aerotip for expansion reasons, but at 75 yds, holes overlap. bore butter is must inside the barrel, DO NOT wipe the external portion of the barrel with it though, it dulls the finish. I love the optima, thought many times of leaving my .270 at home this year and opting for the optima, just haven't done it because of the "what if" factor. If you have the $150, buy the optima....you'll only cry once (at the counter, paying for it). Oh, TC sells a wire brush contraption for cleaning the breech plug threads, it's red. buy it, too! Either way you go, do everything REELTIME said. I had some trial and error experiences with a flintlock, which I also love. I had the flinter first and that experience taught me a lot...like how to avoid double loading!
  3. Congrats to TF and the others that are enjoying the fruits of persistence and shear determination, it has not been an easy season! My wife had surgery for her severe tendinitis in her wrist this morning and I'll be chasing our 10 mo old around for the next day or so. I'm out of the woods until Saturday at the earliest. Hoping arrival of my MIL on Thursday night let's me get out of the house for bit over the weekend. ML season looks like a go, but I don't want to jinx myself. There is a 12-point stud roaming the neighborhood, and way too many does; they destroyed 5 rhododendron and our native blueberry shrubs this week. I've started getting grief from our neighbors for not harvesting more so I'm hoping I can cross paths with them out back. took one doe in archery season but that's not nearly enough.
  4. Stewart is very tough to hunt but there are a ton of deer there, nocturnal movement now though. I've heard good things about Sterling and Mongaup, check permit requirements though. Region 4 has been producing this year, take your pick of WMU's. Also, check NYC DEP Watershed Lands in Putnam and Ulster County. Fahnstock is a challenge and requires permits. Black Creek state Forest near Esopus just opened last year (3J). Haven't seen anything up there yet. A bit further out, the finger lakes and Ithaca areas are pretty good. Catskills can be good, going deep is generally necessary. I've also been hearing really good reports out of the Taconics (east of Hudson/west of CT and MA Line) this year, but haven't spent any time there myself. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  5. I was always taught to find the thickest patch of cover and set either in the middle or just outside of it. Thinning is counter-intuitive. I plan to thin out a 10 acres stand of 20 yo trees just so it thickens up. Trim shooting lanes in the travel corridor, don't thin them. Do some research before you break out the chainsaws. A mistake now could set you back 10 years of growth! Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  6. Way to go Rock! Very unique rack with ridged and stained/colored interiors. My season probably just ended. Wife is not feeling well and our 9 month old is doing just fine. Since first light of opening day of regular season, I've seen 8 deer...all either going 100 mph or too far through thick stuff...while on stand. I'm tired, frustrated, wind burned, and tired of tree surfing. They've been zigging, when I was zagging. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  7. I'm finally settled in 3M 48 degrees, overcast, 15-25mph winds. I don't have high expectations. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  8. Greetings from the basement where I'm catching up on the "honey do list" that I've neglected since October. Monsoon has set in over Ulster, Orange and Pike (PA) counties. Back at it once I no longer need SCUBA Gear. Raining hard here but not blowing 15 mph as predicted. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  9. Which part of SW PA? I'm from Canonsburg, but hunt out around claysville. Didn't make it this year, unfortunately ( 9 month olds have a tendancy to change your life). Really missed it, sitting in Pike County today and not seeing anything didn't help matters much.
  10. i got scoped yesterday by a kid at 40 yards away even with an orange hat on. I raised holy heck and probably screwed up the last 45 minutes of my hunt.
  11. Hunted out near Port Jervis yesterday, but still in 3M. Nothing. Only two shots were within a mile of me. Unexpected snow today, but I can't get out. Deer changed their pattern during archery season due to lack of mast and water and I wasn't able to get caught up, the super moon didn't help either causing lots of nocturnal movement. No one has seen much in terms of bucks, only reports of the same 4 - 6 points over and over which I didn't get taken yesterday. The big boys never showed up...had 4 bucks on cam from last February that should be beauties this year, but no one has seen them. Hoping things change for me during the regular season.
