  1. This photo is for my previous comment.... And as I said... These warts, and bald deer, they say is common for white tail deer..... I have been hunting deer 40 years an never ever heard any comments about this "common" stuff..... This buck picture was last year. He is still alive and a bit bigger rack this year. I thought for sure he would not have a "coat" to make it through the winter. Very interesting...
  2. We have a fishing contest here in our public park that has a good size pond. This contest is for the 12 an under age and every child gets something. First place, second place, biggest, smallest, so many ways too win. The youngsters have a ball.... But, we mentors were encouraged to help them bait the hook and show them how too cast the pole. Show them how to tie a hook, and everything in between all the way to measuring the trophy fish. Yep, I admit.... I did it an was not conforming to the laws written.... I did not have a fishing license..... But, in the eyes of the rule book I was fishing..... Um... So, I'm sorry this thread ended up talking about fishing instead of hunting.... But does it really matter if I'm just there as a mentor? I don't need too buy a licence too teach my grand kids the importance of a condom...... Omg, sorry now this thread is going to be about sex.........
  3. I really didn't see where this could be so difficult to implement other then adding or changing some verbiage to the rule book. I goto walmart and say I want to buy a license. If I am buying a big game license they ask me if I want to also want to get a doe tag. I can easily opt out of a doe tag. How hard could it be to opt out of a buck tag. Thus, just having a license to mentor. Yes, I guess this still allows me to drive deer.... But, I do not have the tag too take deer.
  4. I do buy any license, tag or permit I need. Just to go with him and watch. The laws in place require that I have them. No, I'm not planning on breaking the law. My point was more that there seems to be something missing in the current law. That as a mentor only, there could be some sort that if I am not "catching the fish" or "shooting the turkey" or trying to take a deer.... I'm only there to offer advice. Maybe I'll get bloody helping him field dress his first deer. The tags I bought will go out with the trash. Thanks again...
  5. Oops... Yes JRM your right about the prices... I was again really just talking about the concept and not really looking at the actual cost. It's the "I need a tag or license" to mentor for any of these. The point where I am helping my grandson drive deer and my tag was already filled. I mean, at this point the only thing my big game tag is to allow me too peruse big game and accompany my grandson. Basically mentoring without a tag. We can go fishing and I can show him all my hot spots and best lures....as long as I don't touch his pole, do I need a fishing license? Again... I was just thinking if I could get a mentoring permit without buying all these tags. I'm not going to shoot anything or eat it..lol I admit I don't read my text from all views before posting. Thanks for setting the record straight. I do appreciate it.
  6. Thank you too everyone for your replies. You and I can agree that we all have our points of view. I appreciated every comment from all views, so thank you. Myself, I believe there really could be just a simple license I buy that I can go out as a mentor. I'm very poor at typing the point I'm trying too explain so please bear with me for my closing comments. 1) I can become an instructor to teach the hunter safety course and teach a whole room full of junior hunters every aspect of hunting, identifying game, safety, rules, etc... We can handle firearms or bows... Etc etc etc..... I need at least 3 years experience and some paperwork... But, I do not need a current license or tag. 2) If I am big game hunting with my grandson and my "buck" tag I have already filled. It's ok for me to still go out and be a mentor for him because I have a big game license. So, why can't I just buy a mentoring license without buying a tag? 3) If my grandson buys a deer management permit... (Doe tag) do I need too buy a doe tag too..? 4) I was asking about the concept of a mentor license. I buy my grandsons big game license so now it's $44, plus $10 for the doe tag. An oh yea, he wants to get into archery. We both need a bow hunting license. Small game... Yes the law requires us both to hold a current license. Heck,,,,he wants turkey tags too. I need turkey tags too. We might go duck hunting. He does not need a $15 duck stamp but I do. I was just pointing out. I am not going to carry a firearm or bow and just out watching my grandson learn new things. I do not "hunt" anymore and don't eat the meat anymore. Anyway, thank you everyone for your feedback. Everyone has a voice here.
  7. I have a photo but for some reason I can't upload it...? Anyway, a nice buck last year and it was almost bald. Looked like mange? Or some disease. I was scared and called DEC about it and asked if I should put it out of its misery or if they wanted to come get it for some lab testing. Turns out that this is also common for whitetail deer. In all my years I have never heard of or seen the warts, or the bald deer. I think DEC said it was mites(?) that made the hair fall out. But, once the cold weather hit the buck grew a nice winter coat an you'd never know he was bald a month ago. Sorry I can't upload the pic?
  8. Thank you jrm for understanding my question and your reply... That's more in line with what I started this question with. I was feeling pretty ashamed for even asking after getting beat up for, my understanding of the law, or my financial situation, and even questions if I love my grandson..... I will never ask anything again.... Wow.... Lessened learned...
  9. Um... Yea I agree I suck at trying to figure out the right words too type. I'm not any good at making my words clear by texting. My question was only asking about the "concept" of this law..... I never asked for clarification of the rules, I never asked for financial advice, an don't need help deciding if it's worth the time with my grandson..... Thanks too the ones who replied who understood my question.... I just thought it was a topic too talk about...I just thought if I brought up a valid question too the group I might have met some new friends to chat with.... I never thought I was going too be bashed for raising the question...
