greybeard
I had a discussion today with a friend regarding hunting/pest control with airguns and he asked me a question which I didn't know. If you shoot an airgun aiming straight ahead and parallel to the ground( not elevated) how far would it travel until it hit the ground and stopped. I realize that a persons height and pellet weight would be a factor, but was just interested in average height ... we usually shot kneeling .. Pellets: (nothing special) wad cutter 14.3 gr..22's , and hollow point 7.4 gm., and sometimes field pointed .177 pellets .. The airguns we were discussing were : 1. 800fps, .177 air rifle 2. 600 fps .177 air pistol 3.. 500 fps, .22 air pistol.. It was a safety issue for how far it would travel, not killing range..I read that there was a formula for figuring this out, but I can't figure it. shawnhu
Grey, assuming that the gun is zero'd for 30 yards and the scope is 2.5 inches above the barrel, here's the results. Basically, the 7.9 grain Crosman pellet will travel in excess of 100 yards at an elevation of 24 inches in a kneeling position. At 3 ft/lbs of energy, it'll be like getting hit with a small rock. Keep in mind that there are other factors to the pellet such as ballistic coefficient and of course the speed at which it travels. These are all rough estimates, as the actual BC varies from within the same pellet traveling at different speeds. Hope this helps.

I came up with a larger number, but of course it was a "perfect world calculation" which did not include Cd or Bc, so it yielded a theoretical maximum range without outside forces exerted on the projectile.
