  1. That's what I'm thinking now as well. Thanks for everyone's replys.
  2. Here's another reason for more than 5 rounds - he shoots just like me!
  3. Pygmy - Didn't realize there were two 7mm - he suggested the 7mm-08. Doewhacker - I did consider the 270, but I'm looking for the lightest recoil in a reliable deer caliber - something more forgiving - with common and inexpensive ammo.
  4. Thanks guys. I was talking to a guy at the gun store today and he was suggesting the 7mm as a good compromise. Just slightly more recoil but the larger bullet is a little more forgiving for deer. If what he says is true, I think I may actually go that route. I'm looking for a second rifle to the 30-30 I have. Something with a little less recoil but good for more distance.
  5. Hey all, I was wondering how many of you out there use a .243 for deer and if so what you think the benefits or downsides are over say a 30-30 or 30-06. Thanks
  6. jpastor, Sterling and other areas in region 3 are my regular hunting areas. Let me know when you're heading out and maybe we can meet up. KB
  7. Virgil, I wouldn't go so far as to say that the "oppressor" no longer exists. Many believe that the founders would have considered ALL governments a potential oppressor - including the new one formed by them at some later time.
  8. Haha - mortars could help ease the walking too! IIRC, the 2nd amendment doesn't say firearms, it only refers to "arms" so someone could conveiably argue that biological, chemical, etc. weapons are just another form of "arms." But you're right, I haven't seen anyone try to use that argument. The point was only that you can't really argue that there are NO limits. Thankfully, I think the Supreme Court is coming around to resolving a lot of these ridiculous local restrictions. DTG3k - I like you're line the best - may have to steal that one from you.
  9. I agree with most that it's a stupid law and that what's needed is more emphasis on going after criminals. I don't think magazine, ammunition or the number of gun limits are the answer to reducing gun violence. I also agree with Virgil's point that you can't argue that there's no limit on firearms / weapons. Would anyone here say that biological, chemical, or nuclear weapons ownership should be allowed for law abiding citizens with the proper permit?
  10. I haven't seen or hear of those tulips leaves being a food source previously, but now that I think of it I don't recall seeing any of those leaves down on the forest floor. Will keep an out for it going forward. As the guy says, it's a very short window - about a week. Along those lines, what this guy says and the DEC list aren't conflicting since the DEC list is a WINTER food list and this guy says the leaves are only preferred for about a week when they first drop.
  11. Yeah - Jersey sucks (sorry, but I was born and raised in NY so Jersey can't really do right by me - even when they do!) I think they may be changing the bear hunting curriculum requirements in that they will just roll it into the general hunter safety courses, but it was like another two days of classroom and testing requirements - not interested!
  12. I'll typically head to Somerset and Hunterdon counties since their included in those zones with Sept. season dates. Specific areas probably wouldn't matter much since there's plenty of deer around. If you're looking for good bucks I would go to areas with the antler restrictions. I won't bother with the Bear hunt since they make you jump through a whole other set of classroom requirments first - I'd just as soon take a bear if I come across one while deer hunting in NY. I wouldn't target bear specifically.
  13. Should also add that the other thing I find good of Jersey is that kids can start hunting at 10. That and the early season should give some good opportunities to get kids out earlier and in decent weather conditions.
  14. I just started archery this year to take advantage of it, but still only got out a couple of half days with no luck. The extended season is great, but still having HUGE garden spiders around to walk through their webs is not! I'll agree that their's great opportunities with huge swaths of the state with Unlimited does bags - you have to take a doe first in most areas before a buck and there are antler restrictions in some areas as well. I don't agree that there are huge areas of state or federal land - at least compared to NY.
  15. That's terrible. Call it in to the DEC. Probably won't be able to find the specific folks responsible, but they'll probably put the spot on a list for future poaching stings.
  16. Sorry, I should have been more specific. I was referring to the Black Rock club in Mountainville, NY. It's down in Orange County. I'm not sure if the one you are referring to is the same one or not - none of those names or references are familiar to me.
  17. Afternoon all, Wondering if anyone has more information or knows a member. I'm interested in joining, but do not know any members who could possibly sponsor me. Regards, KB
  18. LOL - two new ones for me. Someone allowed to testify before congress without swearing in and a drug dealing President of U.S.!
  19. Heads should definitely roll, but I don't buy the Obama conspiracy - this "gun walking" strategy was started under Bush. From the CBS news article timeline posted above: "CBS News reports on a second alleged ATF gunwalking operation called "Wide Receiver" in Tucson. It's also run out of the Phoenix office and dates back to at least 2008 under the Bush Administration."
  20. Down here where I hunt it's clear the deer are either very overpopulated still (in Northern NJ, 3S - Westchester) or still abundant (3M, 3P,3N). I usually see deer just about every outing including those I may see along the roads to my hunting areas. Very obvious browse lines are still easy to see in many areas with little to no undergrowth other than Mt. Laurel. In general, I also think that winter kills (at least large ones) and browse lines are on the extreme end of the over population spectrum. For example, you may not have an clear browse line and still have deer numbers that are too high for other species such as grouse or rabbit - which I like to hunt also. I'm also sure that the DEC does not have the funds to get more boots on the ground for habitat surveys on a regular basis for all areas so certain areas can see low populations until the permit allocation is adjusted based on habitat.
  21. Another option you may want to consider is that the hunting age in NJ is 10. Lots of areas that allow unlimited does and the archery season starts in a lot of areas just after the first week of September. I imagine it'd be a good bit cheaper hunting public land in NJ
  22. Thanks guys and a safe season to you all as well.
  23. Afternoon all, I just found the forum a few days ago and have been taking a look at some of the topics. I'm originally from NY and still do most of my hunting there - although I live in NJ now - so it's great to see the focus on NY. I also must say that compared to some of the other forums I've seen the group here doesn't seem to be that flamable! Of course I've seen a few postings that seem to fly off the handle but it looks to be in the minority - but in my general feeling is that it's a good group of folks. Anyway - look forward to participating and maybe meeting some of you in the field. Regards, Kevin Burke
