[Heckling the President]

I have always taken great pride as an American, that our leaders didnt stoop to the level of so many other countries...treating each other with respect, and maintaining our nations dignity. Politics is politics, but there is no place for the trash behavior that has become common place.  I am a registered Republican...but I am embarrassed by my parties behavior. That is the view of us the world gets, including a percieved lack of unity. Remember when Reagan came into office? there was a huge gap between parties then, but Ronnie pulled us together as a nation, despite different beliefs. Even the democrats....maybe not liking his politics, but could respect the man. I am no fan of Bidens. But he is our duly elected president, and our best show of support is to show respect. It doesnt help that easy access to our electronic media allows every ignorant ... a soap box, while most of the more intelligent folks simply know it is better to keep quiet.

Not to side bar the original thread, but what have you always craved after being in the backwoods/ away from home, etc. for a week? We are always craving 1) milk, 2) a good salad, 3) Pizza.

Venison cutlets seared rare, Silver queen corn on the cob...steamed...STEAMED DAMMIT no more than 4 minutes, Columbus bakery flat bread still warm from the oven, two lobster tails broiled, a dozen raw Chesapeake bay oysters with just a touch of lemon, fresh cucumber and onion in sour cream/malted vinegar dressing. Two Bass ales in frosted glass (fresh frosted glass for each,) with two Guiness following. Finish with double Woodford Reserve bourbon neat....

Looks like it has good weight, but definetly something going on. I would err on caution and avoid having any feed/food, etc. that would attract deer to minimize contact with them.

Dinosaur can ...and likely will be crazy. No reservations. For someplace a bit more mellow, down in armory square (actually just strait up the road a few blocks,) Kitty Hoynes is our favorite regular spot. Irish bar, more mature, probably the best bar food/light meals and casual dining down town. Best time to hit Dinosaur is weekdays/evenings.

[Hunting after Cataract Surgery]

Never had it done, but involved with quite a few patients and family members who did....

To reduce risk of complications stack everything in your favor. First, if you smoke / use nicotine, quit. As a vasoconstrictor, your eyes suffer, and especially after surgery they need all the health they can get. After that, ask you doc about recommendations for shooting afterward, and follow them. Most folks after surgery have an astounding improvement. My wife has worn glasses for at least forty years. Now she only needs them occaissionally, usually for reading and office work. Your eyes can also retrain themselves to a certain extent, and what works for someone else may not work at all for you.

[1911]

For about thirty years I had craved a 1911, and a few years ago finally made the plunge. Must haves...minimal "combat" customization...I love the plane jane GI issue...but sights stink. Steel. Colt. The original. Must have a pony on it. In my opinion they have been the original manufacturer of the 1911 since...1911, they have the most experience, I did not want a "Johnny Come Lately". The Colt Competition stayed true to the original lines pretty much, with some internal modernization including competition trigger and sights. The girly blue grips didnt last 1/2 an hour at home. Due to reloading / ammo supplies, I havent shot it as much as I wish I had, but I have around 700 rounds through it with out a single failure. Mine was about 900.oo. Sure  you can find a plane jane Phillipine 1911 that will go "bang" for around five hundred, but are you going to get an evil smile on your face every time you look at it like I do with the real Mccoy?

I was delighted to find a signed first edition of Fred Bears Field Notes, for ten bucks! Great out door stories from his career. Even though strictly an archer, anyone can appreciate the hunts/adventures he had.

I read it last winter. Very interesting read, but I got a bit tired of his..."style" after a while. I loved his show and regret his end, but probably would not have enjoyed his company.

ATbuckhunter, there is no reason whatsoever to recommend one over the other than my being a huge Mauser fan and I could never afford the M8 or a modern produced 98. If you liked one of the three offered rounds you might just be able to save a chunk of cash over the Sauer is all.

The Sauer 100 is the same base rifle as the Mauser m18 (which I bought last year). The Mauser is actually made by Sauer and is off the same production line. I am a lifetime Mauser 98 fan and love my 8x57, but also have long shot and loved the .308.  Thus I ended up with the M18. Wonderfully accurate, the best trigger pull I have used (most all the rest of mine are upgraded to at least a Timney target trigger), I love the removable magazine. I found mine for less than half the recommended selling price. Look around, take your time. the 7mm is not as common so probably commands a higher price. I would suggest you try to find the Mauser . As I recall it was only available in .308, 30-06 and .270. Certainly .270 would be a fine 2nd fiddle to the 06, but of course cant carry the same high end bullet weights.

I have been quite lucky to have spent a fair bit of time in bear camps (Quebec, New Brunswick, Newfoundland). Never once have I seen a .243. Guides like big...and love 12 gauge slugs for bears.  Bears are not hard to kill, but they are very heavy boned and the fat absorbs alot of energy and closes up wounds. Bigger is better. Comparing the 7mm-08 to a .243 is ....no comparison. The .243 is very popular in southern states because the deer run much smaller. There are folks who use it in the north and do fine and brag it up...watch the responses to this reply...but anyone I ever met who shot a .243 had never shot anything else to compare. You want a fat heavy bullet for the most energy if you are buying a rifle thinking of bear.

It wouldnt be one property. I would find a nice property on the St. Lawrence River (1000 Island region) primarily for fishing and family use. I would find a property in the northern tier, perhaps Tug Hill region, perhaps the borders of the ADKs that allowed plenty of elbow room for day ventures and quality big woods hunting. Lastly I would have a property probably in the southern finger lakes region where I could make use of the late season ML hunting as well as easy access to Cayuga and Seneca lakes. I would certainly consider a lease in the FL region. Then.... depending on the size of the lotto...I would find a place in Newfoundland in the northern peninsula. Moose, Caribou.

 I always kind of liked her, can disregard her politics personally but could care about her show. That said, Heck, she is Jewish, so I think any opinion she wants to offer on the subject is fair and honest, but certainly not antisemetic for gods sake., but I do kind of get what she was trying to say but am totally fine with her apology.

[Adirondack Deer Hunting help]

 

I would recommend getting out during the early NT muzzleloading season. Woods are pretty thin then. That aside, the public lands I frequented in the eighties and nineties are empty now. Dog gone few hunters any more. This is primarily the game management areas of Oswego and Jefferson County. Likely, other areas are similar. The closer to cities of course, the more they are used. Nothing wrong with inquiring with the State Forest Rangers and DEC officers for recommendations of lightly used land
