  1. My bump and dump plan turned out to be all bump and no dump. Nothing seen in the PM other than some chipmunks and squirrels.

My bride picked me up in the parking lot and told me she saw a herd of does in the yards on the way to pick me up. The joys of hunting suburbia.

Giving an old rub line a shot tomorrow to see if anyone has woken up yet.

    Good luck to all.

  2. Back in. Short sit this AM before I had to take truck in for body work.

On walk out spotted a nice bodied buck bouncing through a thick field on roadside. Unsure if he winded me, heard me or was chasing. Rack was wide but didn't get a great look before he disappeared into cover. Regardless I would put an arrow in him. Hung for a bit to see if I could pick him up again. Nada.

I am back sitting off a few trails into that cover. Hopefully he either stayed or will make his way back this evening.

    Good luck to all.

  3. Out in 3g. Car said 28 degrees but set to warm up throughout the day. Barely any wind movement.

Sitting in a blow down off a thick field that has some bedding areas. Hope to find one sneaking back to its bed or getting up to stretch it's legs on a walkabout.

Moon was bright and almost overhead on the walk in. Didn't even need head lamp. Could have used my release however. Got all the way in and realized it's on the floor of my garage. Luckily I have an old one in the pack.

Good luck to all going out there.

  4. Not sure on the legality, but this is what I do. Photo of the carcass before butchering. Skin, then quarters, back straps, tenderloins, neck and whatever additional scrap off the ribs, etc go into game bags. Photo of the carcass (with tag if I remember) and game bags. Pack it out leaving head if doe, taking head if buck. I use the mystery ranch pop-up frame pack that has worked well. Basically leaving the skeleton, cape and guts. Small deer can be taken in a single trip. Anything big you probably could do in one trip, but I have broken up the loads. Easier for me since I hunt solo than trying a drag out. Again, not sure if this is legal and have never been stopped by DEC.

Never had complaints about chewy meat.

  5. Another tough PM sit in 3G. No recent sign or movement at my first spot so went for a slow still hunt to an alternate. New land to me, and I found tons of old rubs but nothing new. Didn't kick up anything either.

Ran into a nice guy in the parking lot who scored a Doe tonite for his first bow kill. Great to see the excitement. There in there, but the boys don't seem to be pushing them around yet.

Congrats to all that have scored.

  6. Been slow in most of the 3’s units from what I hear so far. 60+ degrees temps starting tomorrow but it has no choice but to explode soon!

From your lips to God's ears. Not sure if it is EHD outbreak or the fact that I lost the private land I used to hunt and am only on public, but it has been a real slow season. Feels like my hunting skills have gone from mediocre to abysmal. Still great to be out there though.

    Good luck.

  7. Nothing seen all afternoon in 3g. At sunset packed up and hiked back. Kicked up a doe and two fawn bedded right off the trail about halfway home. If it were legal, I could have popped the doe at 10 yards as she just stood there. Kinda wished we had 30 minutes post sunset during a season like this. She trotted off with her twins after a few minutes of staring.

At least I know there are some deer around but the action sure seems pretty slow and very little daytime movement.

Congrats to those that connected and good luck to all. Heading in to vote at 6 am tomorrow. Unsure how long that will take and see where that puts me for a late morning or pm hunt.

  8. Went out this am on public in 3g. Felt very deery until I saw another hunter come in 30 mins after sunrise and setup 100 yards away in bedding. Ugh, public land at it's best. Waited a bit to see if he spooked something out of the cover but nada.

Shifted a few hundred yards away and found some good buck sign. Old rubs, but ground torn up and fresh scat. Looks like there was a party there last night. Had to boogy for a birthday lunch for my mother. I think I found a spot to sit for the upcoming week.

Monsters are hitting the board. Congrats to all that connected and good luck to all those out there.

  9. Hit a different public spot in 3g at end of day today. Based on the number of shells on the ground, looks like bird hunters had worked it over pretty well. Met a nice pheasant hunter on his way out while I was on my way in.

Settled in around 4 pm for a magic hour sit. Around 5 I make out an orange blob on an oak ridge line about 100 yards away from me. He makes his way down the ridge closer but not towards me. I whistle he sees me and waves. Comes over and let's me know he is squirrel hunting around me. He spends the next hour working the oak ridge for squirrels.

And that was the end of the action tonight. This spot is probably crossed off my list or I am going to have to go way further into it.

Weather looks wet for the next few days. I am probably resting up for Halloween hunt and next week. Good luck to all.

  10. So yes, there were almost no acorns this year. This 400 acre wood lot is surrounded by subdivision so my guess would be back yards

I think we both hunt seny. I am seeing same. Not much acorn, small acorns if any (not sure if the lack of rain impacts) and little movement and sign in the woods. Plenty of movement in backyards and bordering subdivisions.

Good luck to you. I am hoping temp drop over night changes pattern a bit tomorrow.

  11. Cooked up some of the tips the boys got from their shifts at the marina. Fresh yellowtail grilled over fresh green beans and sushi rice. Plating left something to be desired but the dinner killed.

Not sure where I am going to get food when they go back to school. 94aaaaccd2682258df60ede38f31b52e.jpg

  12. My bride took my sons and a friend out on the Viking yesterday while I worked. They killed it. No photos of fish but a full bucket of sea bass and porgies. Vacuum sealed and in the freezer. c63f544851bbbbd0ce405be4ed0b8337.jpg

  13. You will never go wrong with Hank Shaw!  I use his Corned Venison recipe, always terrific!
Totally. Have buck buck moose and haven't had a bad dinner yet from it. I did the corned venison. Tasted great but didn't let it cure long enough so the middle was a little gray. I am learning.
