The saddest part is that Dicks started out as a hunting/fishing store (in Binghamton NY if I remember correctly?). When they opened in Cicero NY, fishing and hunting were still their main stay.

You have permission, you are ahead of the game, but we seldom can change peoples long term thoughts....but you can head them off. An offer to post the property at the access sites? Put a camera up or two to help their security and peace of mind? My property borders state land and a neighbors. Both propertys are posted. The previous owner we were both happy to allow the other to wander/hunt on the property if no one was there (easy to see if cars are present). When asked, the current owner was very politely hesitant to agree to the same (to my dismay....his nearest corner is a great funnel area). I could see he was uncomfortable with me asking. I quickly stated, " You and I both have our own camps for the same reason. We want to know who is on them. No problem. Smiles returned, good relations maintained. And I honor that.

If the critters dont keep up with the news, I doubt they will notice anything. We have cloudy days...alot.

Anything for heart is good. Tongue is just a big muscle. You slice off the outer skin, then just drop it in the pot with pickling spice, vinegar and water per the recipe and simmer away. If not pickled, it just tastes like beef.

We usually use perch minnows....but get just as many with a little gob of worm. When the weather is real cold we used to use an ice dot with mousie grubs on them, tied above a minnow.

RCBS used to be a very easy to deal with company....I havent needed to do so in a few years, but I would give customer service a call and ask them if it was supposed to come with both (does it say on the box?) . Yep, small press for small primers, large for large. Put a dab of vaseline on the hinge point for lube...it will bind and break eventually without it.

I wont be out for trout, but i sure hope to get out for perch over the next couple weeks.

I do not like Roundup....but it works good on poison ivy. Every other year or so I have to attack it, creeping into my yard from the neighbors or the woods behind me.

We used to love to go to Sampson state park on Seneca, and fish off the wall for northerns and trout. I was really hoping to get there this year, but havent due to way too much work prepping our house for sale.

A few years ago outside of Watertown, I was admiring a 1930s vintage HD that was parked outside a hardware store. It was very much a "rat", but totally brought into riding condition, safely and legally. While I was admiring it, an old salt walked out of the store...the owner. He was happy to share the bikes history. He bought it as a basket case in the sixties, went overseas and forgot about it. He rediscovered it about ten years ago, and with some friends help got it running (one kick start!). He researched the bike to discover it was sold to the City of Watertown Police department...and was even able to identify the officer it was issued to. Even cooler, he has a great photo of the officer on the bike escorting President Roosevelt when he visited Watertown in the thirties!

Oh my! That Indian is a jewel! I cant blame him for not wanting to part with it....but even in the condition it is in, ....it is worth a fortune! A true restoration would probably set them back a mortgage. I wonder if the motor is a total loss oil system? (pretty sure that is what it is called...basically uses a trickle oil feed for lubrication).

Me thinking simply a mild winter, deer herding up around food, but several mild winters in a row will certainly help the population...until the next real winter wipes them out due to overpopulation.

For many years my favorite woods carry along was a petite little .22 Erma Excam semi, a PPK knock off. It was reliable, and I practiced with it alot. Due to it being so easy to carry, reliability and appropriate accuracy, it was my primary concealed carry for decades. But I literally wore it out to the point of it going burst fire on me! Oh well, it was gracefully retired. A few years back I picked up a Harrington and Richardson Sportsman with a 3" barrel. It is about the same size as the Erma and I actually carry it in the same holster. It is reliable, but so small it takes a carefull grip. It is appropriately accurate, and I now carry it frequently when woods bumming, I am not one to worry about who or what I will bump in to. I am out there enough that I know what is, and it aint...squat (or squatch), and any two legged concerns I will see and avoid long before I see them. For years I craved a Smith kit gun...but they go for a fortune.

49 bucks at Dicks. In the woods by 5:30, we screwed our pegs in the tree as high as we dared, then wrapped the "climbing sling" around the tree to hang from as we pulled the Lock On up and strapped it in place. I can remember a couple times ...rather than risk the damn pegs getting down, I just hung from the platform and dropped!.

You never ducked any slugs from the barrages then....I did.

A tree stand was a 2x 4 nailed in a tree crotch.... A box of 5 pumpkin balls cost 2.25. Winter gear was a pair of "thermal" cotton long underwear under two pairs of tight jeans. A successful year we SAW a buck. Surplus rifles (Mausers, Enfields, Carcanos, Lee Enfields, Krag Jorgensons......and single barreld shotguns way outnumbered Remingtons, Winchesters , Marlins, etc. But...I do not miss...opening day southern tier :"barrages" at first light. tree to tree hunters on lots of public land. Idiots emptying thier guns at "tails".

Dad and many of his and earlier generation were much more social hunters....They liked being outdoors and getting together with their friends, but were not any where near as avid as many (but fewer) hunters are today. I had the bug from an early age. I am amazed by the other hunters I know who have never taken thier kids out. But they probably spend more time with their kids doing other things...soccer, baseball, etc.

NY has some of the longest hunting seasons in the country, and absolute gobs of public access for hunting. That doesnt even bring in that you cant throw a rock without hitting fishable waters. Politics aside, I dont think it has any bearing on hunting parents getting their kids /friends kids, whoever, out in the woods. The barrier is the parents ...my generation and my sons, who have moved from being a participant in sports to a spectator. Hunters...recreational hunters, do not have any difficulty obtaining legal hunting arms or ammunition in reasonable quantities for hunting. Avid target shooters, competitors, etc. feel the sting with limited supply much more.

And for not being able to edit my previous note...from a very young age, my son DID acompany me on woods walks, weiner roasts, fishing, squirrel hunts, camping, canoe trips, etc. Happily, he loves fishing still, which we share together, but hunting didnt sync with him. And that is ok.

Constant stimulus from I phones/games, etc., parents spending less time with kids. I am amazed by my very avid hunter friends, none of who ever brought their kids hunting. I ask why ? I got the same answer....I dont want to force it on them! WTF? From a very early age I took delight in accompanying my dad on walks in the woods, fishing (even if my pole was just an old piece of TV antenae), camping, etc. Nothing was ever forced on me, I wanted to spend time with dad...and happily, vice versa. Folks think of family time as just staring at a screen.
