I wouldn’t be so sure. How many times do we all hunt and see nice bucks and they aren’t on camera that particular day?

sure plenty of deer not in camera range. But with 7 cams out covering major runs and food sources, you can get a general feel. I by no means meant to imply there was zero activity, just not what I saw early in the year.

  2. Sitting in the airport bar and checking cell cams. Looks like haven’t missed anything in this heat. Big boys still active at night, but bachelor groups are long gone. Big boy with a lone doe at 10pm was interesting.

I’m dying that I’ll be gone again tu-fr next week. Have the whole week off after that, but that first week… damn.

Edit, just as I posted this one of my tweener 8 points showed up. The buck you don’t want to see haha.

  3. I realized that after.  I think I could have saved the meat if I hadn't backed out.  Spent many years training myself not to push deer. Probably tracked over 100 for me and my buddies growing up.
I don't even know any real predator hunters back home. There are some near me.  I live about 5 miles southeast of Fiddlehead brewery. But that's over an hour from Central VT.  Sucks, cuz now I don't dare bowhunt that spot.

You did the right thing by the book. Just bad luck man. Sucks.

  4. There's no rut in the summer.  But I do agree, somewhat.
A doe can't shut things off and wait a couple days because it's warm out. She going to be pestered and chased.
It's more about me not liking hunting in warmer weather this time of year, then about wether or not the bucks will be moving, because they will, regardless of the warmer temps.

I guess my point is that 70’s are summer like weather and they’re not going to be as active in the heat. When I lived down south I would run at dusk to avoid the heat. Deer will breed at night to do the same.

If the sun is out, you’re going to need some cheap sunglasses.    So go on out and get some cheap sunglasses……

my father in law is an eye doctor and he'd tell you that cheap non-polarized sunglasses can actually be harmful to some degree. But some here would say that's not true and a $5 pair from a gas station is just as good as polarized $130 raybans.

    Oh I agree.

They are going to rut regardless of the temps. Happens every year within a day or two. I've got several spots that are pushing the comfort zone as far as being close to or in the fringe of bedding areas. Haven't touched those yet. This weekend on we'll see the activity increase.  Just hate swatting mosquitos while deer hunting, lol

sure but think about physical activity in the summer. They will rut more at night if it's hot out too.

Shot a doe this morning.  30 yards. Slightly quartering.  Shot looked, sounded good. Waited 25 minutes and got down. Couldn't find blood right away, but I saw where she left the overgrown pasture and went into the woods. Headed that way and it sounded like a herd of deer took off.  I was confident in the shot.  Found fantastic blood in the woods.  40 yards later I found a huge pool of blood and then a bloody bed.  I didn't think I had kicked her up, but thought I chose to play it safe and backed out.  My buddy came over to hang out and catch up.  We went back in an hour and a half later.  Blood trail was sparse, but pretty easy to follow.

Coyotes beat me to her.  Tore up both hind quarters, ate the liver and tore the stomach apart.  I think backing out was the smart move, but it may have cost me the deer in the end.  She ran another 100+ yards, more or less dead on her feet and dropped.  No sign of a struggle.  Entrance was 5" behind the shoulder and half way up.  Exit was lower and 3 or 4 ribs from the back of the ribcage.  Mad I lost the deer, but can't really say what I should have done differently.  Ravens were having a field day carrying away meat and fat.

Between work and weather I probably won't get out until next weekend. I have permission on 120 acres in that area, but I won't hunt it with a bow again.

    Congrats to everyone who scored.

you lost a deer to yotes in 90 minutes? Holy shit man... that sucks. Sounds like you need to call a trapper...

  8. I used to try to pin it down but I started to feel it happens at the same time every year.
being on this forum for a few years helped me with this thought. If you look historically the ny harvests thread seems to be most active november 5-15, with most of them 7-11. So I no longer see a better time. I have however seen breeding behavior from 10/25 til January, and sometimes  the weather influences the sightings durring rut but I don't see it later or earlier anymore. Dec 1-5 can be pretty interesting also in low presure areas.

I agree. I’m a believer in the daylight theory. But the chase phase starting around Halloween is fun. Hunting food early is also fun.

