  1. Deer live in a variety of environments including some that live in very close proximity to humans. Their behavior and reactions to human interaction are going to vary. Yes, I agree, a big woods buck is going to react differently to a bad human experience when compared to a suburban deer. But it'd be a stretch for me to say that a big woods deer is going to now be more freaked out and spooked, now more elusive in some way, now a mental basket case that's somehow now unhuntable, after one bad human encounter. If that were the case deer trackers in the northern states would never be successful.
  2. And here's where the hunting humor kicks in . . . Couple yrs ago my gf buys me electric socks and an electric vest. I didn't ask for them but she was a gem. Charge up these USB batteries, tuck them in and go. The vest is nice. 5 settings. Push the button on the collar. Last year opening day I'm sitting there thinking I need to get these socks running. Brutal cold. I reach down to click the button on the socks and there isn't one. No go. You need a frickin' app on your phone to run the socks. I mean you can adjust the temp on either sock individually. Crazy. I went home w cold feet smh. Times change.
  3. Ok. But who remembers the electric socks form back in the day that ran on D batteries? I bought a pair 25yrs ago for my #1 hunting buddy that always had cold feet. Sorry to hijack your thread @airedale but I didn't think a new one was worthy.
  4. Deer conditioned to human presence are not a lot different than forest deer with respect to this: When you get busted inside their comfort zone they all bug out and get harder to hunt. If you get busted hunting farmland deer you can probably kill the same ones tomorrow 1/2 mile away on the same farm from a different stand. Get busted hunting city deer and you might be able to kill them them the next day 150 yds away sitting on a bucket behind a neighbor's shed. It's the same idea but the size of the playing field is different. And the tactics differ. I find city deer more nocturnal. They move around all night guided by motion sensor lights and barking dogs. Seems to me they move later in the day, shrinking shooting time. That being said the city bucks do the same thing as big woods bucks during the rut. Get stupid. Make mistakes, get hit by cars etc. Same for the late season. They both hit food sources and hunker down.
  5. And there's usually some dinks running around here and there to try and fool. Not my house in the background but I've drank gin and tonics on that patio and killed deer off that lawn lol. Suburb of Philadelphia.
  6. I agree with @suburbanfarmer. Hunting them is still a challenge, but I actually enjoy the suburbia challenge more. It's a different mindset and different tactics (bowhunting mostly), but it's fun to think outside the box and get creative. I spent a lot of time in my early hunting career hunting that way. Good times.
  7. All v burger goes 3:1 ground pork and into a lean bulk venison breakfast sausage. That's what they like. Small patties. If I want a burger I go 81.29 beef on the grill or stop by 5 guys.
  8. It happens. Couple years ago we hunted in a pouring crap rain all day long. Couldn't see through my glasses or scope. Gun was not shootable at the end. Lesson learned. I actually prefer nasty weather at this point for hunting deer with the mz. I'm better prepared, they better be too.
  9. I hunt with a high calf rubber boot, medium wool sock over a regular Nike dri-fit sock inside. No issues. Covers 90% of my deer hunting time.
  10. The last couple years I've had the most fun in the late season. Lil' snow and a couple other guys on stateland and otherwise. Last deer I killed in NY was 1.1.23. Still have an arm's length of tags to fill this year. Keep your powder dry.
  11. Just had a chat with my gf. I'm her "super important person." We both agreed it was a good thing I didn't teach her too much more about firearms.
  12. Posted here because the discussion gets political. Elon Musk on the JRE recently. Elon tells it like it is.
  13. I'd keep my 3k in my pocket and lay low. Go about my hunting business like I always have. Keep my ears open and wait for things to play out. Lots of different ways this could unfold. No sense getting all cranked up about things outta your control. What's plan B? You got other places to hunt? Maybe time to find some. Always good to have options.
  14. At least two years, for our situation anyway. I know of a couple other applicants who've had similar issues. Last year and this year as well.
  15. Its that time of the year. If you are intending to go or have a college student attending school in '24-'25, it's time to file your FASFA financial aid forms (and TAP if applicable). Here's the PSA. When you input the parent's finances onto the FAFSA form DO NOT USE the IRS import tool that is suggested on the web site! Enter your earnings and tax info manually. There is a major bug in the system that incorrectly calculates and grossly overestimates the expected family contribution when you use the IRS import tool. Incorrect data will be sent to your college. Your EFC will be very high and you most likely will not qualify for a Pell grant. Here's the rub, you cannot correct the info on the FAFSA form once it's been entered with the tool! You cannot correct or appeal to the Feds that the FAFSA calculated aid amount is wrong! You can't redo the FAFSA! Your only option at that time is to submit an appeal to your college and attempt to get the matter straightened out with them. And that's a big rabbit hole with no end. I've unfortunately been involved with this fiasco a couple times and it's a big waste of time and frustration to get corrected. Hope this info helps someone avoid the hassle.
  16. Be proactive. Get the word out now that you and your other lessee's have zero tolerance for BS. Check your lease rights again for what actions you can take and what your legal authority is. The sooner everyone understands the new situation and that you're not too be screwed with the better. Sounds like you have several options to get the word out. Use them now. Lay the foundation today. When the time comes to purchase it'll be easier. Unsolicited advice, sorry. But I've been to that dance too many times. Hunting private land as a guest, lessee on several properties, owned several properties. Hunting makes people stupid. Don't let it ruin your good times afield.
  17. Pickled vegatables yesterday with my "crew". Mom n dad are getting older, slowing down quite a bit, but they love to help us do the work to put food away. 14 quarts, 3 pints pickled vegetables (cauliflower, celery and carrots). 2 quarts, 1 pint pickled brussel sprouts. 4 pints pickled leeks. 1 pint bell peppers, 1 pint hot peppers. 4 pints pickled red onions.
  18. My practice is the same as your's and many others. Biggest to smallest is getting a ride home. Anterless or otherwise. The places I hunt I have a fistful of tags. All seasons. I try not to shoot the small blockheads but I like shooting and eating deer so if I end up with one, no big deal. I don't get myself outta bed and go hunting for nothing.
  19. Italian made and sold here. Warning courtesy of Google translator. I'll do my best.
  20. Thought I'd try n get the scoop here first. What should I know about fishing Oneida lake in October? I have a friend who lives n dies to fish. I'd like to get him out on a boat for walleye. Help me out w some suggestions pls. @chrisw
