Serious acorn abundance.. Ridges with pine and hardwoods.. On my still hunting today I found 2 bedding areas. Fairly close to my spot.... Also it seems someone visited the spot while I was gone for an hour... Earth was tore up. Acorn pieces and fresh scat nearby.

This is spot on.. I wear other shoes and keep my jacket and boots in the back.. When I get out I spray down. Suit up and go.I fully understand the concept of the gas smelling and scent control... Especially with bow. But I think the whole "gassing" comments and other elitism tossed around here is rediculous... I participate I many various forums and the vibe here tends to be hostile a lot. Just saying. I think I'm gonna have to start starving myself for 2 days before the hunt so my bowels are empty... Keep all my clothes at the bottom of my stand.. Then when its time to go I'll drive naked. Walked the 2 miles in socks... Bury them 100 feet from the stand. Get dressed in my gear that's been sitting there for days. Then encase my body in a sterile vacume seal bag with nose and eye holes.... They'll never smell me.

Alright fill me in... What is the prejudice against getting gas before hunting... A couple of time this year I've come out to an empty truck and the wife hadn't told me... Sometimes u just need gas... Considering people uses wheelers and sidebys to get to their spots at times. I can't imagine a little gas is going to wreck your hunt unless you spray it on yourself. So what's the deal with the gas comment? From all the posts I've seen mentioning this. There seems to be. ALOT of "eliteism" here.. I guess I should hang up the rifle as its only an axis.. And my outer hunting clothes are from Walmart.

So I've been putting in a lot of time since northern tier opened... Sat mornings in place by sunrise.. And again sun morn and evening.. Even took a bunch of time off.. Figure at 3-4 hrs a trip I've invested over 40 hrs.. I've been in 6k, 6p and 6r. No luck and each spot is different type of terrain... Plenty of sign. All over... I've seen a couple way far off. But nothing close enough to even sex. Boo hoo for me:(. Banging in to work tomorrow and putting in another full day. Going to 6k region in hopes of using my DMP. Question 1) should I be still hunting or simply sitting? Its state land and I did both this morning... Tons of sign no visual.. I have one decent comfortable sit spot I know of with good field of view.. I only have 4 possible outings left and I'm scrambling to hook up with something. 2) one of my Itasca's heelbplate has separated a little and is sucking some water and squeeking with each step... Shoe goo to seal it up? Thanks ****edit just ckecked the calander I'm probably over 60 or 70 hrs at this point. Wish it was more but with 2 toddlers I'm thankfully the wife has been good about it

I don't get it I guess... Maybe I just can't comprehend the incompetence... To me all aspects of safe firearm handling apply to hunting.... Know your backstop and be 100% sure of what your shooting. Always point in a safe direction....etc.. I understand accidents happen. But I'm sure most could be avoided d with thought.

So is there some reason not to wear orange? I wear orange for the exact reason u just listed to not get shot or shot at.... Just a simple light vest that I then put on a tree near where I'm sitting......

Northern Oneida county... I have always been a little skeptical of it.. Hard to determine if its just bluster or if people are actually doing it.. A good friend of mine.. Non hunter.. Said a guy he worked with showed up 2 hrs late to work on a Saturday with 3 dead doe in the truck. And he was scrambling to find doe tags for them...taken from the side of the road. He surmised from inside the cab giveen The smell of gunsmoke To me this was not only unethical and unsportsman but was a prime example of individuals giving the majority a bad name... as if we didn't have enough crosshairs on us a firearms owners in the first place.

Wow this imploded. So I guess I might as well toss this log on as well.. A guy I work with talks of driving down the road... Seeing deer in the field... Hoping out . getting some feet off the road and taking them... Mind you this isn't his property nor does he have permission... Lots of fields round here. Personally.. I would never do this... My understanding is the law requires you to be Xx amount of feet off the road... Assuming he is doing this in legal hunting hours.. Xx distance from the road... He at that point would only be trespassing... Correct? (Leaving ethics and scruples out of course) (I have heard similar stories for years prior to even taking an interest in hunting)

Just cross referenced the app against that link.. Had rise/set within a minute or 2 for The entire week... So I'll take that as reliable.
-
I like the idea of leaving a half hour prior to. I have the sunrise/set as apart of an app. So I was aware of the sunset time... However I was operating under the misinformation of "staying till dark ".... Now I'll have to cross reference the rest of the "advice" my buddy gave me against the regs... Started suspecting a little foul play when he was hounding me to buy my 2nd doe tag off me. ( needed a reprint as the kids misplaced my first set of tags). Shredded them since then.
-
Thanks for the help all. And the ridicule. Question was generated due misinformation and my experience at sunset with bad eyes. .. Apologies for kicking the hornets nest. I'll reach out to other areas for further questions as I don't have a close friend or family member to guide like so many may have had the luxury. My fathers hunting experience consisted of going once and falling asleep. Thanks for the helpful replies. Point taken

Good point. Took the class 2 years ago. I'll grab one of the regs magazines from herbs and brush up...Glad I was able to provide some levity for everyone. Please don't hold it against me [emoji26]

So then the regulation goes by the "predicted" sundown and pack it up even if you can still see fine. This is exactly why I posted this.. As a gentleman I went with said "I stay until dark" which along with some other things he's said seem suspect
-
So I was out last night.. Sunset predicted at 4:45.. At that time the light was mostly gone... I ended up packing it in @509 and within 3 minutes needed my headlamp... For the period from 430 to 5 the light faded quick.. With my bad low light vision due to astigmatism I had a hard time discerning objects.. However with the binos and scope I had clear picture due to the focused light filtering... So my question is how far past predicted sunset do you stay? For what its worth as the light goes I would have to be 200% on what I was shooting. But that goes for full light as well

What I learned from my first true hunt today...

I was looking at a tree strap on swivel seat but I don't care for the bulk.. I think a simple foam seat will suffice for this first season.. Definitely want a better barrel for the Mossberg though the one I have was cut down and threaded for chokes at some point.. -

Thanks for the tips! I had a piece of foam ready to go but ditched it last minute. -
1) sit pad, sit pad, sit pad 2) lose some weight 3) waterproof spray my jacket it leaks at the shoulder seams and runs down my arms. 4) pick a spot where I can see and area that is getting a lot of light. As the sun goes down fov decreases drastically. 5) sitpad sit pad sit pad 6) swamp boots rule. 7) pare down my ribs pack to carry less stuff. Just the necessities hide my tags in a safer place( kids must have got. To them and I had to run a get a reprint omw to the spot.) 9) get a looser sling for extended shoulder carry. 10) sit pad sit pad sit pad All in all a great first experience despite the rain as soon as we settled.
