  1. I have been a deer hunter for 40 years and a bow hunter for 6 going on 7 years. I have learned so much about deer since bowhunting, in particular about their movement. I know when you kick a deer out, he will run in any direction at first but will eventually turn into the wind and run.

One thing that I have noted is when a deer is moving naturally, not being pushed, more often then not they move with the wind. I had always thought deer moved into the wind so they could smell trouble ahead. If you think about it, it makes sense, when moving slowly a deer can smell a predator from behind and use their vision to see any predator ahead. Any one else notice this?

  2. Just wondering here... not really interested in your daily personal hygiene routine but ask because I seem to always shower down with a scent killer shampoo/soap before morning hunt but rarely before afternoon hunts. How about your thoughts?

PS: I also start to use a scent killer shampoo/soap about a month before the season starts each day, even if I don't go hunting.

  3. I have a chiropractor friend that wrote to the DEC about his thoughts on NY bow season and antler restriction.

    Southern Tier:

    A) First he suggested a longer bow season... say Sept 15 thru the Fri before gun season opens.

:) Everyone can take one buck and one doe per season which includes the entire deer season (bow, gun, muzzle).

    C) His thoughts are this: the doe fulfills the venison fix for meat hunters and it may make others seeking a buck to pass on the smaller bucks w/o placing a size limit on it, like "outside the ears" or "at least 3 points on one side".

I think this make some sense and it eliminates doe permits. Your thoughts?

  5. OK, as strange as this may sound... bring your IPOD. Particularly on days when we you can not hear well because of wind or rain. I know a guy who shot a nice buck while listening to "Freebird" 25 years ago on a Walkman tape.

Put on something mellow. Turn the volume all the way down and then just barely turn it on so you can just hear it. I've done this a few times. When you get the urge to get down from your stand and leave turn on the tunes for 30 - 45 minutes. As we all know, if your not on stand you can't see deer. Better to use your eyes to see than read a book or do a crossword puzzle IMO.

  6. The nice part is that both scrape sites are easily reached w/o much disturbance. My hope is that by doctoring the scrapes once a week, that by the time opening day comes around that the dominant buck is p*ssed off enough that he begins to check it a few times a day. I am hoping that opening day is a day he comes back to see if this "other" buck is around. I'm not concerned about the younger bucks being scared off. The one scrape site is about 50 yards down wind from where traditionally there have been other scrapes. We'll see.

  7. You're right... you have to want to quit regardless of the method you choose - it comes down to willpower!!! Play mind games with yourself... laugh at others that light. Internally say to yourself "ha ha not me"... "I ain't no slave to some weed"... "that's not gonna control my life"  Things like that are important in your willpower.

  8. I quit Aug 6, 1977 after 8 years and 1 & 1/2 packs per day. They were just 55 cents a pack. One of the best decisions I have ever made. I was only 23 years old but and I remember like yesterday.

It was a Sat night and I can still see the half-dozen, half-smoked butts in the ashtray. I remember that they just tasted terrible... that's why they were half smoked. I butted the last one out, crushed the pack and said "as of tommorrow I quit" and went to bed.

I got up Sunday morning and had a big breakfast and after went for a smoke. Then I remembered that I had quit. So I put an unopened pack in my shirt pocket and went around Sunday with an unopened pack. My thoughts were if I don't open it, I can't smoke them.

I went to work Monday with the pack in shirt pocket and continued that way all week. The next Saturday I gave the pack to my downstairs neighbor and never looked back. I played mind games with myself. Every time I would see somebody light up I would think to myself "not me".

I believe the best time to quit is when they taste like sh*t b/c that is what you will remember. Carry an unopened pack with you for 2 reasons: 1) you have no reason to go buy a pack. 2) you can't smoke them if you don't open them and 3) you have no reason to bum a smoke b/c you got your own. When the urge passes just throw the pack away and you are on your way.

  9. All right... made 2 small scrapes at my one stand and roughed up a small tree as a rub.  At the other stand about 200 yards up the ravine made another scrape and a rub. This is the stand where my 16 yo son will sit some. Put some preorbital on the overhanging branch and a little bit on the rub as well. A little dominant buck urine sprayed on the scrape and added a few drops of tarsal. Plan to dr. the sites once a week until the season and will hunt them opening day until 11am.

  10. I'm probably a sucker for this stuff but I am gonna try setting up a couple of Mock scrapes where I know other scrapes are generally found. I have watched a few vids on doing this and they usually include some preorbital scent on the over hang branch.

I will use some a little interdigital, a little tarsal and dominate buck urine on the scrape and the preorbital on the branch. I can certainly can see that whatever you can do to make a dominant buck believe he has an intruder will really make him check back daily to see if the other son of a b*tch is around.

I plan to dress this up once week until the season opens and then each time I hunt the stand dress it again.

  11. I see many of us talking about their broadheads. I think one of the most important points that is missing is the talk about proper arrow setup. I've read about people who swear by Rage 2 Blade and others who don't think they will penetrate bone. Others swear by Muzzy, G5 Montec (my choice), Snuffers, ect.

I never gave much thought to this until this year. I just bought good arrows, put on the 100 gr tips and shot. After a lot of research about arrow weight and proper Front of Center I completely changed my arrow setup.

I shoot a Mathews Drenalin at 60lbs and my 16 yo son shoots a PSE Chaos at 52 lbs. We were both shooting a 28" Beman MFX with a 100 gr tip. The total arrow weight was 405 gr with an FOC of about 8.5%

I have setup my arrows a little different. I added 50 gr of weight to the tip internally by inserting the HIT weight from the nock end with a little epoxy. If you order new arrows you should have these set up from the tip end initially.

This added just 50 gr to total arrow weight up to about 455 gr but moved by FOC to over 13%. I recently shot at a bow shoot with others drawing more weight but my arrows consistently penetrated deeper and were harder to pull out than the others. I had my sons new arrows set up like mind brand new and his arrows weigh 450 gr and his FOC is almost 14%. His arrows were penetrating about the same as the other guys pulling more weight.

You loose a few ft per sec but I believe the impact and kinetic energy is worth it, particularly when and if you hit bone.

    Your thoughts?

  12. I have always used a pendulum and tried a few over the years. The TG700 (pic) with a tritium pin or fiber. Been using this very pendulum single pin sight for a few years. Before I used a Trophy Ridge pendulum. They work well for me.

  13. I think they're great but like stated above... don't try and use them while the deer is coming in to you.  The way I like to do this to go to your stand(s) 6 weeks in advance, mid day. Measure and mark several trees at the max distance in your shooting lanes. I sight my one pin at 25 yds so I mark my trees at 25 yds. That way, any deer inside this radius you are all set. There are a few good ones for $200.

  14. As an older hunter, almost 57, I've hunted since I was 16. Never missed an opening day. Took up bowhunting 6 years ago... duh why did I wait?

Anyway... I was always a cheapskate when it came to binos. When I add up the all the $69 and the $75 and the $119 and the $139 or so I have spent over the years I shoulda spent the $450+/- I spent a few seasons ago. I bought a pair of Zeiss 10X30, fairly small and compact. Really... just bite the bullet and buy one good pair that will last for ever.

A good set of binos are so valuable.
