As for the legality of the salt block, I have it out there for the goats on the property -

I showed that baby fawn video around, and the general thought was it was maybe 1-2 days old tops.. its amazing what happens in the woods when were not there looking =) -
I heard about the early bear season over the weekend. This great news for me in the catskills. I have more bear around my property then deer and last year the week before bow season opened, all the food ran out locally on the property and the bears vanished to another part of the mountain. This is going to give me a huge window to take a bear and I hope that one of the regular bears will present me with the opportunity to take one.

I've had my trailcam out now for months capturing what I'd never see even sitting in a tree as quiet as can be.. The 120 bucks for a trialcam and Sd card have been the best investment for me. I have 100's of videos of wildlife surrounding my cabin in the catskills and Its nice to finally see some of them.. even if it is on camera. I've cropped some of the best videos together

My First buck, and the mount came out great! well at least I think so. Added him right to the living room wall. Thinking about putting the arrow that I got him with up in in his antlers and maybe a little plaque putting the year/location with the bow name. So Shout out to my Taxidermist Joe! From Fin and Feather right here in the hudson valley. He did an amazing job If you ever come across this post - Thanks again!

I love my SR22, I ran 200 rds of cci mini mags through it. gave it a solid cleaning and lube and it chews up 99% of everything I throw at it now without a hickup. It will ftf/fte on standard velocity 22, but anything high veolicty it works solid most of the time. probably have 5k+ rds through it now

with all the new gun laws in new york state, I would not count on anyone from any internet forum allowing you to hold, much less shoot their guns.

Passing on bucks because of Antler Restrictions
Dorsilfin replied to Dorsilfin's topic in Deer Hunting
The woods are all old growth at this point and the coyotes are running wild around me. would be nice if the state would come in and start logging places out and get some new growth going.. let the sunlight hit the forest floor and get some vegitation growing to support the animals. But ill never see that day happen and I dont forsee the herd getting larger.. if anything it will just skimp along and remain so so. Im going to keep looking for land, maybe find a 30-50 acre property somewhere in NYS that I can cultivate into a hunting ground with food plots and water and some thick stuff they will hopefully bed down in. -
While I am all for having huge racks walking around the woods.. I mainly hunt in 3A in the catskills. So no doe permits and antler restrictions. I got spoiled during bow with a large 8 pointer and put alot of meat in the freezer and I am very thankful for that. However Opening day I had to pass on a solid 4, because I could not see if it had browtines making it a 6. Yesterday morning I was out and had to pass on a 2 pointer.. because well 2 pointer.. Fact is I would have much prefered to have him hung up in the wood shed getting ready to butcher him up for meat. I dont eat antlers.. I eat meat and when hunting state land I want to take anything legal to fill the freezer. I have to say, Yes the 8 pointer was abnormal for this area and was awesome to have gotten a shot at it with the bow.. but New york will never be the midwest.. we do not have 1000's of acres of prestine ranches built around land management to improve the deer herd and we will never have huge racks as the norm around here. If someone has land or wants to make agreements with neighbors thats all good and well for you to pass on deer but I want to just fill the freezer. Anyways /deadhorse I know its been talked about ad nausim I just had to have a little rant about having to pass on deer because of it. -Dors

Funny you guys posted, I was actually over there this morning. Dead quiet no one around.. Also no deer seen for the 4 hours I sat this morning. *shrug* some deer signs around the places ive looked but no large well beaten game trails. I guess if I had the time to literally burn in the woods I might see something.

Slow start to the season. Well, it would have been a great start if we did not have antler restrictions haha. Opening day around 7:15am, I had a solid 4 walk by around 75-100 yards. I couldnt fully see if he had brow tines and as much as I wanted a buck opening day I had to let him keep walking and he dissapeared into the mountain laurel. Did not see anything the rest of the day, and heard no gunshots locally. 2-3 for the whole day up/down the valley (28 corridor for locals who are familiar) Sunday was raining.. Did a slow walk through the woods for a few hours, stopping every 10-15 steps and pausing for a min at a time. Didnt kick anything up didnt see anything. Monday morning I tried the DEP property near the ashokan reservoir. Kicked up 1 doe getting in and saw nothing for the 5 hours I sat. so all in all.. very slow for me. Glad I have the 1 buck from bow season in the freezer or id be feeling the pressure. Heading to 3m tomorrow to hopefully fill some doe tags. Hows things going for you?

