  1. So which birds are these around Mid-May, then Mid-August that come even close to upstate? Canadian geese? https://www.allaboutbirds.org/mesmerizing-migration-watch-118-bird-species-migrate-across-a-map-of-the-western-hemisphere/ I got this by following: https://twitter.com/cornellbirds
  2. Thank you all for writing back. You convinced me to try this. I will cook it and eat it. I think I'll try this Julia Child recipe: http://wdtprs.com/blog/2010/05/sunday-lapin-au-saupiquet-rabbit/ Thank you again all for helping me. -Dave
  3. Can someone help me here? I got a great little cottontail this morning but am concerned about the liver. It has a bunch of little squiggles on it (see attached). I'm not keeping the liver of course, but is the rest of the rabbit ok to eat? Thank you very much. -Dave
  4. I found some books from the 1800's on trapping. The first two someone sent to me which tipped me off to the below site are, "The Art of Trapping" and "Camp Life: The Tricks of Trapping." IF those two aren't in the link below let me know and I'll post them. https://archive.org/search.php?query=trapping+hunting&sort=-date ....Just first "sort by" after you make sure you click "Date Published" as the sort field: so you get the oldest books, then click on a book you want....then choose PDF. Then you can either read it, print it, or save it.
  5. I thought I would go out this weekend in the Southern Tier, look for some rabbits. Maybe FL Forest. Anyone want to talk about this?
  6. I have an extra tag for 8J if anyone wants it. No swap needed. Now if you want to send me some jerky I'll take it, but not necessary.
  7. I have an extra tag for 8J. I could swap it for another 8S if anyone wants to do that OR....I could just give it away if I don't end up using it but that wouldn't be until almost the end of the season.
  8. Someone needs to publish a book on small game recipes, if one doesn't already exist. Anyone figured out how to fatten up squirrel meat enough to make jerky? Not to start a whole food conversation, I'm just saying....I need to figure out how to get my family Back into caring about game meat which I believe is a gift.
  9. Now that I found this forum I can finally ask questions I've always had: Background: I only deer hunt during gun season, not bow but eventually I will get into bow. Question: IS it rude to have a small fire in the woods like free-camping as I'm prone to do, during bow season? Meaning, am I scaring-away deer / pissing-off people if I do this when I know they're at least "possibly" hunting on the same mountain/hill? Thanks.
  10. Might be the answer......An escaped deer?? http://senecawhitedeer.org/
  11. That makes sense. I'll have to read it through.
  12. Yea that's a good point. I just wanted to find the doe number from last year if possible for my own understanding. I don't even know if you can just subtract "total buck take" from "total take" or maybe they would have provided that number...but that's what I did so...someone can tell me how to do it if incorrect.
  13. Here's a bigger version. If someone gives me a particular statistic they want to find I can try to do it. Again, I might not have done this correctly but it's a first shot just playing around.
  14. Where are the most amount of doe? ....I don't know if I did this right, but I wanted to see where the biggest areas were for deer in Region 8. If I did it correctly, I can make another one for another area if anyone wants. Also, The "doe take" I just made by subtracting the two numbers (they provided) of total deer take and total buck take for 2013 so I'm not sure if the theory is correct. **All numbers are based on "per square mile." So "take per square mile in the given area."
  15. Albino Deer....or at least I think it is. Picture taken yesterday. I'm not saying where it is for its safety (not sure why I think it should not be taken, but I'm just going to stick with it for now here). But it's in Region 8. Just wanted to share.

  17. I got my doe tags yesterday and thankfully for the areas I wanted. I used the new Acela online system because I stumbled on it a while ago and decided to use it even though it was convoluted (https://aca.dec.accela.com/dec/). Also there is no "Sportsman" anymore. Then, after I submitted the application, I called 866-933-2257 just to make sure it went through. Then, I called the DMP "Hotline" to see if I got the areas I wanted for the tags: 866-472-4332. Anyway, maybe easier methods but this worked and got me the areas I wanted so I thought I would share. Also, if you want a map with gridlines of the areas in case you're going somewhere new, one way is to look here: http://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/wildlife_pdf/deerforecastr8.pdf (see the #8..just put in the number of the area you want to see...I'm sure it's in an index somewhere but I don't have it right now... but this works. So that link above is for Region 8. You can then take the little image and blow it up). And also http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/8302.html
  18. I just felt like posting something I found extremely cool. Feel like sitting on the couch and watching tons and tons of helpful stuff? .... https://www.youtube.com/user/wildernessoutfitters/videos
  19. I read ALL your responses...Thanks! Instead of replying to each and creating a firestorm of notifications in your email, I'll just say here that I read them all and Thank you so much for writing. I'm going to take the advice and get something less powerful to start. Also, while I'm replying, I saw Another review article following @NRA on twitter today entitled, "Five New Hunting Bows that Won't Break the Bank:" http://www.americanhunter.org/galleries/affordablebows ...So whatever, but since I posted the first review, I thought I would make the thread more complete and post this one I just saw with more affordable bows too. I'm going to go to a shop and see what they say armed with your advice. Thanks.
  20. Got it. Thanks. I will try that.
  21. I just felt like posting something today. Field and Stream put out their reviews for 2014 bows in this current issue. So go to Barnes and Noble and read it for free. Page 69 I think. I still haven't gotten a bow yet, but have been hunting with shotgun/rifle since I was a kid. Anyway, I think I will be looking at that Bowtech company who won 2012, 2013, and 2014 according to F&S. I just remembered that I took pictures to post on Google+ for my dad to see... so here they are.
  22. Thanks for the information. Well if anyone wants to go grouse hunting in the FL forest (or other, Southern Tier) in the fall, let me know. I have deer hunting friends but no one to go bird hunting with. I actually prefer going by myself but it wouldn't hurt to learn from someone on these matters.
  23. I hope I find grouse this year. I need to find a good place and time. I think I need to concentrate around the white (ash?) trees. I've watched many videos on Youtube and I think I want to hunt grouse. Make sure I don't shoot a tweety bird...
  24. I'm getting itchy for April 1st already. Does anyone try to catch the migrating fish from Seneca upstream before April 1 IN the lake itself (not tributary)? If so, where and what do you use? I assume this is ethical and legal: http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/31417.html Thoughts? Thanks.