  10. Jrm, yes that's what I meant to ask. "what is the reasoning behind this rule". A very good explanation. Yes, I knew it was the law an never tried to make it sound like I was looking too break the law. I was asking more, do we really need this law? Laws change all the time. I buy a hunting licence each year just so I can legally walk in the woods with my licensed grandson thanksgiving morning and only he has a gun. Yes, we are and will always do it legal. I buy a licence each year for that couple of hours. Anyway, thanks... I thought it would be a good discussion topic..
  11. Mr VJP, THANK you for understanding the question. I don't know maybe i could have worded the question differently. Yes, the definition of hunting does not mean you have too carry a gun. I never wanted this question too make anyone think I don't know what the rules are or that I wouldn't be the proper mentor and try too get away with teaching anyone how to break the law. My question was probably miss-understood. But, as you stated, if I have my hunter safety certificate or previous hunting licenses. Doesn't that clear up if I'm qualified to be afield with a youngster? I know if I'm afield I'm technically hunting. But, I guess the question could have been... Can't we be qualified in some sort of mentor program? I didn't mean to stir up so much commotion. And I guess I'm not very good at trying to explain.. So, thank you.... Sorry all for any confusion...
  12. Um... I do know what the law says... And you did not read the question.... I did not ask IF I need a license to take my grand kids hunting... I simply asked WHY? What's the purpose of me needing a license? Yes I understand it's the law.... But I'm only there to mentor my grandchildren... I'm not even carrying a fire arm... So, yea, it's the law... I never disagreed with that.... The question is WHY is it the law....???
  13. Actually, I saw this for the first time yesterday. It's gross looking. Warts is right. Read an see a ugly pic here where I ran across this yesterday. It's near the bottom of this but scroll down you will see it.... http://www.deermanagement.us/
  14. His age has nothing too do with the question. So he's 14... Does that make any difference to the question if he was 12.... I get too see him thanksgiving day once a year. He always ask every time he comes since he was 8 to go out in the woods hunting on his visit. And, yea... After 40 years I have given up hunting... So, that means I'm not good enough to take my grandson out in the woods one day a year because I didn't put money into the conservation fund.... Um... If you ask me this is a red tape rip off...
  15. My grandson has taken the nys hunter safety training course and passed... And he is old enough to buy a hunting license.... He bought a license.... I'm a old experienced hunter.... Why do I need to buy a hunting license to accompany him in the field..... Yes, I agree he is young at this sport and may need some guidance in the field..... I'm well qualified and years of experience to be able to provide the guidance... But why do I need too buy a hunting license to accompany him..... I'm not even gonna carry a gun... I'm going too teach an watch... I need a tag to do this.. Why??
  16. I have been a sportsman for 40 years... But if I want to take my grandson out and show him... I need a license too??? I'm not going too fill my tag but I have too buy one.... I've been hunting 40 years so it's not like I need to prove I'm qualified to take my grand kids out as long as they have a license.... Why do I need one..... It's a tag that won't be filled... These numbers of tags sold an tags filled make up some of the reports from DEC.... I bought a tag, because I need one to escort my grandson.... A sportsman for 40 years...... I need too buy a tag to go watch..... There should be something written that with so many years experience you are qualified to take a youngster out hunting without it costing you the price of two tags....Ok, I rambled,,, have at it... I look forward too seeing the replies...
  17. Tell me.... Has anyone tried the HEC's gimmick.... So I don't believe any of this... I don't think anything you wear has anything to do with it..... There is another sence we humans do not understand... A couple examples... How is it that five deer in a field grazing ,,, one deer picks his head up an looks at you an all the other deer look at you too.... How did those other deer know what the first deer was looking at...??? Like a flock of red winged black birds all chirping squawking an screaming all in a very loud noise... They all stop at the same time as if somebody flicked a switch.... Like a swarm of bees or a school of fish... They all can change direction at any time... An the whole school or flock just follow.... Did some bird yell out we're going this way now an everybody follow me.... But it happens in an instance.... I'm just curious... Tell me what you think.... Does it matter what I look like..??
  18. I have 7J will swap for 4F ...... Isn't this stupid the way dec gives these out.... A family of 4 an we have 16 tags... Two deer is plenty for us....lol
  19. I'm have a very hard time finding my way around this site.... I have 3 dmp's for an area I will not have time to get too... Is there a thread like last year for trading dmp's..... I don't need one but have 3 somebody else can have....
  20. We all have experienced our eyes playing tricks on us while we were hunting... We pick up our binoculars to find out its a log or,, just brush blowing around in the breeze.... Please be honest to answer my questions.... #1 - nys makes our back tags a different color every year... I don't know why... I mean really is some dec officer going out in the woods an they won't bother you as long as you have the right color back tag on... So my question is why don't they just make the color of the back tag blaze orange every year.... At least it could be blaze orange for the youngsters who are required to wear blaze orange.... Just a thought since we pay for the cost too change the color of the tag every year.... #2 - if it's true deer can't see red... Then why am I wearing camo... I mean shouldn't I put on a Santa suit an just walk right up to them since they can't see me...lol ,,, Yea a little sarcasm but... I hope everyone is sure of there target and beyond... Have a safe season...
  21. I will trade 3 DMP for 7R , for 1 DMP for 4F....let me know...thanks
