  1. Good for you

What a world we live in where two grown men cant have this discussion face to face. This is not a knock on Muzzy since he tried to approach it in the woods. It's just a shame that we rely so much on nonpersonal manners of conversation rather than a real face to face discussion. As evidence by bulletin board bantering, arguing, and debating that happens everywhere.

  2. May want to think twice before killing a cougar.

"The penalties for these violations can be a maximum fine of up to $50,000 or imprisonment for one year, or both, and civil penalties of up to $25,000 per violation, may be assessed."

It's funny that shooting a mythical creature could cost you $50,000 and jail time. But Shooting a high powered rifle, across a road, at night, near a house gets you a misdemeanor.

  3. I used them for the first time this season with decent success. I cant say that I had a big boy come looking but several deer were interested and a few smaller bucks walked right to the sex scent. You need to burn it in a bucket for it last longer. I use a piece of PVC pipe wrapped with black tape, drilled holes in it, and put it over the stick.

  4. I have only used 240 gr jhp in my .44 have taken a few deer with it. I dont think the deer cares what you use. Shot placement is the key to killing the animal. A few deer i have had marginal hits on didn't bleed very much and I lost them. I may have lost them with a long gun but IMO would have had more blood to track with.

  5. The scent thing is the biggest marketing scam ever invented, it is a great money maker, scent this, scent that...BS I say.

My Grandpa used to smell like a tobacco bag and beer...lol...and he always got the biggest buck in the camp. The deer sleep on my front lawn where they can small my truck, my garbage, my guns, my socks...you get the picture and they don't care a bit...this scent paranoia made someone really rich...I wish it was me :-)

I agree 100% - Some guys take this whole scent thing way too far.

  6. He was in a treestand with trajectory pointing down. The shot went upwards through the side of the bus and into the roof. I am betting a ricochet too. Lots of guys on the internet make a lot of judgments from behind a keyboard. I am betting most all of them would have taken the same shot. At some point we are all firing towards a road.

  7. I tell you what - this thread is a good idea but I don't know how effective it is.

    I still need 4f

Probably a better idea to start talking about this in August before license go on sale. I know I am never going to get my second chance permit. If I knew someone looking for a specific area I would apply for it and make a trade or just give it to them.

  8. IIRC, 3 hours may be a little long? Last one I did took about 2.5 hours and did weigh about 22lbs.

Do you have a large can? If not, you can borrow mine. I've only done two or three birds in it and burned the galvanizing off of it prior to the first bird.

Not sure where you are though, I'm near Buffalo.

Thanks for the offer I am in Hamburg. I bought a new can yesterday and I plan on burining it tonight. It will make for a good reason to stand outside and drink a few beers. Thanks for the input on the time too.. That's what I was looking for.

  9. I have reused a 10 gal can more than once but needed a bigger can for a bigger bird. If u have not had a bird done in a garbage can u don't know what u r missing. Its better than deep fried. I have a smoker and the trash can is the way to go. I was just curious about the time on the bigger bird

  10. So I am looking for a little help with a trash can turkey. I couldnt think of a better group of people to ask than fellow outdoors folks. I have cooked a few smaller birds 12-14 lbs in a trash can and thr results are always great. This year I am doing a 23 lb bird in a bigger can. I am looking for cooking times. I am thinking 3 hours but I wanted to get some other opinions. Has anyone done a bird this size in a trash can?

    Thanks in Advance.

  11. I personally feel that state land gets a bad reputation. Just reading the posts on here and talking with other hunters. There is a misconception about public land; that it is crowded, unsafe, small deer, etc. I have hunted state propertly for years. For the most part the parcels of land are huge, over 1000 acres in a lot of places. If you had 20 hunters out there one would think it is crowded even though each hunter would have 50 acres to himself. Compare that to 100 acre parcel that is privately owned with 10 hunters on it each getting 10 acres to hunt. I know it's a tough comparison but in the end there are plenty of bruisers out there on public land. It's the hunters who are willing to walk (not ride) back into the woods, who rely on their hunting skills, and spend a lot of time out there who are rewarded. Then they have to drag that sucker out.

  12. It's also darker in the fall than in the spring due to where the sun is in the sky. Plus a single round fired out of your 30.06 is going travel a lot further than your turkey load. I agree on a morning with a full moon and snow on the ground shooting light comes very early. We can't leave "safe shooting light" open to interpretation.

  13. I will add to that last comment. You know to me there is a lot more to hunting than just harvesting a deer. I love to be out there when the woods wakes up. There is a finite number of sunrises I will be able to see in my life. I figure why not enjoy as many as possible. It doesnt cost me a thing and it really puts me in a good state of mind.
