When I can afford to put Skinners on it I plan on doing just that. Skinner winged front and rear, Beartooth Mercantile safety delete and a Wild West Guns trigger would really make the 336 a sweet woods rifle. Might even replace the hardwood stocks with some Boyd's laminate stocks.
-
I'm going to sit at a few spots, then still hunt the ridges if sitting turns up nothing.
-
My 336 is pretty handy. It has a 20 in barrel. I'm going to swap the sights out for some Skinners sometime. It's been a project on my mind for a few years and I haven't completed it. The 243 is definitely an option. Its a 20in ultralight so it carries easily. I'm just not sure I want a scope in this area. I might put both in the truck and see what the conditions are like when I get there.

The Nosler BSB isn't going to win any awards for expansion. lol

Had an Aimpoint PRO on my patrol rifle. Never loved it. It was nice, but I have astigmatism so the dot always looks blurry, even with my contacts in.

I don't have a 2x scope and I don't have the funds for one. Next year I might set the Mini up with a fixed 2-4x scout scope. I think the Nosler Bonded Solid Base is a major improvement for .224 bullets. It was designed as a barrier blind bullet for law enforcement/military use. Those jokers punch straight lines through things and don't break apart. When I was an LEO I was issued this round after we had dismal performance from 55gr Ballistic Silvertips. I think a quartering shot would be acceptable inside 80-100 yards.

I like 4-5.5 pounds. A light trigger won't fix fundamentals. When people can't shoot the first thing they "fix" is the trigger. They probably just can't shoot.

I found a new spot to hunt this year and it's deep woods with hills, ridges and lots of trees. It's moderately thick, but not too thick and there are good sight lines throughout the area. When I scouted it I was thinking about which rifle I'd use for the area and I'm bouncing a couple ideas around. I typically use a Ruger 77 in .243 that wears a 3-9x scope. I don't think a scope will be a good fit in this area. The terrain is physically demanding to trek through and the average shot there only would be ~45 yards. Other than my Ruger 77, I have a Marlin .30/30 and Ruger Mini-14 in 5.56mm to choose from. My Marlin is a pre-Remington 336 and shoots true with a fairly heavy, but decently crisp 7lb or so trigger. It wears the standard semi buckhorn sights which I don't really like. I shoot Federal Power Shok 150gr or Fusion out of this rifle. The Mini is a 581 serial prefix so it has all the "Ranch Rifle" upgrades from the previous version. It wears the standard front blade and aperture rear. I find this rifle accurate, handy and reliable. I shoot this rifle 3x more than any other rifle and am confident with it. I have some Winchester RA556B (64gr Nosler Bonded Solid Base) for it if I decide to use the Mini. I'm leaning toward the Mini. it has a better trigger, I shoot it more often and I'm confident with the performance of RA556B at the ranges I'm going to encounter. Curious what input this forum might have.

I decided to try Hunting north this year. I got a DMP in 6G. Does anyone have or know of any private land in that area? I'd be willing to pay if the price is reasonable.

I understand. Im talking about people who claim to shoot 10+ deer a year type of thing. Just seems like a ton.

I'm a novice hunter. I'm not super experienced, but I've been in the woods participating in hiking, hunting or camping in addition to hunting. From time to time, I read Internet forum stories written by people who tell tales of killing insane amounts of deer. Some of these stories come from the south where bag limits are much higher than the north, so maybe it's possible. Move come away from those stories with a few thoughts. 1) they're Internet BS, exaggerated or completely fabricated. 2) these people bait the heck out of deer. Like I said, I'm no expert, but I'm not an idiot and I have never seen the amount of deer some of these folks have. I'm sure there are some really good and really lucky hunters that experience these things, but I tend to lean towards 1 or 2. How about you?

This place must be either a honeyhole or another one of hole.

That is a high powered air rifle that will punch a bullet clean through a man. -
Luring, baiting, it's all the same. I don't see the real point in differentiating the two. I can spray doe pee on a tree and that's ok. But if I put some mineral lick or corn on the ground that's bad. I don't see a difference. If DEC wants to decrease the deer population in specific areas, open those areas to baiting. With declining hunter numbers I see no harm. Heck, I bet that a lot of people do it anyways and keep their mouth shut. Just sayin'... Georgia legalized baiting in the southern part of the state on private land. I don't think much has changed since.

Rifle Caliber- Which would you choose?

A .308 is definitely a possibility. Sent from my Lenovo TAB 2 A10-70F using Tapatalk -

A bullet can explode and cause all kinds of shock, but have minimal destruction because it doesn't penetrate (cut) deep enough.BTW, I am the OP. Sent from my Lenovo TAB 2 A10-70F using Tapatalk -

A good number of them fall to .243 every year. A 90 grain E-Tip, 100 grain Partition, etc... I think it was one of Wayne Van Zwoll's favorite elk cartridge.Think like this- if you can kill and animal with an arrow, why in the world would you need a XXX ultra-magnum as long as the bullet reaches the vitals? A 100 grain .243 bullet has a section density close to that of a 150 grain .308. Sent from my Lenovo TAB 2 A10-70F using Tapatalk -

Yea, I listed it as a maybe. Elk is more probable than moose, but AK is out of the question right now. Something lower 48. I know the .243 will work, but is marginal for larger game. I'm hoping to put together an elk hunt out west in 2016 or 2017. My '06 is just fine, but I want something that's finished nicer. I don't particularly enjoy the Savage ergos or the detachable magazine. I prefer stainless steel and a stiffer stock. I would like a cartridge that was as versatile as the '06, but in a short action and compatible with a 20-22 inch barrel. Basically I want something that puts out 1500 ft lbs of energy at 350yds. Really looking for another do-all cartridge. Sent from my Lenovo TAB 2 A10-70F using Tapatalk -

That isn't my goal. I don't have that kind of scratch. Maybe an elk hunt, but even then probably just deer. As Americans we think that we need gigantic cannons to kill animals when we really don't. Europeans regularly kill moose with 6.5x55, so I think all the rounds listed are more than enough. I do reload, though not frequently. I'm starting to think my .338 or .260 re-barrel is a good idea. -

OR.... Would you take your funds, send the .243 Win (Ruger 77 Hawkeye) off to Manners for a fiberglass/graphite stock weighing 25oz, then send it to someone for a re-barrel to .260 Rem or .338 Federal or RCM (leave as a .243?), then to Robar for a full NP3 treatment. First world problems. Ha-ha. Thanks guys! -
If you were buying a new rifle for shooting slightly bigger game than whitetail (think elk, moose, etc...) and for longer range whitetail hunting (250-350yds, so rare shooting, but we all need reasons) out of these which would you choose? All rifles are Ruger 77 Hawkeye. .270 Win (20in bbl), .280 Rem (22in bbl), 7mm-08 Rem (20in bbl), .308 Win (22in bbl), .338 RCM (22in bbl) I currently have a .243 Win (primary deer rifle) .30-30 Win, and .30-06. I really have all my bases covered, however my .30-06 is an old Savage 111 with flimsy stock and it's heavy, like almost 10lbs with a scope. Looking for something around a .30-06 in power, but with better fit and finish. I'm really leaning toward the 338 RCM. Even though the ammo can be hard to find it can be reloaded. Even if I can't obtain the velocity Hornady does with their special powders (handloading), I'll still have about a 338-06 type rifle in a short action. The 20 inch .270 Win is also intriguing. I read a bunch about people handloading 130gr bullets at 3000+fps from a 20 inch tube. Thoughts? Sent from my Lenovo TAB 2 A10-70F using Tapatalk
