HuntingNY-News
It was initially scheduled to happen this Saturday. The 2014 Almost-Annual New York State Crappie Derby on the Whitney Point Reservoir has been rescheduled by its organizers for Feb. 8. The popular ice fishing derby was originally scheduled for this Saturday. "The current ice is holding its own, but not progressing sufficiently to allow us to continue to go with the original date of Jan. 25," according to a news release from the event's organizers. The ice thickness currently averages about 9 inches in thickness, according to one area bait shop owner. The derby is a family oriented event that allows everyone to get outdoors for a mid winter break. Although it is primarily an ice fishing event, other attractions are provided for spectators. There are usually far more spectators than registered contestants. The derby has been cancelled the last two years because of lack of ice. This year's purse is expected to exceed $5,000.
