I was driving home on 365 after picking up my kids. And I saw a truck in the oncoming lane pop a small animal of some sort and as I drove by his tail and body were whipping around... So I turned around and went back in the pouring rain to find this. He was passed by the time I got to him. Which was good as I didn't relish finishing the job. I was surprised to see this ermin? As I've never seen one in This area and it is literally a 1/4 mile from the stomping grounds of my youth. Good to see one.. Just wish it wasn't under these circumstances.

Excellent. I appreciate the responses... Lots of great info here. as well as giving me a price point for a basic quality release... Based on the arrow talk I assume that you would want to get the same arrow shaft and vanes for hunting and target arrows for practice correct?
-
Thanks g-man.. I was thinking they wouldn't dig wet feet if they didn't have to... The roosting is helpful.... Would they prefer hardwoods or pines?
-
This is actually a mossy wetland area to heavy like me and you sink ankle deep. And the typical woods listed. In the previous post... Are either of these viable for state land turkey?
-
Alright rather the. Start a new thread I'm updating this one.... I scored a new 26inch vent rib with a full choke set.. Currently looking for a extra full turkey choke.. I also got a slate call and was shocked how quickly I picked it up... Based on YouTube vids I'm pretty confident in my calling after practicing off and on for several weeks now.. Scored a hammock seat as well now just looking for a light weight self standing wall blind.. ( have my eye on a couple.) It looks like I'll be hunting solo this season. My partner is kicking into workaholic mode with the snow melting. I have a couple of spots in mind for sitting. Specifically spots in the woods where the trees are more spaced...providing decent sighlines..... Spots I sit for deer.... No decent clearings I've found thus far.... Also have full set of camo head to toe including face and gloves. I'm thinking I may grab a single hen decoy for sighting purposes... Currently scanning Google earth for clearings on state land.

This just got me all hot and bothered to go try some scouting

Alright so.. I got my Matthews switchback into a local shop and had my whisker biscuit and older cobra 5 pin lighted sight mounted. I just scored a new can in the correct draw length on eBay. So she's finally starting to come together. Couple questions for the collective. 1) I'm looking for an entry level but reliable release. Any brands I should stay away from? 2) cost for a half dozen finished arrows? Ballpark. 3) any NyS specific arrows regs I need to know? Any shafts or heads or veins I should stay away from? Thanks all. Again I am looking for good sturdy entry level budget friendly recommendations. If I had money to blow I would have bought a new bow.

Whoooooo buddy... I drive by there on my way to parents house on Sunday. Saw a bunch of trucks in the drive. Way more than I've ever seen there growing up. Looks like I got a stop to make this weekend.
-
Thanks all.... Do they have a range?
-
Well nvm... Should have watched the initial video... He's intense
-
Hoping maybe some locals are on here and can point me towards a good local shop for some work...
-
I was thinking the switchback as well based on reviews... Either compound bow will require a new cam and string and fitting.. So I'm looking at 100-150 to fit either compound bow either way

And there's more to come...... I also just got a PSE spyder 50lb pull... As well as a Hoyt game hunter 2 recurve. And another PSE camp hunter(model unknown). Possibly another bow or 2 as well.... Ideally I'd like to pull 3 usable setups out of this.. The Hoyt. Either the PSE or Mathews hunter and possibly a 3rd. Setup for when my girls get older. Good news is I located a camo whisker biscuit and fiber sight. I'm thinking from the PSE or Matthews. If u had the choice which one would u sink money into. Strictly for hunting? Should I bring all these to a shop or try and piece meal them o. a forum/craigslist / eBay?
-
Thanks for all the help guys. It looks like he has a whisker biscuit and a fiber pin sight for the bow..... Well see what happens and I'll update accordingl
-
Yeah its a switchback 50. Awesome reviews across the net... There's a Matthews dealer near me in Chadwick's... (Utica/rome area) I'll be giving him a call at some point to try and source a can if I can't find one on big auction site
-
Coincidently one of the other bows is a PSE... But in the long run I may end up selling it all and getting something fit to me and ready to go
-
I'm 6'4. He's about 5'5.. The draw literally is about 6-8 inches from my nose.... ... We are talking a bow set for a short 80 yr old man here...... So apparently I'll need a new cam. As well. Good to know... He's got a. Couple other bows I'll end up with.. One is a "1000$ " competition bow" so he says... He traveled all over the country shooting.... I'm hoping to keep 2 of the bows and make them serviceable and sell the rest.... Based on the responses it seems I was a little optimistic in the cost associated with refitting the bow to fit me and get it ready for the season..... Just may end up fitting the old whitetail hunter as the draw length is correct. I'm headed up there this weekend to see if he has some sights laying around... In the meantime I'll start looking into the recam. Thanks for the advice guys.. I was thinking I just needed the accessories and a restring to fit me.
-
Matthews solocam 50lb. First off I'm ecstatic as I was going to be returning an old 70s bear whitetail hunter. 2nd.... I need some advice ..... I know I need to get it restrung as its set up for a guy 2 feet shorter than me... I'll in need a peep and release hook installed. What's a ballpark price that should run me? Toss the stabilizer rod in favor of a shorty? Is the arrow rest decent enough to keep on it? Or go full on whisker biscuit?
-
Well if you search "bent gun barrel" there are a lot of results... I read probably 50 various sites before posting here.. Seems shotguns are more common either due to the fact that shotguns in general are more common or due to to the thinner barrel walls offering less integrity
-
So I had the wife check it too... Without me even saying thing she saw it too... Guy will take the return and refund the money... Which works out I guess... Now I'm back to square one.. Trying decide if I get a new barrel. Or have my old shorty in the shop for rifle sights and a turkey choke
-
Just a mossy 500. Shame as the barrel is in. Primo shape and accu choked
-
Its for turkey and clays.... The bend really is slight... I'm going to have my wife sight it as well to see if she sees the same..
-
So I score a nice 28inch vent rib on eBay.. I just got it in the mail and threw it on and to my dismay it appears to be bent to the left slightly near the center bead... Looking down it ignoring the beads u can see the curve. As well as putting it on a straight edge (the rib) leave the tip about an 1/8th of an inch off the edge. So send it back or is this a cheap fix?

My GPS is my phone! There's an app called back country navigator and it runs on straight GPS.. Has waypoints and route making... Can download topos to the phone and then shut off the WiFi and run on just GPs.. I use this for backpacking in the adks as well... Can get about 3 days out of the phone in this manner... Only using the GPS itself sparing.... *****_ as far as the winter movement is concerned. I was expecting the patterns to be different. How ever what I saw. Matches fairly well with what I saw during gun season considering movement.. The deer moving along the floor between 2 large ridges and moving its length. One end is very swampy as is the other end... The winter scout is more more getting movement pattern data period... As well as mapping the paths and land to allow for more still hunting / finding new spots... By mapping now and getting some pattern data. Can then spend the summer and fall simply sitting to get new movement data and cross reference that against the winter data. Only about 5 -6 inches tops.. Just enough to disguise small limbs and uneven terrain.
