  2. I'm camping on Cranberry this memorial day and wondered if there are any bait shops nearby? I'll need some minnows while I'm there. Thanks! Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk
  3. Look up Sean Hager. I bought a phenomenal dog from his wife Renee a few years ago. They are excellent trainers, I run into them at hunt tests all the time. They are located south of Buffalo, but it's not a bad drive from Rochester. I train with a small group in Rochester if you ever want any help.
  4. I haven't been there, but I know some guys that do. Price wise they're pretty competitive and I hear they have some nice property. Hopefully someone else can chime in who has actually been there. Sent from my DROID4 using Tapatalk
  5. I can't recommend a good British Lab breeder as I don't know of many producing good hunting stock. But if you're open to other options, I got my dog from Tammy Adsitt near Buffalo. He is a great waterfowl and upland dog. I've been guiding pheasants hunts at a preserve and he absolutely loves the game. We started running hunt tests this year and the judges even complemented him for being such a great dog. Tammy and her daughter are excellent trainers and can offer lots of support. Sorry for the infomercial, I'm just really happy with my dog! If you have your heart set on a British Lab, I would try contacting the WNY retriever club or Finger Lakes club for recommendations. 7. I am an electrician too! Winter isn't usually too bad, but these past few weeks have been brutal. Working in a half built greenhouse complex where some of the walls aren't up and even if they were, it's just glass. Couple that with a GC who doesn't seem too worried about getting temporary heat in the building, and it has been a rough couple weeks. I'm a young guy (mid 30's) but even I get worn out pretty quick in this weather. I keep looking to one of my coworkers for inspiration. He just came back from 2 years disability after a bad car wreck. His legs and hips are full of titanium. When it got down to -14 like it did last week, he said his doc told him to be careful cause his legs will freeze from the inside out. If he can do it, I guess I can suck it up! sent from somewhere out there....
  8. I find most of my grouse in edge cover along pine stands. Not in the pines, but in thick stuff along the edges. Especially if there are good food sources nearby. I bought a citori 20 gauge last year that I love for grouse and rabbits. A nice light gun that swings beautifully. A 12 gauge will work fine though, I used my 870 for many years to hunt upland, waterfowl, and deer. sent from somewhere out there....
  9. I wouldn't even worry about the refuge, there is a TON of DEC managed land within an hour of the refuge. Northern Montezuma and Howland Island are a couple WMA's that were already mentioned. If you go to DEC website and go to the state lands interactive mapper (SLIM) page, you can find detailed maps with satellite images and any special regulations for each property. I have found a lot of new hunting spots this way. The refuge has so many extra hoops to jump through, it's really not worth it with so much other open land available. sent from somewhere out there....
  10. Wow! Great advice everyone. Thanks! sent from somewhere out there....
  11. I understand the concept. Move slowly and stop periodically to scan for deer. I was wondering about specifics though. How slowly do you move? 100 yds an hour, two hours, etc? How long do you stop and how often? What types of cover and/or terrain do you look for? What are the best times of the day or season? I ask all this because I've always been a stand hunter but now that I mostly hunt state land, I actually have more acreage to work with but the deer get shell shocked pretty quick. sent from somewhere out there....
  12. Had a similar situation. Up in my stand by 5:30, got in nice and quiet with no flashlight. Just before sunup, these two guys come stomping through with spotlights, wandering aimlessly looking for a spot. After about 20 minutes I thought they had moved on down the hill because I didn't see or hear them after that. Around 9 I stood up to stretch my legs, turned and looked behind my tree, and there they are, sitting on a log 50 yards behind me. The thing is, they knew where I was because I flashed my light at them for that reason. I know it's public land and you can hunt where you want, but there are 1000's of acres available within 20 minutes of this spot! Did they HAVE to be that close? sent from somewhere out there....
  13. Larry is still there. I used to have permission to hunt a farm not too far from his place. I took one deer there and was not impressed AT ALL. I found another guy in the area who is much better, but now that I don't hunt down that way, I need someone closer. Thanks for all the feedback guys! I have some good ideas and look forward to getting my freezer stocked with venison! sent from somewhere out there....
  14. I've been able to mark pinpoints and rough paths in Google earth which can then be transferred into Google maps using the My Maps feature. For some dumb reason, the latest Google maps upgrade did away with the my maps and layers features, but all I did was uninstall the upgrade and revert to the previous edition. It's not the most precise system, but I tested it this past weekend and it worked well enough to put me within 20 yards of where I needed to be. This is at least free on your phone. There is also an app called back country navigator that is supposed to work more like a true backwoods GPS unit. The downside is I think it's $20 or so to buy the app. If you want, pm me and I can email some of the Google maps I made to see if that's the kind of thing you're looking for. sent from somewhere out there....
  15. I am very familiar with Costanza's, their shop is about 3 minutes from my house! I love their sausage, but I'm looking for someone to do the actual skinning and de-boning. I can make sausage in my kitchen, but I don't have the space or equipment to do the actual processing. Larry, thanks for the tip, hopefully I will need to call Charlie a few times this year sent from somewhere out there....
