  1. Did it pass the sniff test?
  2. I gotta chime in as this is near and dear to my heart....... I had a huge Rio Grande Turkey full body mounted with the nitrogen frozen head that was an absolute monster. Shot him with my bow. Called my dad that night to share the story. Last time I got to share a story with my dad as he passed soon after. I was excited to get my bird back. Opened the crate and the damn bird had some 'jake' head on it. It was the saddest and maddest day of my life. Even though the bird is still an awesome mount, it's just not the same. I know that it's wrong. Everytime I see the bird, instead of having great memories, I am pissed that the head is wrong. The taxidermist got an earful and ended up agreeing to refund my money. If it's not right, it's not right. The true trophy is in the memories with your dad, but make sure the mount on the wall reflects what you want from the deer. Hunting is more than a mount, it's the memories and the time spent creating our heritage, and sharing the legacy of our elders. Enjoy your time with your Dad in the woods.... that's the true trophy!
  3. Congratulations....... you're now hooked. Thanks to your cousins for helping you get that first deer monkey off your back. A new hunter is officially born. Enjoy the adventure......... the story is what makes the dream.
  4. The best time to get to your stand is when you get there..... Actually in at dark and out after dark is the theory. I tend to get in my stand for the evening hunt aroudn noon. Grandpa always taught me that you can't kill a deer if you aren't out there trying. You'd be surprised how much you will see in the middle of the day. or not.....
  5. I'm up in Clifton Park. Got my first Whitetail buck this year in Wilton..... heading out this week with the muzzleloader. We'll be coyote calling mid days as there are way too many coyotes running the property. Hope to spotlight them too.....
  6. Sometimes it's stuff like this that puts a bad face to the rest of us. Sorry to hear that soemone did that..... lets just hope that the guy foudn the buck dead, already picked fromt eh coyotes and decided to capture the antlers..... Lets just hope. Good luck to your wife..... and to you.
  7. I'm region 5 too. hunt mainly in Wilton as I am new to the area. lookign for a good turkey hunting spot as well. any advise?
  8. Man Am I glad I found this forum. Great topics and good conversation amongst hunters. I moved here from Arizona. Never hunted whitetails before. Got a chance to hunt them this year with my bow this year. Getting ready to try the muzzleloader. Whitetails are totally different than Mule Deer and the Elk that I'm used to. I love the upstate New York area and am excited to learn more about hunting and all the great woods that are found around here. I absolutely love hunting Turkeys and predators as well. Ducks, Geese, Pheasants...... HELL I love hunting. I look forward to being an active member and am excited to learn from all those here.
