6:25-actually seen the flash of the gun on the property up above where I hunt. After that, all hell broke loose-too many shots to count. Unfortunately, none of them were mine!

I've been stopped myself, coming out of the woods after dark by the DEC, and asked why I wasn't out at sunset. That's just my personal experience with it. I'm not being critical, as I really couldn't care less, one way or another. If you get a rookie, they can be real hard-asses.

Actually, sunset, at least where I hunt, was at 4:32 PM, according to weather.com. That's still a 28 minute gap-at least here it is. He stated that the deer was not shot until after 5:00 PM. He stated that the gun shot was heard at 5:08 PM, while he was texting his father. This is not to imply that all DEC officers are one thing or the other. The point still stands, that the law is the law. I couldn't care less personally, but I know people who reported shots after dark, and they

Not to be a pessimist, but, while I agree with you that the other guy had no ethics, calling the DEC could potentially create problems for you also. The fact that you were still in your stand at 5:00, about 40 minutes after legal shooting light ended, may come into question. Personally, as was suggested, I think you should voice your opinion at the idiot that shot the doe. Also, as was mentioned, if the doe is still there, put it out, and tag it. Just my opinions, and certainly not meant to be negative.

Who on here has doe permits for 3G, and lives in Dutchess County?

Unfortunately, 3M can't be used in this area. -

Whitetail, I'll see what I can do to get you up there during muzzleloader. -

Okay, guys. To be honest, it's for does only. God knows, it took me long enough to get his blessing to take a buck. I'm being honest here. Whitetail, I'll see what I can do for you. I can never guarantee anything, though. -

Just one more thing. This would be for Sunday, as I would need Saturday to set this up with the landowner. The place is in Millbrook. -
I'm asking this for a very good reason. If you have been hunting for a while, and have 3G doe permits, then there may be an option to hunt for does on the property I hunt. I was unable to get any doe permits. The landowner wants the does weeded out. The only stipulation, is that I would have to be there while you are. I've been hunting this property for years, so, of course, the landowner trusts me. That's not to say that he wouldn't have trust for someone else, also, in the long run, but, if he doesn't know someone-well, that's pretty self explanatory.

Should the .410 be legal for deer?
13BVET replied to 13BVET's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I am going to respectfully disagree with this. Remingtons 2-1/2 #6, or 7-1/2 express is deadly on grouse. I have actually taken a few turkey's with the .410. The key is to have at least a 24" barrel with a full choke. The longer the barrel, the better it is. Having said that, slugs would be used for deer, not bird shot. -

While I certainly agree that there's most likely not a lot of interest in hunting deer with the .410, it may be a very viable option for young hunters who might be intimidated by the recoil of the larger bores. -
Should the .410 be legal for deer?
13BVET replied to 13BVET's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I actually talked to the biologist for Region 3 today, and asked him why the .410 couldn't be used in shotgun only areas. His response, was that it shot like a rifle. Upon hearing his response, I responded with "so does the muzzle loader". He was forced to admit, that I had a very valid point. Personally, I think the .410, and the 28 gauge, are quite capable of taking deer. Brenneke apparently now makes 28 gauge slugs. -
Was wondering what others hunters thoughts are on this theoretical question.

Bought White Hots at the gun shop for the muzzleloader yesterday, and I was hoping someone on here has had some experience with this powder substitute. How clean did it burn, etc. Any feedback would be great.

Sounds good. I promised him and his wife, that I would spend time up there after deer season, to try to cull the population. You ought to hear these things howling in the mornings in that area. It's unbelievable!

Let's keep in touch, Steve. It's an English guys property, and he can't stand the damned things, and wants them taken out.

Try Manchester Rod & Gun Club in Dutchess County. My understanding, is that they need members bad. -
I may be able to bring someone up on the property I hunt for deer, after the deer season, for yotes. The property owner is having a hard time with them killing his pets, and wants them done away with. Judging by the sign, there are a bunch of them there. Seen 2 of them the other day, but, was unable to get a shot with the bow.

It sucks. I think that pretty much sums it up on my end.

Went hunting at my spot in 3g yesterday, and there must have been 20 deer out there, running around like mad. Go there this morning, and only two 40lb. wonder deer running around. Baffles the mind. Where in the hell did they all go?!
-
In desperate need of a 20 gauge single shot. If anyone around the Dutchess County area has one, please let me know. Thanks.

Has anyone else noticed the lack of success as of late???
13BVET replied to Four Season Whitetail's's topic in Bow Hunting
They're not even chasing where I hunt in 3G. Watched a 4 pointer walk by an adult doe this morning, and he had no interest at all. Funny thing, also, is that the doe still had 2 youngsters with her. Weird! -
Sounds like the place I used to hunt in Fishkill. There were no specific deer runs, and oaks all over the place. Ironically, though, it turned out to be by far the best hunting spot I ever had. I would average three deer a year out of there (within season, of course). This "dead zone", actually turned into a gold mine, once the pressure began. The key for me, was to sit on a hillside, about 75 yards above a swamp. They would lay in the swamp, and consistently skirt the edges, without wandering too far from it. Half an hour before legal shooting light ended, these things would just appear out of the swamp-without moving all day. Try to find a run that goes into a swampy area, and set up outside of that. It worked wonders for me.
