  1. So we have this old Remington 788 .308 that we are restoring and at the moment it is disassembled.

I was cleaning the metal parts that we are keeping and went to take the bolt apart and think I messed things up.

They wont screw apart because I skipped the step of cycling the bolt so the gun is cocked.

Now the firing pin assembling is stuck in the current spot, it should be up further in the bolt plug.

First thought is ok just stick everything back into rifle and cycle the bolt. Well two problems with that.

    1. The trigger we have is disassembled and in pretty bad condition, not sure if it can be used.

    2. When I go to slide the bolt back in, it only slides in backwards.

How can I fix this situation?

  2. Reading the judge’s ruling, even though he didnt over turn the state’s law, he did provide some great arguments that may help future cases shoot these laws down.

One specifically was how the social media requirement violates 1st and 5th amendment rights.

He went on for 20+ pages on how the law is bull crap. So I am confident the state bit off more than they can chew… no way these hold up, especially if one gets to the SCOTUS.

sucks now but this wont last

  3. Good luck, look forward to pics!

My buddies and I are going to Gloucester in 2 weeks for an all day haddock run. Staying in the same hotel/bar that was in "The Perfect Storm"... may or may not have been a good decision lol

  4. Surprised no one has commented on this....
Personally i would shoot it first, make sure it has some potential accuracy beforeci dumped money in it, but thats me. Thats a good piece of glass, shame to drop the coin on something that might be iffy.
But I have installed more then a few Timney triggers and its worth and they are a solid choice. Fairly strait forward install almost all of the time. I have had to make small adjustments to inletting, but not much.
EGW makes good stuff. Id rather have conventional rings on bases; as i dont like narrowing loading or ejection, but thats just me too. But i needed a rail to mount short red dot on one gun.
Rings all depend on preference. I like a scope to mount low as possible, just letting bell clear barrel. Web will give you exact numbers on scope diameter, rail and rings to calculate clearance. Some buy scope and bases( in your case rail) and measure h needed.
I dont know bowling pin means? Example please?

Bowling Pin finish is a technique Remington did back in the day to waterproof seal their stocks, also brings out the grain nicely.

Here is my grandpas old Ithaca 12 gauge my brother just did.

  5. I acquired an old Remington 788 .308 from a late family member. From what I have read they are pretty good rifles.

My brother repainted the stock in a dark walnut and is going to seal it in the bowling pin style soon.

The scope is trash and in need of an upgrade. I want to put a Leupold VX-5HD 3x15x44 on it. I found a compatible rail shown below.

My question is what size rings do I need to buy?

Also opinions on switching out the trigger for this bad boy.

I think after it is all said and done I will have a pretty sweet little rifle.

I thought the same thing….6 guys.

You advertised roughly 70 acres for $1400 around here, you’d have to change your phone number for all the calls 24/7.

I hunted 80 acres that went to lease and that was $5000 in 2010. I have no idea now, and same guys are still there. And that just deer, no turkey or year round.

I can see that being more reasonable but for ~$1000/year I would want to have that land for myself... seems like it could get overhunted pretty easy with 8 guys.. that means i get 50 acres lol

  8. That is roughly $750/month (for 12 months, not actually hunting months)

For that based on current super high mortgage rates you can buy some land for $100,000 at that price.

Once my kids graduate college I plan on buying some land and subscribing to the food plot page and learning from all you pros... until then its public land for me baby!

  9. First Question:

Are there any gunshop/sporting good shop owners on here? If so what is the process going to be come Sept 1 with regards to ammo sales?

    Second Question:

With regards to the gun safe requirements, how is that going to be enforced? Cops cant just walk in without a warrant/just cause right.

    Third Question:

Ammo registration.... what about those who reload? Where is the information on a state website with instructions on how to be in compliance? Where are the forms I need to fill out.

    Fourth Question:

If I buy ammo out of state, how do I register it?

    Fifth Question:

I have my rifle in the truck sitting on my backseat I and run into gas station to grab a coffee and donut before I hit the woods... did I just commit a crime?

The ammo aisle was pretty well stocked , didn’t see any .243

I asked the counter guy and he said “ nope we don’t have any , we got three cases in yesterday and the Mennonites came in and bought all 3 cases “

    I guess there isn’t a limit anymore ?

