  1. In for a PM sit at my fall plot. This stand is really a gun stand but I’ve had such routine pics at night within bow range I figured I’d give it a go. At the very least it’s a nice observational sit as I can see most of the orchard.

It’s way warmer than I thought facing west with the sun and I could have easily 2 layers less on me, but maybe that’ll pay off after 6.

    Beats work!

I don't disagree with that. But in terms of vocalizations as I have heard and seen it play out, a snort wheeze is just as or more likely in my experience to be from a middle-age buck than a fully mature one.

I've only heard the clicking a handful of times and the same with the roar/growl - think four times I can recall. It's been a 4.5+ buck IMO each time. For me, it's been in thick cover and the older buck is tending a ready-now doe. All but one of the occasions there were satellite bucks going around the two of them. Come to think of it, I've heard snort wheezing more in the open areas than in thick cover.

I guess my point is, you hear clicking or growling, you're in the game.

I'll also add, I think we're at a disadvantage of being in the NE US with ratios more heavily weighted to does. Even going to Ohio, vocalizations are more pronounced and more part of the hunting. Missouri - even more. I was surprised at how much vocalization I've heard in Missouri. I heard a grunt sequence the first year and I thought for sure a hunter was in there making some bad decisions, lol. Nope, that was a buck doing his thing in cover.

yeah we're not disagreeing on anything. I just meant that for most of us a snort wheeze from a 3.5 still means game time haha

  3. i use a very low power clip on headlamp for walking in and out and typically the green setting. I do carry a much brighter one in my pack for recovery if needed. I use a headlamp for just about everything at home too, much more convenient than holding a light.

Shot-wise, the grunt/gurgle from a buck at impact. Much more confidence inspiring that the diaphragm thud/pop even though both are fatal.

I always thought snort wheezes were cool and I went a long time before hearing them or maybe even knowing what they were, but I've heard and seen them from enough mid-age bucks to not be ready to crawl out of my skin, despite it still being cool to hear. Older bucks will do it too, but I think I've seen 3.5s do it more than older bucks. I think it gets the "press" nowadays.

For me - it'd be long, tending grunts following by clicking. That'll make the hair on the back of your neck stick up. That and the "growl/roar" are right up there with mature, older bucks. I've only ever heard them a handful of times. When I hear it now, and know what it is, I get an adrenaline dump immediately. My 2020 Missouri buck was that way - heard him a solid 30 seconds before I saw him. Knew I was letting one go if presented even before seeing him.

I know that a 3.5 isn't technically mature, but 98% of hunters will call that a shooter buck haha.

Good lord that's hard to choose..

A snort wheeze is something that I've only seen mature deer make, so I think I'd have to go with that.

Not saying younger bucks don't snort wheeze, just need seen one snort wheeze.

I've only heard/witnessed it once in 20+ years and he was a very, very big buck

Really, so a bang on neighbors probably just after you seen a slammer heading that direction is your favorite sound.. lol.

Just busting.  I know what you meant.

haha yeah. Sometimes a bang if it's not me makes me cry inside.

Well I'm back home empty handed.walked my ass off today that's for sure.had 2 guys and 1 dog show up this morning then the 2ndd guy came back and brought his dog(different from first).walked another hour and a half with no luck and no buck seen.honestly if we bumped him again we probably wouldn't have seen him, holy crap it was thick my arms are all torn up.looks like I'm chalking this one up as a loss.hope he makes it but if not the fox and yotes will have a feast.this blows

It's the part of this sport that sucks the most. You did more than most, and there isn't a hunter on this board who hasn't lost one. And if you quote me and say that you haven't, you're either lying or haven't hunted long enough.

Watch for crows, if you have guts, I hate to say it but he will be dead eventually.

It's not for lack of trying! I remember how frustrating it was when I was taking my daughter out for youth season. You feel a lot of pressure to put them on a deer, so they stay interested in hunting, and it sucks when it doesn't happen. Stay positive and make the time you spend in the blind together as enjoyable as you can, deer or no deer. Funny, it reminds me of a time when I was in a blind with my daughter. We were having some laughs and she said, "Dad, some girls bond with their Dad over sports, but we bond over hunting." I will never forget that!

I've taken my boys out multiple times for deer and turkey just to hang with me and we've never seen a thing. They have all told me that they cherish the time with dad to talk, and that's all that ever matter to me. But yeah I can see how the pressure changes when they have the gun in their hands.

Have several cams out all around the property, but haven't had a shooter on cam, for about 10 days now... Not very encouraging. Trying to be optimistic that they'll come...

seems to always be the story this time of year, I wouldn't worry. I'm still seeing them in some spots, but it's 10pm or 4am. That will change soon.

  9. People laugh but I’m friends with a lot of deputies and they call me every time they gotta shoot one. I get 20-30lbs of em on average and the backstraps are always fine. I also never gut them.

Found a real nice fresh buck last year, was nothing to do just the back straps and they were delicious. Makes me feel better that an animal doesn’t just lose its life for nothing.

Seems like you have a good spot, but I’d be cautious to overhunt early if you’re after a mature buck.

    Sincerely, unsolicited advice haha

  11. I’m a little disappointed in myself for giving in the alarm clock this morning, but the wife kept me up a little later than planned… although I’m not complaining.

Action at just about every stand this morning but nothing with a horn. I’d shoot a doe so I guess I may have missed an opportunity but it’s a long 2 days of kids football games and being tired didn’t appeal either.

Congrats and good luck to those out

I think we can all agree that our guns should be secured from kids.

exactly, we're all saying the same thing. suicide or accident, if you have kids at home and honestly even if you don't because people do get robbed, lock up your f'n guns.

Just don't parade around to the world that most of our kids die from the loaded glock in the sock drawer and I'll support your message.

I have plenty of deer on the walls for any of my kids parents to assume I own guns, I've never been asked but wouldn't have an issue if someone did ask either. It would be a slight bruise to my ego though as that might imply they may think I'm an irresponsible parent, but again I wouldn't be bothered or triggered if they did.

Guys finishing off deer with hockey sticks, mag lites, knives and choke holds. You owe the deer better . A .22 in the ear , no visible wound, and quick finish  , stick gun back in boot and carry on . Post for entertainment purposes only .

silly laws aside, you're not wrong though. It's a reminder that ethics and laws don't always intersect.

Never going to stuff this genie back in a bottle; its too good of a campaign slogan to be tough on guns, fits the current narrative.

The timing of this would have been better in maybe a week or so though. She's not going to lose the election, but saying your tough on guns when your rushed through unconstitutional laws are rescinded doesn't hold a lot of water. Honestly the people of Rochester would probably rather hear how you're helping them with all the murders. They're not naïve enough to think your gun laws will even scratch the surface of that problem, and they are smart enough to know that your bail reform laws aren't helping.
