  1. Another vote for getting the deer in the freezer ASAP. I never let mine hang. I see absolutely no point in this. Besides, I get a little squeamish thinking about all the airborne bugs and nasties flying around landing on my deer, laying eggs, dropping doo doo, etc. Yuck!! Longest I've ever let it hang was overnight. And that was only because I shot the deer in the afternoon, hung it in the garage, butchered the next day. I like to take a few packages out of the freezer then let them thaw out for a few days in the fridge before cooking it. I think this works much better. I've found that the meat can sit in the fridge for quite a long time too. I've had pieces sit in there for over 10 days and still be fine.
  2. I had nuisance permits for my brother-in-law's and father-in-law's farms. When we got the permits, I did not have to show any proof of economic loss. But this was several years ago. Maybe now they changed the rules. At the time they handed out permits on a percentage of land being used for crops basis. It worked out to about one permit per every 50 acres. The "season" lasted from when the permits arrived (usually mid May) until the end of September. My permits were always doe only. Was not allowed to take bucks. IFAIK, all nuisance permits were anterless only but I heard some people claim they received buck permits too. Never personally saw this though. I hunted using these permits for about 5 years or so. Took an avg of 3 deer each time. I predominantly used my shotgun but I did take my rifle once or twice. I stopped hunting nuisance permits for a couple of reasons. One: It's no fun in the summer. Simply too warm and too many bugs. Two: after killing a deer in the summer, it is a major rush to get the deer from field to freezer. Gutting in the hot weather is a challenge in itself. Fighting off flies and other bugs while gutting is a huge PITA. Then of course, it's a mad dash to get the deer processed and into the freezer asap. The third reason I don't go anymore is that it takes away from the regular season. I like building up the anticipation to opening day. If I'm hunting deer year round, that feeling is completely gone. Plus, I'd rather leave the does around to attract bucks to my land. When I got the nuisance permits, I also got into the DMAP program. Every year, the DEC sends me roughly 10 DMAP tags just prior to the hunting season. These are basically a whole bunch of doe tags that I can use only on the designated land. I've never come close to using them all. I don't mind getting them and have used them to tag my does instead of using my regular tags. So a few seasons ago, I called them up and told them I no longer needed the summer nuisance permits. Both of my sons are now of hunting age. Between the three of us, I really don't even need the DMAP tags anymore. I wouldn't be able to fill them anyways.
  3. I always wear orange during the gun season. Archery and turkey season I wear normal camo.
  4. I haven't checked the cam recently. I'll have to make it a point to go look soon.
  5. Both mine and my son's Rem 870's with rifled barrels shoot the Hornady SST's very well. We've been using them for the last few seasons without issue. Mine has a 4x scope on it and my son uses a red dot.
  6. For my 7mm-8, I use Federal Premium Accubond 140gr.
  7. I killed this deer with my bow last season. He had come in from behind me, walked right next to the tree my stand was in then moved off to my left. He turned perfectly quartering away and I drilled him at about 15 yards. He ran due west of me and then down the hill where I couldn't see. The crest of the hill is about 80 yards away. I waited 30 minutes then got down and checked out the spot where I shot him. The blood indicated a perfect hit. I decided to go ahead and follow the blood trial. The flow was very heavy. I found the deer lying just over the crest of the hill. He's a nice little 8pt, 9 if you count the point on the base of the left antler. Unfortunately, you can't see the g3's in this pic.
  8. I have an '03 Suzuki Eiger 400 4x4. Back then when I bought it, this machine was ranked best buy for the 400 class of machine in several different magazines and on-line reviews. When I bought it, I wound up buying a trailer to haul it around on as well. It has served me very well. In fact, the very first time I took it hunting, I was using some nuisance permits and shot two does. The quad pretty much paid for itself that very day!
  9. I know the May's very well. They are surrounded by some pretty good land. Unfortunately I don't believe anyone is allowed to hunt in that area. One of the owners of a large piece of that land had one of their prize Great Dane's shot by mistake. That was quite a long time ago but they still keep out all hunters. Nope. The owner died a few years ago. The entire inventory was purchased by a gun shop out near Sodus. I bought a few guns and a lot of ammo from Appletown over the years. Was sad to see the old man go. I've thought about buying the place many times.
  10. All my stands are 15' to the platform. I just ensure that I put them in a tree that can provide a good amount of concealment. For me that means putting them in a tree that has at least one other tree right next to it. this way, I can remain somewhat hidden behind another tree trunk.
  11. Muzzy 3-blade 100gr. Been shooting them for quite awhile with no complaints.
  12. I didn't own a shotgun when I began hunting. Only a bow. So I was sorta forced into using a bow to hunt. I didn't buy a shotgun until three seasons later. The challenge and slightly nicer weather are all factors in my enjoyment. Plus I like the sense of solidarity. Not hearing shots ring out helps to keep me feeling like it's just me and the deer.
  13. I just recently finished assembling this...... Anvil arms lower and a RRA upper with 18" heavy barrel. 5.56mm. The scope is a Bushnell 4-12x40.
  14. At the bottom of the image just at the end of the Bushnell banner. We're thinking it must be an owl but not entirely sure
  15. Deer And Turkey Hunting Syndrome. I'm hoping y'all can help! ;D Wife, two boys (17 and 12), dog, cat, rabbit! I hunt family property in the 8F WMU near North Rose. I also hunt around Macedon. Uncle has a place up in the Constableville area adjacent to a lot of state land. Haven't been up there yet however. Just introduced my youngest to turkey hunting this past spring. I think he had a good time even though we didn't get a bird.
