  1. Currently working on a bottle of Gentleman Jack that I am enjoying as well as a some Knob Creek that came as a Christmas present. The only bourbon I've found that I truly dislike is Jack Daniels black label, just too much charcoal for me. My go to has been Wild Turkey 101 for bourbon, Tullamore D.E.W. for Irish whiskey. Passed thru Kentucky and Tennessee on a recent trip to Florida and noticed signs for the Kentucky Bourbon Trail near Louisville. Now that sounds like a good long weekend trip ! On the water / ice front, I have tried crushed ice, cubes, rocks and have settled on a single large cube, (probably twice the size of a conventional cube) keeps the drink cool, melts slowly.

  2. Good to finally make it into the woods today. Got caught up on rest after 4 days of visiting one of our boys in NYC.  My hats off to those of you who live down there and still manage to hunt, can't be easy getting out to the countryside. I made it to the state land at 1130, sat for a couple hours, still hunted til 3, then sat some more. Saw no deer, but did come across two scrapes with hoof marks and turds in them, In fact only one squirrel sighting all day. Will be back out Thursday.

  3. Had my 17 ft. fishing boat stored at the old Bethlehem steel plant for the winter with Dr. Bobs storage. My sons Honda S2000 convertible was in there also, looks like both will be total losses. I can't imagine anything surviving this fire. I am glad no one was in the building, and hope no firefighters are injured fighting the fire. Time look at the insurance policy.

  4. I was just trying to check out some state land, hoping to find some goose fields, on the SLIM. First off it opens into a blue screen, that turns out to be the North Sea. Once I zoom out far enough I can drag the map to NY. The larger problem is that the state land areas are no longer indicated. Has the program content changed, or is this possibly a problem on my end ? Any info appreciated. I did send an e mail on the "feedback " link of the site, but who knows when or if that will even be looked at.

  5. I just put a new coat of mink oil on my old Sorel Chieftans. I could almost hear that old leather sigh with relief for getting some moisture restored to it. Those boots must be at least 25 years old, and I have never even had the urge to shop for replacements. Those boots have kept me warm and dry in the worst weather I have ventured out in.I have a few favorite pieces of gear some newer, one or two older (hand me downs from my Dad) but I can't think of a better purchase I have made than those boots. Curious to see , what is that one best thing for you ?

  6. Another leftie here, I have and love a Ithaca model 37 in 12 ga it bottom ejects, also have owned a Marlin 336 in 30-30, also bottom eject.  Both of these are fine for deer and accommodate the left hand shooter. I do wish, after some further research I had bought the Marlin in 35 cal rather than 30-30, I liked the ballistics better.

  7. Lawdaz, The one with a couple years experience bow hunting and a few years more than that with firearms is 24. The first timer to the woods is 33. The younger one did indeed just buy a self climbing stand that came with a harness. I am unsure of the quality of the harness, I have not seen it, and probably couldn't tell good from bad if I had. I'm going to search for a thread on harness style and quality now.

  8. So... I am strictly a gun hunter however two of my adult sons are archery hunters. The eldest is just starting this year and has a birthday coming up in a couple of weeks. I am looking for gift ideas in the 100.00 dollar range for a brand new, inexperienced bow hunter. All he has is a bow and some arrows. I understand the importance of practice and had considered range time, however he and his brother do practice at my place. So, what to get him ? He is a total newbie to hunting so no camo clothing, no nothing as of now.

  9. I went thru a similar situation some years ago, it helped me to think that my new job was finding a job. Do something each day to help further your search, maybe fine tune a cover letter, make follow-up calls, drop off resumes, network...Taking this approach kept me from getting down (too often) and just feeling sorry for myself.

  10. I have given up on opening week of gun season on public land. I must say that after opening week things quiet down and you can have a nice hunt with little to no company in the woods.

  11. I spent this last weekend driving from Buffalo to NYC and back, helping my son move home. My route took me across the southern portion of the state , RTs 86 / 17 / 87. The beauty of our state is amazing, the rolling hills in the southern tier, the Catskills were the best, the roads following the creeks and rivers beautiful. I have to hand it to you guys who live in NYC and still get out to hunt and fish, you have a special dedication to fight traffic and travel just to get out to areas to pursue your sport. If we could just get the politicians to stop screwing things up you couldn't find a better place to be!
