I've always considered Hunting the mid day sits during the heat of the rut. But never really have. After running cams pretty hard last year. in my good spots that are between bedding areas and bedding to food, i had some very good mid day movement on some "Chooters" .. I am convinced this year to sleep in and hunt from 930am-on. And even in the crappiest of weather last year, i got pics or actually seen the bigger bucks out cruising, when most think they arent moving. I believe the big bucks will, in the rainy cooler days..

I only have 2 or 3 setups that I believe would make good mid day sits. I thnk its totally worth the mid day sit, given you pick the right location to sit..

Always hunt the rain! My cameras are full of deer when it rains and after it stops. I always see deer in the rain, I hope for rain every time I go out hunting.

I'm aware of that. And DMP legally has to be signed over before actual hunting with it. Written down on your license as a transfer listing you have another tag.

Before my time but what were party permits exactly ?

Party permits would have more then one persons name on the tag. So who ever was on the tag could fill the tag.

Hey guys. So after the second weekend, I'm pretty frustrated, and wondering of its time to start thinking of a new game plan. Many of you saw the trail camera pictures I posted and i had a nice buck, and a few other deer showing up pretty regularly, at least 2 to 3 times a week. Since july. Now for the past 2 weeks there has been very little action on the cameras, the 10 point has disappeared, and every night I'm seeing deer about 100 yards away from me. Should I try to post up in that spot? Is it likely they will return to where my stand is? I'm so frusturated!!!

To many people hunt off the pictures they see in July. A lot of times the deer change their movement based on the food and time of year. For example, we have corn on our property (most times not this year) and once it's cut they stop moving through one of our stands. The food source changes and they change their movement patterns. Is the stand dead, no, but it sure slows down. It's just a matter of learning your area and how the deer move.

Right now though if you are seeing the deer 100 yards away, make the move if you can.

    slash their tires...(just kidding...)

That's not funny man, we had that happen to us during duck season in Canada years ago. The ducks kept coming our way and the guys down the river a ways didn't like it and slashed the tires on our boat trailer. Me I wanted to handle it my own way, which was to drag them out of their blind and drown them in the river, but the other guys stopped me before I could do it. We ended up calling the cops and they admitted to doing it because all the ducks kept going to us and they didn't like it.

Shoot age class not antler points for proper management...

This right here! Finally I'm not  the only one saying that. You don't get big bucks from AR's you get them from age. Anyone that will spend a few minutes and research how you get big bucks would realize that.

Yes but same tag as early either sex. You don't get 3 buck tags. Only 2 no matter how you look at it. Excluding Long Island and Westchester, you can shoot 1 buck early and 1 buck in Reg (gun season)

I get it now. Thanks for the help.

Not outside of Westchester and Long Island. Your xbow buck tag per se, it's the early season either sex so if you use it with compound you are done buck-wise until gun season.

But you get a xbow either sex and an archery either sex. That's 2 bucks before gun season.

How are you going to do that? You only have a tag for one,the gun buck tag cant be used until gun season.

Can't anybody shoot 2 bucks before gun season? You can use your archery tag and then hunt with a xbow, so there's two.

I know of many people that see an old mature doe seemingly every year that they say would dress 200 lbs. Hundreds of recorded doe later I'm hard pressed to find one break past the 150s. I think their judgement and eyesight is a wag. Nothing having to do with you. I kind of agree. I think without harvest data to back it up aging by any means is just a wag.

I don't see does that big every year, but I shot one about 10 years ago that dressed out at 172 pounds and one 3 years ago that dressed out at 153 pounds, and I saw another one that was easy over 200 pounds a few years ago. I wish I had a picture of the bigger one, she was huge!

  10. I love it when it rains! I see more deer moving in the rain then any other time, unless it's a downpour. If it is pouring and it is gonna stop at some point during the day I get out there before it stops, because I see deer moving every time it stops with the heavy rain.

I think Crossbows need to be outlawed again. Its such an advantage over regular bow hunting, I just don't think its fair for guys to be out there in prime time with a weapon that's practically a rifle that shoots arrows. Idk, just my opinion. Its much more fun and more difficult to get them 45 yards or closer so you can smack em with a real bow.

You need to learn a few things about crossbows.

  12. I tried one the last 2 years, even hung it in front of a camera, but have never seen a deer go near it. So I probably won't bother with it this year. I just hang some scent before I get in the stand which does seem to work. I 've had bucks run right up to the scent the last 2 years.

  13. We have one we call Lucky, he's actually the picture under my name. My dad missed him twice in one day and every time I see him he is out of range, except once and the road was right behind him, so no shot. We also have one called the Ghost, he only comes out at night. We have never laid eyes on him in the daylight.

if that buck isn't passing through your huntable area during hunting hours, forget him. Don't waste time focusing on  buck tht comes through our yard at midnight every night, go get another one.

the belief that deer and turkeys alter their generations of behavior only when it concerns humans is , I believe, a subconscious effort by some more urban humans to make the killing of food seem harder so that it is  to increase their standing ....it becomes a greater accomplishment therefor the hunter has greater worth. It's an interesting phenomena in worldwide hunting circles from tribes to high tech.

Oh believe me, I'm not passing on other deer to wait for him. We have pictures of like 6 other bucks, none close to this guy though. We know the 2 spots he beds in each day and we are working on a plan to be able to cover those areas. We also know our best chance to get him is when the rut hits, which for us it always happens the week leading up to halloween, at least that's when we see the most bucks moving around. Hopefully he will do something stupid that week.
