No luck not a drop of blood to be found ,lot of fat on big doe and by the tuft of hair it was a little back.  Problem with a close shot and small bullet , hole can plug a lot easier  especially if it didn't expand.   Shot was 30 yards.   At least with a larger caliber the holes are bigger.  2nd deer lost to a .243  both for same reason  lack of blood to trail  1st one was a nice buck dropped in tracks and when hunter was climbing down it got up  and took off not a drop of blood (  the hunter was a national shooting sports champ on cover after magazine several times so I'm sure shot was good.

Swamp and no blood makes poor tracking .

Maybe more of a bullet type issue vs caliber?

  2. My son bought 3 or 4 of the $30 Tasco cams at Walmart last year to use in "riskier" areas. I don't think he's had any issues. Pics certainly aren't as high quality as the more expensive cams, but so what.

He bought 2 and was mightily pizzed when neither one would take pictures.

I'm just going to throw something out there, that I have no explanation for. So I checked my son's Tascos a couple of times. I used the same SD card reader that I always do. It said there were no pics on a couple of the cards! OK, maybe just maybe I forgot to turn the cams on the last time or didn't have the switched completely on.?.? Checked the cams a few days later, but again, NO pics!! I told him the cams were junk and not taking pics. He didn't understand it, as he never had problems with them. He took the cards home and popped them in his SD card reader and PC and whalla!! All the pics showed up!! It was weird that I could see pics from a couple of his Tasco cams with my SD card reader, but others said there were no pics on the cards.? But he could see all of them with his SD card reader and PC.? I know this makes no sense! I guess what I'm wondering is if your friend's cams might have been taking pics, but they might not have been showing up with his SD card reader or PC.? Just something to consider or try...

  3. I'm planning on doing something similar with a cell cam for notification. So, it must be fairly effective? Need to do whatever I can to thin a few out. Don't have much success calling for some reason. Still brushing up on those skills! Would like to learn to trap them next year.

  4. Does anyone hunt coyotes over bait? I'm thinking of trying it this winter. Would be able to see the bait site from my house. (I have trail cam pics of coyotes in my yard pretty frequently.) Planning on starting the site with scraps from my buck and making a baitsicle once temps allow. Just ordered a red headlamp and a red light for a scope mount. Any tips or suggestions?

Whew finally dragged out and hung up. No record breaker, dressed 95 pounds. Saw 5 tonight, and the 4 I had in range she was the biggest. One shot went 50 yards and piled up. Snow makes for nice dragging! I also cut a very big lone track that walked in my tracks up top after I came in. That makes the freezer in better shape.

Congrats Fletch! She'll be a nice addition to the freezer, right next to that buck of yours! B)

catching up, congrats @Cabin Fever and even sweeter that you didn't have to work to drag him out. Solid 2.5 year old shooter and extra meat in the freezer.

    Salude!

Thanks Belo! It was close to my worst season ever, but the stars must have aligned just right yesterday or the deer hunting Gods must have decided to throw me a bone or something! LOL Regardless, I'll take it!!

Not sure what happened to my alarm this morning. So stayed home and did some laundry. Headed in now for afternoon watch. Few inches of snow on the ground.  Looking for a dumb one

TF, I'm going to muster up any good mojo I have and send it your way! You need some meat in the freezer!! If I thought there was any chance you could score at my place, I would invite you over! But, we both know how my season went.... it sucked!!

Are you seeing many tracks? By the looks of my cams for the past 3 weeks, 99% of the deer activity around here is at night. I can probably count the daytime pics on one hand!

Out again!? I would have freeking retired for the season if I was you.

Well, I got a video from this morning of a doe limping across the property. I would like to get a look at her and see if it's from a gun shot or maybe from being hit by a car and try to determine if she should be shot or if she will heal. I contacted the neighbor and he said he saw her the other night when she was crossing the road going into a field.
