  1. :negative:  It is too warm for this time of the year. Been waiting for Late MZ season and tacking deer in the snow. Looks like it's not going to happen this year. The weather forecast  for new years day is 51 degrees by me with a very slight chance of snow flurries between now and then.                                      I missed the whole hunting season this year ( will tell that story at the end ).

We need some colder temps. to get the deer moving , the only time I see them is early morning and late evening by me. Even then most of the time they are the young ones and they are very alert this year the slightest sound or movement and there tails are up in the air and they are ready to move on.

Trail camera pictures are not showing them either only a fox and a yote. moving late at night till early morning.

I missed the early archery season and gun season because of open heart surgery , they did it the old way by cutting your chest then spreading the chest apart and going inside and fixing what has to be done and stitching it back together. Talk about being sore, it sure was for 2 months. And tired from lack of sleep.  I had a Arotic Valve replaced. Well that is pretty much healed up and they want you to do a lot of walking. And this is one reason why I have been  waiting for a MZ season with a nice light snowfall this year.

  2. An't that bad, thumb and pinkey are the most important fingers. It will throb for a while . Cut my thumb off they sewed it back, it works but no feeling. , cut the tip off of another finger they threw it away said it's not worth chancing an infection and they will have to take more of the finger off. Just do what the dr's say.

  3. Yeah but during the summer months they are nocturnal and also aren't in the peak rut

I think you have that backwards. I have trail cam. pictures that show deer out and about  morning, noon and night all Spring and Summer. Right after bow opened they went nocturnal , do not want to get overheated with this weather , unless pushed and conserving energy this time of the year.

  4. Yes, reports from Delaware are dismal. Otsego - at least here - is very different. None of the locals are complaining. Why? I'm guessing Delaware is a harder place for a deer to make a living.

You hit right, other then the working farm areas the county is being over grown with older trees , very little young groth for the deer to munch on. A lot of weekender owned properties around me that come up to spend time in the woods, in turn less clearing and less browse. The valley I live in had the upper parts of the hills had a white covering on them this morning .there are many days when we have snow on the ground in the morning and down lower the have rain. A lot of the land around here was bought up by the DEP , so it is just growing wild , no clearing of the woods. Deer cannot survive in a mature maple forest.

  5. There are definitely monsters up in the 4P area. However, if few to little people go out and the doe to buck ratio is high than the big bruisers won't have to move until late at night.

There were less people hunting my area of 4P this year then past years,It could be because of the cut back of Doe permits this year. Also if you look at the age of the people that live here full time ,they are not that young. The good point is that there are more young and female hunters out there in the woods then in the past and they are getting some nice deer. Look at a Topo map and you will see that 4P has a good part of it with heavy wooded steep slopes , more then flat open land. So the older generation just cant hunt the areas like that anymore as in the past.

Before hunting season opened up there were a good amount of does and bucks that made it threw the past winter that would roam all over my property and the neighbors property. It seems that once hunting season started they vanished. Trail cameras out there with 0 pictures on them , when there would be 10 to 100 pictures a day. And the cams are moved to different areas on the property. Not even the usual night time pictures of the bucks moving around. And I am out there almost all day moving around doing different chores on the property every day weather permitting.

One thing you have to keep in mind is the weather we are having ( warmer then it is for this time of the year) and the deer have there winter coats on . so they are just going to stay put unless the are pushed.

  6. I've had the opportunity to eat a nuisance permit deer shot in July. Completely different in a great way. Berries, green grass ,fresh corn compared to browse and such in a winter deer.

As i said what they eat makes a difference, I would like to taste one that has been shot in the summer when all of the berries , acorns  and other food are eaten by them.

  7. How an animal and or fish will taste depends on what it eats.Good example I fished most of my life all around and on Long Island , NY. the trout caught in the streams in the area where they were raised in holding tanks taste like liver ( they are fed pellets containing liver) The trout caught in streams up state as ( 9" and bigger ) taste great. Weakfish ( sea trout ) caught in May taste as good or better then lobster, They are feeding on grass shrimp , the ones that are caught around Sept. or October almost taste like bluefish, because the are feeding on bunker.

  8. By me it looks as if they are hunting as the past years ( Monday ) opening day. There were more shots this morning so far as there were all weekend. 23 degrees and the deer were out feeding on the side of the house 7:00 - 7:30 this morning.

  9. Only 1 shot heard by me yesterday , deer were not moving or were not there , I was on the tractor all day long cleaning up trails and plots and the tractor does not bother them ,they will come out and feed when they get hungry. Lack of hunters could be that they cut back on the doe permits by us and the 6 point rule.
