  1. Thanks.  I guess that last point is where the answer is?  I mean, the bow/muzz is "either sex" for bow or muzz.  So I guess it's also "either sex" for crossbow?  They don't come right out and say it...  DMP obviously antlerless only, so I guess that's an answer....  But the only DMP I currently have is 4J, and apparently you can't use a crossbow in 4J.

Still a little confusing to me.

  2. Sorry, folks, I can't figure it out from the stupid DEC website.  First year with a crossbow for me.  Question: During the crossbow period of the bow season (Nov 3-16, I believe), is it legal to take a doe with the crossbow?  What tag do you use (I don't have a DMP usable with a crossbow at this point (4J for me), and my son used his during Youth Weekend).  Archery tag?

Sorry for the dumb question, I swear I spent over and hour on the DEC site trying to find it... I'm sure it's right under my nose somewhere.

    TIA

  3. Hi All,

I've used wood stoves pretty much all my life.  But mostly where I had a pre-existing chimney (or paid to have a full fireplace built in new construction).  I am now installing one in a small "cabin", not for full time living/occupancy, but for weekends/hunting/fishing trips etc.  My question is, for those who do this, do you bother with the box and insulated pipe for the outside?  Or do you just run the regular pipe up thru the roof?

    TIA,

    jm

  4. I figured lots of folks around here probably have remote camps, cabins, etc.  Do you use any kind of monitor to alert you to power outages or temperature extremes?  I've been doing research, but there's a lot of different kinds.  Any thoughts/preferences?

  5. If that's a wolf spider it's the biggest one I've ever seen (well, at least it looks big in the pic).  Looks harrier (is that a word) than a wolf to me.  Ugly sucker.  I'll take snakes and rats any day over spiders, I hate 'em.

  6. My forays into camo have been sometimes disappointing (due mostly to my ignorance).  Due to having done some bushwhacking while hunting, I decided the stuff also needs to be "snag resistant" and "thorn rejecting" (my word).  Anything "soft and cumfy" didn't work for me (e.g., anything like fleece, which that Cabela's thing looks kinda like).  Then the problem with most of the heavy duty stuff that meets those criteria has been, it's noisy.

The quiet stuff tends to not be "snag resistant", and the snag resistant stuff tends not to be quiet.

Watching this thread with interest, thought I'd throw in my admittedly limited experience/thoughts....

  7. I used to be a builder many years ago.  Now I'm a lawyer (although I rarely admit it).  I'm planning to build a small house in Greene County, on property I own.  I have some drawings I made, and a bunch of questions about how to do this or that, what's cheaper, better, etc.  I may want to hire someone to do the full drawings, depending on the cost.  Initially, just an hourly consultation.

Back when I was re-evaluating my life (and made the insane decision to go to law school), my first choice was to become an architect.  I visited a few people in the profession, and they basically talked me out of it.  No money in residential architecture.  Unless you get the big jobs.  Which you probably won't get, and if you do, the client will drive you nuts.  Etc.  I understand the issues.

Greene County is southwest of Albany, down to the Catskills.

  8. Funny thread.  I wash my stuff myself - in fact , need to move to the drier right now, in prep for Oct 20.

As for drinking problems, I do make sure I never drink and drive.  I pull over, take a swig, then go one.

THis is for my first post   and the reason I'm on this forum is to quickly learn as much as possible about hunting. I've read lots and went hunting years ago.  I appreciate any advise others can give as well as constructive criticism.

I'm a 44 year old father of 7.5 year old twins living in Bergen County in the Soviet Socialist Replublic of New Jersey.   Yes,  I'm a die hard republican leaning libertarian at heard Conservative  american that voted for trump and is proud of it.  I have  rifle permit and frequent the shooting range.   A group of like minded fathers in the area and I would like to take our kids on a hunting trip to the wilds of Pennsylvania.  Here is my plan and I thank anyone in advance who can provide feedback and advise.

My main plan is to get a Penn hunting license for a day and take the group of 4 kids and 3 fathers and one or two rifles to a private land or public land  and shoot some hogs.   The goal is to each our children about hunting, respecting the animals and possibly field dress the animals, collect the meat and donate the meat to a local food bank, charity, etc.   We want to teach the children that killing is not a sport but a way of life that used to be and that we use the meat to respect the animals and what it means to hunt. At the same time we want to focus on safety, awareness and respect for nature,  teach what it really means to hunt and to be humane in dispatching the wild animal.  TO add to this whole plan, I want to only hunt for feral hogs.  They are a pest and I want to impress upon my children the fact that hunting these animals protects other animals and people as the hogs are a significant danger and are destroying property and the balance in nature.   Some of you must be wonderin, why the heck isn't he going to stock up his freezer with all the meat.   Well, I don't eat pork/ham/pig so that's out of the question but I want to provide the meat to others.  Killing the animals without a positive outcome is even an option.

So with all that, I've searched on google and found some private locations that have a whole menu of hunting game and some insane $$$ for each.   THere is no way  I'm going to shell out good money to have a simulated fake hunting experience.   So can anyone give some advice of where a hunting party can go to hunt for free?   Any fathers out there do this with their young kids?

Thanks again and happy hunting to all,

    ARiK

Great idea.  Not so great plan.

First, I don't know what a "rifle license" is.  Is that a thing?

Second, I don't know that you can get "a hunting license for a day."  I suggest you look into hunter ed and licensing requirements.

Third, 4 kids and 4 adults hunting is honestly not likely to result in much.

Fourth, I think you need a guide.

Assuming this is a serious post, my suggestion would be to sign up for one of the organized hunts done by professionals, which I think are out there in every state in the country.  Pricey, yes.  But with 4 families you should be able to swing it.  Otherwise, and I say this as someone very sympathetic to the idea - and I hunt with my 14 year old son, and am relatively new at it - I think you're setting yourself and all your friends and the kids up for a real disappointing experience.

Just my 2 cents, worth what you paid for it.

Absolutely.  We just gutted our first deer with my son (14) two weekends ago (youth weekend), with the help of a forum member here who has become a good friend.  The boy watched lots of youtube vids (as kids do), but it was nothing compared to the excitement of being there when one was field dressed.

Now he's hooked even more.  And I couldn't be happier.

  11. Win win situation.

I once shot a skunk who was getting in the garbage.  This was 30 years ago at a place we owned and rented out in a resort area.  It didn't occur to me that the skunk would immediately release scent on being shot.  Had to pay exorbitant hotel charges for our tenants for a few days.  Won't do that again.

  12. When I was a kid in the south, pretty much every greasy spoon had pork brains and scrambled eggs on the menu.  I had it once, in the wee hours of the morning, on a bet out with friends.  It wasn't very good, as I recall (and I don't recall much from those days)....

  13. Well, not tonight, but last night - I figure my first post in this thread, maybe you guys'll cut me some slack.  :)

Our first meal from a deer we hunted ourselves.  My son did the honors over the Youth Weekend.  Also had venison sausage, and local corn and squash from Greene County.  The steaks have local bacon pieces on them, were also marinated in apple cider from a nearby farm.  Life is good.

More around every single year.  Buddy who owns the property next to mine had 5 different bears on his cameras last year.

In one of the overgrown fields I hunt, there are acres of striped maple that are about 8 to 15 feet tall.  I've noticed bears have been ripping the top off some of them, at around 6 feet up.  Is that a territorial marking thing?

My son and I would be happy to drive over from Greenville and try to reduce the bear population there, if ya like.  He's dying to get a bear, now that he got his first deer (this past weekend).  :)
