That thing saved me AT LEAST an hour on that head and such a nice deep, even burn!

My little old handheld bottle kit "bearly" touched the color of that wood no matter how long I held the flame to it.

I had a similar one for "torch down" roofing many years ago. We used it to cook burgers at lunch time, like Grampy said. And I like the "bearly" comment!

You good with engines? Look for an old Troy Built. I think they are also models horse and pony. They were once upon a time built SOLID. I do not know about current troy built. I saw them in Lowes for a while semi recently. I have one from 1979 I think it is and its a tank.  I see them now and again on craigs list.

I agree completely. I've used older Troy Built stuff, including a rototiller, from the 1970's and it's just unbelievable equipment. My neighbor had a tiller that I had a hard time keeping up with. Among the things that killed Troy Built USA was the fact that their stuff just lasted forever. If the past customer never has to replace it you need new customers all the time, and people today don't give a crap about anything beyond today's needs. That's why you see $79 Poulan chainsaws in Big Lots. Buy once, cry once for anything you plan on using seriously. Rant over.

I once met a gender confused fellow whose name was Ben Dover...

He and his buddy, Phil McCracken, used to come over to use the shooting range. I let them go out on their own.

  4. I think that Mark is right up there too. We had 230 or so people in my high school graduation class in 1977. I think fifteen of us were named Mark. When I lived in Buffalo there was a guy just a few doors away named Mark with the same surname and middle initial. We swapped mail several times.

  5. I asked my brother about his chestnut trees. He's actually developing quite an orchard of them. They are some sort of Chinese chestnut is what he told me. Delicious! He was given the original tree by one of his dental patients about 25 years ago, and once it started to produce nuts he'd save a few to germinate. Now he has more chestnuts than he knows what to do with. I get a good bag of them every year to snack on. You basically need welding gloves to pick them up and husk them, but it's absolutely worth it.

AND who the hell eats STEW in July!?!?

Uhhh, people who are hungry and have venison in the freezer! I used to work some long hard days in construction, and coming home to a fully cooked meal from the crock pot was a blessing. I'm not a big fan of fancy stuff, and even grilling is work after a long day. And I really like stew. I even buy cans of Dinty Moore when I go camping, and I enjoy it.

I can't  officially "like" your post right now, but that had me laughing for half an hour, my friend. Thank you!

  8. Where do wild scallions fit in? I guess that's what I get off my property. I thought they were leeks but somebody told me they weren't.They are spicy and tasty little buggers, though.

I could do exhaustive research on the internet and find nothing useful. I trust you folks to school me on this if you can.

  9. Leeks & onions with taters and black bread, and a slab of ham with a few eggs. A farm breakfast! I miss that stuff.

I've been told there's an actual difference between leeks and ramps. That ramps are somehow fuller and more robust than leeks. Does anyone have any info on this? Just curious.

That's the way I cook and eat most of the time. I have a crock pot, a toaster oven, a microwave, a single burner propane camp stove and a small grill for the summer. I don't use more than one appliance at a time.

I also have exactly two plates, two bowls, and two each; forks, teaspoons and soupspoons. Minimalism is a good thing.
