I believe that is has to do more with very limited access to property for most hunters; the deer have more safety zones/posted property to hide out in than ever before (around my area anyways). Either way, we need to let more of 'em grow up...

Thanks for the update Joe! I agree that he won't net 200 but he's still one heck of a deer for anywhere across the whitetail's range...let alone NY.

Just emailed one of the DEC people that seemed to know the most about this deer in the message that was forwarded to me. Hopefully, he'll respond with some concrete evidence.

Stopped by the bowshop today and checked out the buck's jaws. Tom (the hunter) and Steve (bowshop owner) plan on having them sent out to be cementum annuli tested. The back molar shows some definate wear, he's older than 2.5 for sure...

If it's legit and not just internet propaganda, this has got to be the most impressive NY deer that I've ever seen. I still don't know what to make of the blank looking tag though? Hopefully, more details will come leaking out soon...

The only 100% accurate comment that I've heard reguarding this deer's age came from my dad. He said that he knew exactly how old it was...as old as he's gonna get. Can't argue with that one...lol.

The only info given was...shot on w. scott rd yesterday morning by mike mcmahan's son in law. green score 209.
It's sounds like it was taken this past weekend (12/11) in Cortland County near Factory Brook. I don't know if it's legit or not; I can't see any of writing on the tag...looks blank to me?

Here are three sheds for comparison. The one from the buck in this thread scored 58 5/8" with a 19 1/8" mainbeam (the tip was broken off). The other two are from a yearling buck and a 2.5 year old buck from the same area.
Is it possible that this deer was only 2.5 last year, making him a gigantic 3.5 year old this year? It seems impossible to me, I'm thinking that he was more likely a 4.5 year old deer.
There was a ton of standing corn all through the winter on this property so the deer had access to it through the worst of the weather. There's a big alfalfa field across the road that was cut and "freshened" 5 or 6 times this summer and last year's cornfields were put into soybeans this spring. Beans have never been planted here before that I know of. He was eating well so I guess that this could explain some of the huge jump in antler size that he had...

I would say 4.5 maybe even 3.5 the bases do not look huge. No way he is 2.5 and those sheds from last year 1.5!! A weight and more pics of the whole deer would help.
His bases were not very big compared to the rest of the rack. The first mass measurement between the burr and G1 was only 4 inches. The same measurement on the shed was 3 4/8".

He was 200# live weight. As I mentioned, I've actually had my hands on this deer and got to say that it was one of the most run-down looking bucks that I've ever seen. I don't believe that he was 6 or 7 years old, but was certainly older than 2.5...

There's no way that this buck was only 2.5 years old. Last years shed scores 58 5/8 with an additional 2" or so of the mainbeam broken off. So lets say it scored 60 inches...60 x 2 + 16 (est. inside spread) = 136 gross. Ain't no way a free ranging NY deer is gonna score that as a yearling. He was at least 3.5 and more likely 4.5 years old...

This deer is legit alright! I'm the guy who posted it on archerytalk and the other sites that were mentioned. This is me posing with him while Tom was in the bowshop talking with the NYSBBC scorer...
The shed was picked up this past March by my uncle's brother-in-law. I searched for the match for a couple of days but had no luck in finding it.
There's another giant on this farm that was seen by a couple of local guys chasing does out in field this past week. Haven't heard of anyone getting him. Maybe I can get lucky and pick up his sheds this winter.
