McCarty hill state forest questions

Hi Folks

 

I've been giving McCarty hill SF a look for bow and opening of gun season.  Never hunted there before this year, have scouted it, and wondered if anyone had any experience hunting there that they might share.  Scouting hasn't shown much, except for tons of acorns (good) and chipmunks (evil).  And mountain bikers, hoping they stop riding in November.

 

How crowded will it be on opening day?

I have hunted it for 26 years, still do. The bikers generally stop riding around the time rifle season opens, but some of the knuckleheads think they need to be out there when we are so keep your eyes open. They like to where weird colors, some are dumb enough to where brown and white.  There will be many hunters up there, but they spread out pretty good over the nearly 7k acres that are available.  Deer numbers have been low up there for a few years, last year was as bad as I have seen. This year is a little better with more deer seen so far, and there are several nice black bear in the area.  Tons of coyotes have raised heck with the deer and turkey up there so if you get the chance knock some down.
