  1. Went out to my stand this morning, hoping to see the big guy today but managed to get the momma of the button buck I shot on opening day... I have pictures of her with 2 button bucks, I shot 1 opening day and the other one was with her today. He didn't know what to do after I shot her. He just kinda stood there and walked in a circle 10 yards from my stand and after a few more minutes took off. I'll let him grow for a couple years... This makes 3 for me this year.
  2. yes i do believe that he probably beds in the adjacent field, as i found lots sign of bedding and jump deer in that field a number of times in the morning. there is a thick tree line that separates the two fields. so its kinda hard to see them but you can hear them take off...
  3. Behind my house is a small "field" i guess you could call it. Then a dirt berm divides it from the larger 15 acre field behind. At the corner of the small field is where i walk by the base of the berm to get back to the other field. The deer also use this access as well. I have only seen deer in the small field behind my house twice in the year and a half i have lived here. However the heavily trampled deer trail leads my to assume they are out there in the dark. A few days ago on my way back to the house from my stand this caught my eye. These photos are literally 90 yard from my back door. I have pictures of two big bucks, but one i know has been hanging around because i got within 50 yard of him chasing three does on the large field on the last day of bow season, and then got a picture of him right in front of my stand the monday after gun opener. The photos are of fresh rub activity, one has my house in it to show how close it is an the last is of the beaten path.
  4. Got this button head around 3:30pm. I wasn't paying attention just looking down and my gun. The squirrels were running all around me and when I looked up, it wasn't squirrels making noise it was this guy walking right to me. I thought it was a doe until I walked up to it. I shot him the exact same spot that I got my deer in bow season a couple weeks ago. Meat for the freezer! Still got some big boys out there hopefully.
  5. this guy looks messed up. like he's been shot or something, high on his shoulder.
  6. My freind that I got with has been bow hunting for 7 or 8 years and has missed lots of deer. He finally got his first deer with a bow this year and miss another last weekend. I also have missed 3 times this year, made a bad hit last weekend(which I feel horrible about) and finally hit one this past Wednesday. So hang in thier. I know it can be frustrating. Shooting at a living deer is not the same as a target. I know targets don't get my heart pounding. lol
  7. Ya I wish I would have seen him yesterday morning before I shot my small buck. I would love to have that guy on the wall.
  8. here are my latest pics. these guy only seem to come around when i make the trip down to the southern tier.
  9. Since I have been laid off for some time I have been going out a lot. I was getting very frustrated not seeing deer while in the stand but having pictures of nice deer while not there. Well that ended today. I had perfect wind today and it brought me this 4 point. I actually shot over him at 12 yards and he didn't even flinch. So I quick got another arrow and punched one threw him at 18 yards. i hit a twig or something because it hit him back in the trendier loin area. His side turned red in a second and he stumbled 10 yards and fell over. I don't know what I hit back there but I'm grateful I didn't have far to go to recover him. I use Rage broadheads. This is my second year bow hunting and my second deer/buck taken with a bow.
  10. This past weekend I went hunting with my friend in the southern tier. I sat in the same stand I have for the previous two year that I have killed deer from. Saturday we had a 4 point fork buck present himself but I was unsure of the distance so I never let the arrow fly, ended up been about 40 yards. He came back a half hour later behind my friend and he managed to get a shot off. To his disappointment he used the wrong pin and shot over his back. Sunday morning the same guy came in on the path. Only this time I was ready. He stepped out and turned his tail to me. Took 2 steps away the gave me a nice quarting away shot. I took it. I heard the arrow hit the deer. But didn't see where. Still sitting in the stand I can see my arrow sticking out of the dirt straight up and down 10 yard away from where I shot, only my white fletching still looks white. I got down to check my arrow, the front 3/4 of the shaft were covered in fat and the rest had blood and chunks of fat on one side. Also there was a large pile of white hair. I knew this was not ideal. My friend and I speculated that from the angle I went in the vitals and exited the chest. We did not hear it run that far. We went in the direction it took off in. 25 yard from the shot a red line of blood lay on the ground. With the amount of blood we thought for sure he was within 100 yard or less dead. We followed that line of blood for almost 80 yards to the base of a hill then the blood got sparse. then to our dismay we followed the trail up that hill and found where the deer had laid down. We must have jumped it. I was pissed that we had been excited and only waited a half hour to pursue the deer. We backed out and went back to where we hunt and my friend hung another stand for upcoming gun season. Now three hours after I took the shot we went back to the last blood and started tracking again, only now the light layer of snow on the hill top had started to melt, making this task even more difficult. After the deer got up from where it had bed down the blood trail change to a spray pattern for more than 100 yards. Then changed to small drips for another 60 yard then large drops going back down the other side of the hill. Then it jumped diwn onto a 4 wheeler trail and there where 2 large drops and 2 feet away one small drop. Then 20 feet away a tiny drop then another 20 feet another tiny drop. Then from the blood and some tracks we could tell it went down into some thick stuff. My buddy found one more tiny drop 40 feet from the last and that was it no more trail. We searched in that thick stuff and found nothing. Now disgusted with myself I was very upset to have made a bad shot on this deer and have to leave it for dead. Since we covered close to 700 yards tracking this deer over three hours my friend believes that I must have just hit this deer in the belly area and that it is still alive. Well now after that long unhappy story it's time for the redemption! It's now Wednesday morning and I'm back home. I check the wind forecast last night and it was good for my stand behind my house. Got up and got to my stand at 6:30. 7:05am I got a nice 4 point. It was kinda bad shot. I think I hit a twig. It was back far. But I immediately saw his side gush red. He went maybe 20 yards and fell over. I could still here him breathing so I stayed quiet for a while. While sitting there wait for him to die, at 8:30 five more deer came in on me. The ones I could see were does. I thought about filling my doe tag too but they spotted me going for my bow and took off. At least I got my buck and meat for the freezer.
  11. this is actualy one of the main reasons i moved out of erie county and bought a house in niagara county. I think it took 5 week after submitting my application until i had my permit in hand.
  12. This is a good reminder for those who have not taken a deer yet. I remember taking my first deer 2 years ago and luckily my experienced friends were with me. I didn't have a knife. I didn't have a pen. I didn't have anything to attach the tag to the deer. I didn't have any thing to drag the deer with. I was not prepared. Now I make sure I got a pen that works. Small zip ties for attaching the tag. my sharp folding buck knife for gutting. Some gutting glove to stay clean and mostly mess free. A drag rope. I also have flagging tape for marking the blood trail if there is not a lot of blood. that way I can go back to the last blood found if need be.
  13. this actually happened to my friend two weeks ago. I was 50 yards away from him in another stand and was watching the deer coming to us. they got to the opening looked at me and went right to his stand. and literally stood 5 yards in front of him and looked up at him. Thats when I looked at him and saw he didn't have his bow in his hand... but his phone! He said he heard a twig snap, looked down and saw the 4 deer standing right in front of him. He managed to put his phone in his pocket, and grab his bow as the deer started to walk by. He contorted around the tree and managed to shoot one of the large doe, getting his First bow kill ever.
