  1. Just like when they send out the Turkey reports to random hunters, they should do the same for this. I am against AR's but if possible they should mail a survey to licensed NY hunters and who ever cares will send it back. Depending on results, which I think would probably favor no AR's, they can study more and make a decision. Yes it should be hunter's choice but if they are seriously considering it, they should talk to us as the hunters first.
  2. I'm gonna call right away, I want to able to enjoy hunting this year and not have to worry about running into trespassers and ruin my hunt. I plan on being out every day I can so I'd really like to enjoy it.
  3. Oh yeah this is definitely her property cause I did a lot of research on it before we came out and asked if we could use it haha. You know what the horrible part is? She posts it every year and there's the bright yellow posted signs estimated every 6th or so tree, along the entire border of the property. What really bugs me is the fact that someone goes in and actually builds one out of wood, at least you can remove the ladder stand. I think that's a good idea though, I have to speak to the land owner and see what she would like to do about it.
  4. My father and I just received permission to hunt a property and we took a walk in there today. The woman who owns it told us that no one else has permission and there was a lot of evidence of hunters, a ladder stand, a freshly made wooden stand and a blind. Realistically if we come across these guys during the season, should we say something because we are the only ones in there legally?
  5. A friend of mine took a big 10 in Westchester over the weekend and another friend of mine took a 4 with the muzzleloader up in Essex. Deer becoming more active the last week or so I've noticed.
  6. In the same boat as you WCC. We have a big group of a regular 8 guys and we are looking for a lease in Columbia because the properties formerly owned by family and friends has been bought up by others and we now have no room for ourselves. We plan on keeping the group together so we have been trying to find leases in the area, but it's almost impossible. Good luck to you guys.
  7. Marti, we tried Gander Mountain in Middletown, Cabela's in CT, Gander Mountain in Watertown and a couple of private shops. You are right, whatever we need, we cannot find. Except 30-06, everyone seems to have that
  8. I'm sorry I don't know why that posted 3 times, but we mostly want to get more because I only see the situation getting worse so we want to stock up.
  9. I'd go anywhere in Putnam, Westchester or Dutchess.
  10. I'd go anywhere in Putnam, Westchester or Dutchess.
  11. I'd go anywhere in Putnam, Westchester or Dutchess.
  12. Thanks Uncle Nicky, I agree. I definitely will not spend money on stock market and wall street. I'd rather be able to see what I am putting my money into and not throwing it into something that can go 50/50.
  13. I would want to hunt the heck out of the property first and then if I got in a jam sell it off haha. Just a dream of mine to own desirable land in our home state.
  14. That's right jjb, I always look for the same exact bullets. Brand, grain, everything. We tested when we sighted in a couple years back, we shoot Winchester 180 grains out of our back up rifle 30-30. We got it to group, we tried this ammo that everyone told us about, Hornady LeverRevolutions. 3 inches high. Always stick to the same ammo if possible.
  15. It's a rare thing around here, it's a shame. Surprisingly off the top of my head I have at least 8 friends that hunt but everyone else, just like you said, call us hicks and get disgusted by our conversations. I'll just never understand these people.
  16. Lurking, my father used to reload a lot and all he shot for a couple years was his own loads. Maybe he'll get back into it if I can find boxes of brass somewhere in my house or upstate.
  17. Man I gotta tell you, it's a little easier upstate in Columbia because it's a lot of farmers but around here in Putnam I came up with a list and got 1 maybe and now i'm trying to hold the guy to it. Very difficult because most people look at us hunters as criminals, especially when they hear gun considering I don't bow hunt...
  18. True, but the point is that the current ammo situation is not good.
  19. We are currently trying to find a lease in Columbia County which is extremely hard, and what you're saying is making sense. Before anything I would need a roof over my head lol, that's a definite before most other things and no kidding. I'm a senior at Mahopac High right now.
  20. Out of state currently does not interest me. Right now we are in a troubled situation trying to find hunting land, if I could help someone in the future by giving them a place to hunt, I'd love to.
  21. I shoot Federal 180 grain .308's and can not find them ANYWHERE. I only have 2 boxes left and have yet to sight in, I am going in a couple of weeks. We also inherited a .35 Marlin from my great uncle and we shoot Remington 200 grain out of it. One again we cannot find them anywhere. Is anyone else having trouble finding what they need or know what exactly is going on?
  22. I honestly don't think it's going to be easy and probably have to start out small and work my way up anyway. One example that I always think about when it comes to this is my father bought 36 acres in Lewis County in 2006. Yes the drive is long, but I have to admit it is paradise up there...and good small gaming. He bought at 65,000 and now its assessed at 86,200. It jumped up in just 7 years and the taxes are under 1,000 per year, which is crazy considering most of New York is insane with taxes. What do you know or feel about starting out with residential vacant lots and building up?
  23. Thanks vincy, I figured I should start while i'm younger because this is something i'm very interested in. I would lean towards leasing out the properties (if I was lucky enough to achieve what I want) because I have seen what loggers do to properties and it is really just disgusting. Thanks for the input though everyone!
  24. I see many people that succeed with real estate and as I was talking to a man that we do work for (my father is a contractor), he invests in commercial and retail buildings and he makes millions to say the least. He recommended to me that if the land is at a good price and would eventually be able to be built on, it's a good long term investment. That does make sense to me, but the way taxes are getting in New York, I don't know if owning land all over would be affordable. Hopefully something happens that gives me a notion that this is possible and I can be some sort of lease agent.
  25. I am still young but am already looking forward to my investing future, several people I know think this is a good idea and I want to see what other peers thought. In the future when I am financially ready for my first, I would like to buy good sized lots of land all over New York. Real estate is a fantastic investment, especially land mostly because the value will most likely go up. I would really love to own property all over and be able to decide each year, ok where will we hunt this year? I think that it would be even better to scout the properties and lease off the ones I do not want to hunt to at least cover the taxes...which would be the worst and possibly destroying part of this plan. I know I still have a ways to go, but does this seem like a solid plan of some sort?
