  1. I had feeling this would be the case.. I spend a lot of time in the woods (bushcraftin) prior to taking up hunting and I've heard quite a few shots here in the area during the season. Maybe I'll look further northeast in the 6k area.
  2. Wow 130 views and no replies. Lol... Maybe I'll be one of the few.. Also of note this is my first season and the land I have access to is southern tier. So I'm public landing it till then.. If someone local could recommend a better place in Oneida county, I'm open to advice. PMS are welcome as well.
  3. Rome sand plains. Should expect alot of company? any familair? headed out opening am. as its close to house and i have engagements later on. *edited for language sake.
  4. I saw more signs of man as time went on... Here is another pic of an opening into the gully. And finally another marshy meadow Again noticeable trails and prints.. However at this point the trail I'd been following was 4 feet wide.. Continuing back to the road there was old furniture and trash.. A couple of questions.... On this state land is this wood bench fair game? Should I worry that the marshy areas are close to the road and more easily accessible or just go for it? When walking should I be on the game trail or off the side? Or does it not matter due to their scenting abilities... I did my best to LNT to the point of swallowing my redman juice and hold a leak the whole time... I did spray some off deep woods before going in... Thoughts?
  5. Alright made it to the ridge and walked its length.. Here's a picnopsys. Exiting from the road through about 50yards of trees it opened up to a marshy meadow... Heavily used trails and obvious bedding areas abound... But pretty darn close to the road which makes me think over hunted. I went straight through staying about 5 feet off the game trails. No pics till I made I through the woods to the ridge.. Not much on the way there. Crisscrossing trails and prints.. But fairly dense foliage and trees made for short viewing diatances. And low and behold.. And main line running across the top and a mother about halfway down the hill running its length. As expected. One side had a decent field of view.. Flowed the ridge up to its zenith and there was a good sized bowl formed... But little to no view due to dense small tree foliage. I'm sure this will be down in the coming weeks. Following the game trail I came upon an obvious man made bench on the opposite sides of the bowl. Decent view into the bowl and a game trail down in the bottom of the gully. After a bit the game trail turned onto the remnants of a manmade trail of some sort being overtaken by the forest.. A hundred or so yards down it became wider and obviously used. Continued....
  6. excellent!. Thanks for the heads up. Ill report back with how it looks.
  7. its a sw to ne running ridge.... hard to tell the height from the contour lines but there are only 3-4 dpeending on the map.... im guessing between 45 to 60 foot height difference form the surrounding land Should note that the swampy/marshy area is on the eastward side.
  8. After scouring various maps of the same state land. I think I have located the area I want to scout.. The land itself is not a large plot and there are some houses bordering... maybe 10 in total aroudn the 10,000 acre area... The spot ive chosen to scout is slight ridge, narrow and long. one side has staright hardwoods, the other slopes down to a marshy piney area..and small forest field.. I should note it only shows ona couple of topo maps. not all of them. it is well off the beaten path and about 2 miles in from the nearest road. also on the other side of a marsh near the road... after consulting several different maps , skirting the marsh should be no problem. I have 3 maps with locationa s well as a GPS caltopo map on ym phone. My question is thus.... should I be looking to set up at the top, bottom or middle of the ridge? it is long so should I position on the end of in the middle? My thoughts were to walk its length and pick the spot that provides the best vantage of both sides of the ridge if possible... leaning more towards the side with the field..... I an fairly adept at locating the game trails so they will definately sway my positioning. I ahve 2 other seperate lands I need to scout and survey So I am only choosing 1 spot per area. This spot is intended ot be an after work hunt. quick in time and out time. Thoughts? Advice? top of the hill? halfway?
  9. Nope they didn't tell me.. Just took 1st and 2nd. Had I known that's how it worked I would have picked a different 2nd choice.
  10. Yep I called the store and he explained it.. 2nd choice needed a pref point for that area
  11. Just got home and checked the tags. Bear. Standard deer. And 1 single doe tag for 6k
  12. they had a 1st choice and 2nd choice... and stated if you didnt get 1st choice it would default to second..... 6k is a preference point zone... Maybe I should have specified i wanted 6r for my second tag
  13. is it possible to get a tag switched? 2nd area is a med. demand area.
  14. okay so i should double check and make sure they didnt give me 2 in 6k rather than what i wanted which is 1 in 6k and one in 6r store clerk said 2 is a lottery and no gaurantee u get 2 does tags
  15. i seem to be googling conflicting info.. and local hunting store jockey said one thing.. and a friend said another.... I know you are not guaranteed your 1st pick of zone selection. but do i have to ask speciffically for a 2nd tag and pay an extra 10$? or is it also random whether or not you will get 2 doe tags? in short I got my preference of 6k ( yay me) but only got one tag. I was hoping to get a tag for a sperate area where i have some private land. im confused :/ thanks in advance
  16. Thats for the probability site... looks like my chances are good. Picked up a .308 handi. ro replace my 12g mossy this year.
  17. WOW that map is amazing! Thank you! My understanding is that with Doe tags I get to pick 2 areas correct? for instance 6p and 6r is where I have accessible private land. And that the standrad buck tag will let me go north and south?
  18. I figured google would be my best bet.. I use USG topo maps off a website for backpackign in the daks. But they are quite old. THANK YOU for the ZONES map!!!!!!!!!!!! I wa skillign ymself trying to google image search it
  19. Hey all. Looking for some help as my googlefu seems weak lately. I am tryign to locate 2 things... 1) a map of nys dec hunting zones overlayed an actualy map with towns and villages and what not so I can determine where to choose my doe tags. 2) Online, easy, free, and printable TOPO maps for CNY. Thanks in advance! PS. first serious season. going to be putting the time in this year
  20. Just want to chime in here... I plan on doing a food plot at some point... nothing large though just a small one near my property boundary. And only in an attempt to draw the dear away from my garden. For ethical reasons I will not put my stand in direct line with the plot. As I dont plan on hunting from the stand. I see no reason or problem with a food plot. especially as it serves for yet another reason to get out in the woods. and in reality a person only has so many tags. and if the primary goal is meat in the freezer and not points, isnt working a small plot for the purpose of harvesting a single animal similair to farming a garden for the pourpose of a harvest? just my .02c
