planting for you and them...

Recommended Posts

I routinely plant things with the idea that not only do the critters benefit but we do as well....besides the fact it balances out the costs in my mind. Fruit and nut trees are an obvious thing...the pumpkin patch, snap peas with the turnips, beets ,Chinese cabbage, chard. spinach are some of the things I have thrown into fall plantings for us...the strange thing is...fall planting of some of these things in the garden has never worked well...but thrown into a area of a food plot and they take off great....some trees  like mulberry not only produce healthy fruit for all ..but drying the leafs and making tea is VERY good for you ...daily use drops blood sugar levels, helps lower cholesterol  and is a great anti inflammatory, high in antioxidants. Another is the aronia bush...deer brows it and grouse ,turkey ,birds in general love the berries...but the berries are used in juicing and for jellies. it is now used extensively in the commercial juice industry...look on your labels of any dark mixed commercial juice and you will see aronia listed...it is a native of the great lakes region.Chicory is another good for you as well as the critters ...high nutritional value and good in helping to prevent weight gain.....lots of recipes out there but great sauteed with portabella's in a small amount of garlic infused olive oil.  So if the non hunting spouse ever questions your planting budget...put in some things you can bring home to share with them...besides the deer ;)