  12. Up until 11 PM last night there was NO snow in the forecast at all, woke up at 6:00 with our little one and poof, 4-5 inches of snow. Had I known this my butt would have been in the woods. Forecasting is an imperfect science, but they really got this one wrong in 3M/3J. Argh, won't be able to get out today since I committed to tasks with my wife and some play time with Peanut.
  13. Deer Park, goddefroy Huguenot Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  14. Sitting about 40 yards from the Neversink River, wishing trout season was still open because the deer didn't get memo that they should all be parading past my stand today. Bumped 1 on the in, nothing since. Only 1 shot somewhat close. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  15. I sat 6-8:30 am. kicked up the resident doe and button buck on the way in, nothing else. Have a congested 9 month old that needs some snuggle time with Dad, apparently, so that's a wrap on my 2016 archery season. I put some meat in the freezer, but overall, much less productive than last season...I only saw 1 buck the whole season while hunting. Scouting for the late season and 2017 season starts tomorrow...well, maybe Sunday since it will be 60 degrees here on opening day for the second year in a row and I don't expect to be doing much walking around. I'm not liking this trend at all!
  16. 6:30 - 9:00 AM sit in 3M section of Ulster County...flocks and flocks and flocks and flocks of crows flew overhead from 7-8 AM. A single squirrel and that's it. Thought it might be decent this morning since we had some cloud cover move in around midnight, noticed it as I was rocking my teething daughter back to sleep. Not having mast this year has them moving differently this year and apparently I'm two steps behind.
  17. Right, because such regs exist for both bow and muzzleloader season, one could surmise a similar reg would be in place for regular season. However, it doesn't appear as any such reg exists in NY but it does exist in PA and that is where I probably got my wires crossed. I humbly stand before all of you stating that my response to Biz's question is probably wrong, it, in fact, may not be illegal to carry more than 1 legal weapon in the woods during regular season.
  18. Then there is this 3rd bullet relative to smokepoles: All hunters participating in the muzzleloading season must follow these requirements in addition to the other regulations in this guide. Each hunter must have purchased a current year Muzzleloading privilege with his/her hunting license. The legal firearm for this season is a muzzleloading rifle or pistol (including smoothbore muzzleloaders) loaded through the muzzle, shooting a single projectile and having a bore of .44 inches or larger. Double-barreled muzzleloaders and percussion cap revolvers are not legal during the special muzzleloading season. If you hunt with a single-shot muzzleloading pistol, you must have a New York State Pistol License. Hunters shall not have in their possession, or be accompanied by a person who has in his or her possession, a bow or firearm other than the legal muzzleloading firearm.
  19. Or I was thinking of the second bullet point is only in effect during archery seasons, but not during regular season. It is unlawful to: Take big game while the deer or bear is in water. Possess a firearm of any description when bowhunting or when accompanying a person bowhunting during special archery seasons.
  20. I may be confusing PA and NY regs. In PA you are only allowed to carry one weapon (concealed carry excluded, I think). NY may not have a reg on this, but I would very surprised if they didn't.
  21. Just saw my first buck of the season, little 4pt doing about 90 mph....there maybe hope yet. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  22. My 9 month old held up her end of bargain and slept all night. Got out to small farm at 6 in stand by 6:15. All for nothing, didn't see anything, bright moon last night may have hindered things. I have a total of 12 private acres to hunt. They are the wrong 12 acres. Haven't figured out the other 700 acres of public land yet either. Only lived here for 2 years, so still learning. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  23. Had every intention of getting out before the winds got out of hand. However, our awesome 9 month old daughter went back on our agreement that she would sleep through the night until Monday. Up at 11:30 PM, mom feed her, and then it was "play time" with daddy until 2 AM. Up at five to check conditions, didn't think the combination of little sleep, windy conditions, and 20 ft up, was a good one. Went back to bed. Mom really appreciated her good night sleep though, she's earned it! 25 mph + here now through late afternoon, off to move a stand for rifle season and then I'll poke around a new property for rifle and 2nd season archery.
  24. sat from 6-8 AM, Heard one blow 200 yards in front of me, not sure at what though, wind was in my face all morning. Beautiful morning to be in the woods though!