Anyone miss the Doe tag 2nd release cause of the computer problem
Dorsilfin replied to Dorsilfin's topic in General Hunting
Gander in kingston is on my way to my cabin in 3A. My cousin just messaged me and said there are more doe permits available. Gonna head out after work tonight to try and score them. -
2 bow/muzzle tags. 1 antlered/antlerless 1 anterless 1 regular season tag can apply for Doe permits 2 + nov1st left overs, 4 total So there you have it. 7 tags possible without going into nusance permits.

Anyone hunt this place? off the Taconic in Pleasant valley? Ive ridden my mountain bike through there a few times and its quite fun. I've hiked around twice now. I went in once through tyrell road and just sunday down through Pond gut road. I've seen signs of deer and droppings and prints in the looser dirt/mud. I walked up the valley some from pond gut and it seems like the terrain is steep on both sides and then the stream coming into the swam at the road/parking area. Seems like it could be a spot to setup but just hiking around with the bow there were other people hiking and nearby obviously public use and all. Might keep the deer away with that many people moving in/out of the area. Anyone spend some quality time scouting the place out? Any tips/pointers/areas you've had some luck in?

Drats.. Guess I should have tried another location. maybe it was just my gander that was having problems -
I stopped at Gander mountain in kingston on the way upto the catskills friday night and they said the computer system was down because of some screw up with the Doe tag release.. I stop in Sunday on my way back out and 3M was all taken... Guess I should have come back down sat just for that tag.. I get the first come first serve thing but sucks that I would have had one friday night if the system was working.. Oh well

Well my trail cam haven't seen him in 2 weeks. pretty sure hes on food, just not near me. Might hike the area hard this weekend and try and find what he might be working on. Tho if im 3 miles in I don't know how much im going to want to take him out dealing with that drag!

well that was quite a let down. Hopefully he did not jump the gun on this. best to wait till its all said and done and make a post a day or two afterwords then to do so right after you let the arrow fly.

Got my first Buck.. A Catskill Buck, with my bow!
Dorsilfin replied to Dorsilfin's topic in Bow Hunting
thanks everyone! got him quartered yesterday and in the fridge.. Will be breaking down each quarter this week and getting them ready for consumption. Im taking the head to a taxidermist Thursday, thats in the fridge too staying cold. the experience has been great. Sure last year getting a doe was good and I got to enjoy the meat and go through the process, this time around with the bow and waiting and waiting it feels more epic. -
Well Saturday evening was quite exciting for me. Hunting 3A in the catskills which is a very very sparce region with one of the lowest harvest rates in all of Newyork. Around 5:45 I was sitting at a crossroads coming off of a rock ledge and the lower areas by the esopus river. 2 does came walking through and then I saw him.. and told myself there is no way this is happening an 8 pointer is rolling in behind the girls. I wait for the girls to pass, I stand up and wait for him to come in. He puts his head down to sniff or something and I draw back.. he walks a few more steps probably 20 yards tops and gives me a perfect broadside. Arrow was through and through right into the heart. He lept and took a few steps. Wobbled and fell over.. game over. So I successfully got my First buck, and to that affect a Catskill buck =) Im quite pleased with how things turned out. Spent the afternoon today quartering him up, and getting him into the fridge. I will finish the butchering and cleaning up the meat before freezing them away. Spoke with a taxidermist and will be having him shoulder mounted since hes my first buck and bow kill and I could not be happier with the outcome. -Dors

Thanks for the info, will def take a look. He unfortunately did not show up this past week on my trailcam and no sign of him this weekend. Going to have to put some feet on the ground next weekend to see what food source hes moved too and see if I can intercept him sometime before he goes to sleep for the winter