Seeing only doe and very small bucks in this heat doesn’t surprise me at all. Most hunters would do better to maybe give the woods a break. However if your time is limited, do what you need to do.

I will traveling for the 2nd of 3 weeks in a row this week and that helps me stay away a little, but man missing 4 days the first week of November will be tough.

Late October has been good to me as well the last few years but only on cooler days or early morning.

  9. Ain't no flies on the 30-30, out to 150 yards or so...However there are are probably 50  +other chamberings that you could say that about...The  main appeal of the 30-30 is the  light, fast handling little carbines that it is usually chambered in..

I agree. Great gun for drives, long hikes/hunts. If I’m taking a short hike to a treestand or blind, I’m opting for a larger gun that has the advantages of more distance and knockdown power.

All that said it’s a fine gun for whitetails for most NY situations.

  10. I respect this but I've passed 3x this year with the same situation. Now I would like to make meat.  No more passes on my end.  She's going to leave them very shortly anyway.

I think mistakes happen when your hearts not in it. And for the next 3 or so weeks she’s better bait than any food source.

But I wouldn’t fault anyone who didn’t pass. I’ve regretted passing sure freezer fillers in years past. You just never know.

  11. For me it’s a diagram of intersecting lines.

    There’s passion
The guy who gun hunts a weekend or 2 up to the freak who saves his entire vacation for the rut and obsesses all year long on land management.

    There’s means
    Dirt poor to Elon Musk

Those lines can intersect in multiple spots and I think we can all agree that any can be successful. I doubt many would turn down good quality stuff if it was free, but they’re also perfectly fine without it.

At the end of the day I think we would all agree that you don’t earn awards for hunting frugally and you don’t win awards for spending tons of money. You do you.

  12. Much warmer already than I thought. Also a little breezier than forecasted, but not the hurricane of last weekend. I guess it’s ok because I dropped my first glove of the year.

Bumped what I think was a single buck in the field it my east and what I think was 2 doe on the West. There’s a few field edge scrapes near my approach and wow. Smelled like some rookie hunter dumped a whole bottle of scrape mate lol. Still seems early for that.

Lone doe just came flying at me. She didn’t wind me or she would have gone the other way, not upwind. Have seen that script so I got up and ready and nothing following, not even a yote. Another week or 2 and there’s been a longer pursuit I think lol.

  13. An interesting end. So as most know, part of my spot is an orchard. A perk is that I almost always pick an apple to eat on the way in and out in early season. So today I ate most of one and tossed it as I got within about 20 yards of my stand. Now mind you where I tossed this there is a row of apple trees with apples on the ground.

So around 6:20, 2 doe came out downwind of me but not spooked and feed in front of me. They were smaller doe but not fawns. Some guys here would classify them as delicious and shooters, but not for bow for me so they got a pass. The one proceeded to finish off my mostly eaten apple it was funny to watch. Had another doe show up as light was fading too.

  14. Why? I feel like some times big bucks and turkeys travel together.. the turkeys enjoy the bucks nose and the buck enjoys the turkeys eye sight ?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

They do for sure. And turkeys will almost always bust you with their eyesight. Throw in a deers nose and ears and all those eyes and it’s tough to even stand, let alone draw.

  15. This undertone of if you do it in a way that’s not like me or in a way that is more earned or privileged than me means you cannot hunt or you’re lesser than me…is just weird. Almost like hunting can’t be fun if you’re not suffering.
Can you buy your way to big deer? Yep. I firmly believe that. Not my circus, not my monkeys, though.
Y’all have fun with this thread. Imma take my Sitka wearing, cell cam using, leasing, azz to the woods. This 7-8 year old bow is looking a little rough though. Might need to go buy a new one to show the boys wazzzup! LOL GTFO with that crap.

Shoot - forgot my plot, too! Don’t worry, no ozone was used.

Generally applies to everything in life. I get it with my car sometimes as from family about my house. No I never said and don’t think I’m better than you, but here you are bringing shit up to me like you wanna talk about it. Like leave me be and I’ll continue to leave you be.
