Got this one on West Point yesterday afternoon. I was sitting on a rocky ledge overlooking a valley and he came walking by me about 3pm. I saw a smaller 4 point earlier in the morning, but it he was in the thick brush and I did not want to risk a bad shot so I had to let him go. I guess this was my reward for making a good decision on the don't shoot earlier. I will post a better picture later, but is the quick one I took with the cellphone.

When I lived in Alaska I attended a few bear hunting classes and the state actually makes you pass a course to bait for them. Here is the link to the website and it has a little information on judging size of the black bear. http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=bearbaiting.main I know it talks about using the barrel method because that is what most people use to bait up there, but most of us know how big a 55 gal. drum is to the comparison should be easy to visualize. I was fortunate enough to get my DMP tags for 3M. I was hoping for 3P because I am stationed on West Point, but the stars were not aligned for me. Now I am searching for a place to hunt. I was hoping for Stewart Forest, but noticed there are no rifles allowed there. I talked to the game warden and he said to try near Plattekill where there was about a 20 acre area to hunt that was open for the public. I will use if if needed I guess but I am assuming there will be a great number of other people with the same idea about that area. Anyone have any ideas where to hunt for doe in 3M that is open to the public. I would even settle for a land owner who has too many deer in their orchard/field and need them thinned out a little. If you don't open the freezer you might be fine. I drove from Fairbanks Alaska to southern Arizona with a freezer full of meat and fish. I was moving with the military and was not about to let my halibut and moose go to waste. Anyway there were a few days on the drive I was not able to plug in the freezer and when I did finally stop somewhere I checked it and everything was still solid. I think you may be able to go 3-4 days without power as long as you don't open the freezer.

I am hoping to see one while I am out deer hunting. I will probably not actively look for one, but if the opportunity presents itself I will not complain. I got lucky with my Alaska bear and shot him in the spring right after hibernation. When he was processed they had to add beef fat so he was not so dry. Best meat ever though.

I am new to the area. I am in the Army and have recently moved to West Point and am looking for a bear to put on the wall next to my AK black bear. The black bear I shot in Alaska was awesome and it had some of the tastiest meat I have ever had. I know one of the main reasons for that was because the area I got him in was an area where the bears ate almost 100% berries. I had heard if I shot one who lived near a salmon stream he would taste fishy instead of sweet like mine. Does anyone eat their bear they harvest in NY? If so do you find a problem with the meat tasting bad because of their diet? I want to ensure the meat is not going to be bad before I spend the money on a butcher to process it and I end of with bad tasting meat. Thanks, Tonyjoe

Thanks for the information. I will be living on post and have heard great things about the hunting a fishing in the area. @ Andersondnb: I will shoot you a message when I get on post and settled in. I have been stuck in on Fort Huachuca, AZ for the last 2 years and only made it out for Javelina a couple of times. Prior to this I was in Alaska and it was an every weekend occurrence to have the ATV out playing with the kids or hunting/fishing. Can't wait to get back somewhere where there is something other than cactus and rocks to hunt in.

I am in the military and will be moving to the West Point area in late September. I am still reading over the regulation, but does anybody have any information on good hunting in that area? I am a rifle hunter, but am thinking about branching out into the bow arena when I get there. I am looking for large game and would really like to get another large bear to rug out to put on the wall next to my Alaska bear. Any information or where to look for info is greatly appreciated.