Maybe everyone is stocking up anticipating issues after Sep 1st ?

    What happens Sept 1?

The dynamics of hunting within the blue line are complicated at times. The wild blueberries have done well in the southern Adirondacks this year from what I have seen so far .  We will be headed up in 2 weeks to drop gear caches for early muzz and hang a couple cameras. Stand sitting is tough up there . Still hunting edges of soft and hardwoods has been productive for us . The more ground you cover the better your chances of finding ground to return to . We hunt public land only up north .

Thanks for the insights, I didn't plan on sitting much at all which I guess means I am somewhat on the right track. We are going to be in the lower half of the park for ML as well, I will keep the blueberries in mind. What other tactics/guidance has led you to success over the years up there in the big park?

  12. Couple of the boys are growing up nice. This morning is the first time I have seen the guy in the top photo. 2nd one is on public in PA and bottom is a fawn who is gonna live to be 8 years and old die of old age with a belly full of pretzels.

  13. I used to be a great teacher - thoughtful assignments, high standards, earning an A was quite challenging, earning an F was quite possible, forcing students to redo sloppy work and come in before school or stay late after school to get students to where they need to be.

I still would be a great teacher but "you parents" (since we are making generalizations I guess that's all of you with kids) don't want that. When Little Johnny's essay (likely written by his mommy or tutor) came home slashed with red circles and corrections and a C- in the corner, I was blamed for making LJ feel bad because he was told the truth about his (and uh oh...maybe your) shortcomings. He shouldn't have to do it again or come in early or stay late because he feels singled out and embarrassed (and has lacrosse training!). He "deserves" an A because that would make him feel better.

If you parents can't accept that your spawn is not perfect and should be at school to be taught and teaching takes failure first and then you learn success and TRUST teachers to do what we choose to do as a career (or vocation?) and you parents keep telling then how evil and corrupt we are, you can no longer blame us for not doing our job..

We must agree that all kids are not honor students, right?
We must agree that all kids are not ready for higher education and maybe should pursue more menial labor positions (no shame in that!)?
We must agree that all kids are not winners, are not cute, are not funny, are not smart enough?
But how many would agree that THEIR LITTLE JOHNNY is all the above and that THEIR LJ will live up to Judge Smails epic statement on.children and education, "The world needs ditch differs too!"

Now I teach the children whose parents want their children actually taught and pass those others along. So sad what you parents have done to education.

My roommate at Officer Training School was a traveling nurse who was taking a huge pay cut to join. I asked him why at 35yrs old was he doing that.

He told me because he was tired of dealing with shitty people and having bosses motivated by not how effective drs/nurses treated patients ailments but instead by how “good” the patients rated their experience.

This ties in with my post, the lack of personal responsibility in this society is creating issues.

Now some of you will argue that the military today is motivated by the wrong things as well (see Afghanistan). From a 30,000ft view you have a point but down at the lower levels where I operate, the majority of people are awesome Americans and I love working with them.

  14. Sadly our education system is so dysfunctional that much of college is actually remedial work aimed at teaching kids what they should’ve learned in high school… So many things that need to be fixed, starting with offering competitive salaries to educators so that we can attract talent to teach our children. Looking through my high school peers, the ones that went into education aren’t the ones who were exceptional students themselves or who had a profound passion for teaching. Rather, it was just an easy path for them as the bar was exceedingly low.

100% the education level of population is the most important factor when it comes to a flourishing society.

It is a three part process though
    1. Nuclear family needs to provide a secure and solid foundation that develops a sound moral base.
    2. Education system needs to properly educate students to develop the critical thinking ability to function in adulthood.
    3. Community as a whole needs to be designed to enable proper social/community skills.

In order for that process to succeed it requires one key ingredient that is rare these days in our country, personal responsibility.

  15. I got my bachelors degree for free on the governments dime by using tuition assistance while on active duty. Still have my GI Bill to give my kids, they get free school and a housing stipend.

It sucked being away from home but now I am in the Guard and kids are still young.. worth it imo.

Anyone has kids/friends considering joining the service feel free to DM me.. I’ll give you the non-recruiter advice
