  1. I am going up for the opening weekend of ML. As well I am going to go up later when it snows and try and find a track to follow.

Not sure how far the park is from you, its only 45mins from me... but I figure with NY having such a long hunting season, throwing a few hunts at the park is fine.. its a low percentage play but man if you get lucky, that's a deer you are gonna remember for life.

I have thought about upgrading the plain jane stock.  I forget what I paid for mine, bought it from Beikirchs in Rochester, I think forty years ago.

My brother is refinishing the my stock right now... coating it like 10 times.. we stained it with walnut and he has coated it like 10 times with some concoction.. he calls it a bowling pin finish... should be done here in a week or two.. pretty excited.

We also are gonna add a little picatinny rail and top it off with a nice Leupold VX-3HD 2.5-8 scope and a limbsaver recoil pad... think it will look pretty sharp, its been enjoyable bringing the old girl back to life... ill post pictures when we are done

I have the same rifle, surprised you feel the need to replace the trigger.  They were a steal back in the day, I see them (in excellent condition) on GB for a grand or more.

I've read that some people had issues with the safety and also when I took the gun apart the trigger assembly was very very dirty... the value in the 788 is the action, the trigger is a part many people upgrade.

  4. I bought a Timney Trigger for my old Remington 788 .308. It was easy to switch out the original trigger with this one until I went to put it into the stock. The instructions mention that some inletting may be required and it looks like that is the case for my situation. The the safety is sitting too low to move from safe to fire.. so my question is what is the best technique to inlet and make this safety function/fit properly? I want to have a solid game plan before I start sanding/chipping away at the stock. No pressure though.. if I mess things up I will just get a replacement stock but it would be nice to just use this one.

My sharpening kit from stay sharp just arrived a few days ago. Only reason i ordered it was these broadheads are single beveled. and must be held at the right angle. Im sure a better knife sharpener can do it with different tools but i cant lol.

Stay sharp holder and 3 different grit diamond plates about 6' squares.

that's a big ass diamond plate my friend

Use a Shapie to blacken the bevel ,then you can see where you’re hitting it . A problem with jigs is if your edge bevel isn’t the same angle as the jig settings , in which case a complete reprofile would be necessary .

Which is why I use free hand most times , fine stone very light strokes ,like just resting the BH or knife on the stone , it’s own weight no added pressure , for a touch up . I clean my ceramic stones with cleanser first they work much better clean .

I just checked mine the other day , a couple could use some work. Taking them in and out of the quiver ,they sometimes hit the plastic, and over time that adds up I guess

Thanks for the advice.. I'll give free hand a go and see what happens.

  7. I bought a jig and some diamond plates a few weeks ago and have messed around a little bit... still cant get the correct angle so the one broadhead I have messed with isnt any sharper than when I started lol... I am sure I will figure it out sooner or later.. im not concerned out of the box but want to learn so I can sharpen my used broadheads

I use 150g magnus stinger buzzcuts

  8. I keep trying to come up with comparisons to describe this feud...

my latest thought.... Four Seasons is like the chef from a Michelin rated restaurant who is shitting on the burgers cooked at the mom and pop diner because they aren't made with organic wagyu beef... of course his burger is better but he can't get it through his thick scull that people actually eat/enjoy the burger from the mom & pop diner

sure "the industry" may use put that waygu burger on the cover of their magazines, cookbooks and websites to drive advertising so he argues it drives the industry... but dude your bucks are the top .0001%... how can an industry that has a historical culture of being middle class be driven by high dollar products that the average deer hunter cant afford?

F150s and Toyota Corollas not Lambos and Rolls Royces are the best selling vehicles in America and drive the industry.... I'll take my $40k F150 20" Spread 8 Point every time over that Lambo with a $900 oil change 215" Monster buck

  9. So you hunted with my nephew (joey) and the boys? Are you the one who used his Maxus? He is having bad luck with his A5. We bought 3 and all 3 had problems but my 2 have resolved
They are a good group of guys. Joey is a savage on the gun.

Yup they were awesome, perfect to go out as a first timer. Very friendly and willing to teach me the ropes.

The gun did better than I did lol. Also Joey took out 3 birds himself on one flydown… amazing shot!

Defiantly want to start incorporating bird hunting into my rotation!

  10. I've thought about that scope myself, its on sale for 509 now . How do you like the glass?

Its nice… now for perspective this and the Leupold I bought for my .308 are the first “nice” scopes I have ever owned. They seem more than sufficient to hunt up here in NY.

You will pay them the cash when you get there. They will be the one picking out which buck it is and you will pay accordingly. If it’s 120 class buck it will be 3 grand. You shoot the wrong buck and you own it. And your going to agree to be questioned and videoed at their discretion?

How much to shoot that monster you posted a few hours ago?

  12. @Four Seasons Would it be legal for you to place GPS collars on your deer like PSU and MSU have done? It would be cool to have the deer tagged and have the hunter also be tracked with GPS and then see how they move around one another during the hunt. It could even be shared live so we can all watch real time. Although that would mean the hunter wouldn't be able to carry a means for those of us watching to communicate with him to tip him off.

  13. Good man very nice gesture.  For what its worth I'm very close to you and I have great luck that time of year.
How far are you from Remsen? Doubt I will make it but a couple of members are right in that area.

We are going to be up near Stewarts Landing near Canada Lake. Not too far from Remsen.

  14. Due to some various injuries and surgeries, a few of my hunting buddies are unable to make it out to our planned hunting trip up in the southern ADX the opening weekend of ML (Oct 14-17). I Wanted to throw out an open invite to the group, if anyone wants to join myself and my buddy for a weekend of camping/hunting.

If interested let me know and we can coordinate through text/email.

  15. You guys getting all butt hurt on this thread are basically trying to argue that everyone prefers their eggs scrambled or everyone prefers them fried.

We all like fucking eggs for breakfast and you can’t tell me the egg industry is only profitable because of scrambled eggs.

You can’t have absolutes when it comes to human nature. This thread is going in a big circle, you are not gonna change anyone’s mind.

Hunting season has started, I’d like to wake up to some pictures of dead deer and funny stories, not this endless back and forth!
