  1. I've got a small amount of land behind my house that I've avoided hunting because my neighbors are very close. There is an active deer trail that runs right through it -- lots of droppings and fresh tracks. I spoke to the neighbor's wife, and she said they have no problem with me hunting. In fact, her brother and uncle hunt their land, which is just behind mine. So, I'm thinking about trying to get ready for next year. A few newbie questions, however: 1) My neighbor's people will be hunting about 200 yards up the deer trail from my land. Will this significantly hurt the chances of any deer getting down to me? I expect that there's no good answer to this. 2) I'd like to build a tree stand. I haven't started searching the Net, but I thought someone here might have some good plans or links to plans. 3) Is it worth planting something? The trail runs through a small "gully". There is a small hill on one side, a stream, and then thick brush on the other. The flat part in the middle -- probably only 30 yards wide -- is fairly open, with grass. I figured I could plant something if it will bring the deer. I've looked at the planting forum here, and those are way more intense than what I'm considering. Any ideas? (I'm guessing this isn't enough information. Unfortunately, I didn't get a picture of the trail."
  2. I was hunting in 4Z and 3F. I saw a bunch of does in 4Z, but didn't have a permit. Nothing at all in 3F, although my neighbor told me he's had a couple of big bucks in his back yard. I sat there for 4 hours and didn't see them. My neighbors on the other side told me they didn't see anything either. Very cold; very frustrating.
  3. Nothing for me. I spent Saturday and Sunday in Columbia Cty (4Z), and saw four does. The past two days I was in 4F, near the border of Salt Point and Hyde Park. I didn't see anything; neither did the other hunters I spoke with. My neighbor told me that two big bucks have been in his back yard every afternoon at 3:30ish. I sat out there for 4 hour today and didn't see a thing. Hopefully the rain wont be too bad tomorrow.
  4. I'm in 4Z. Yesterday there was a round of shots at sunrise. It's been pretty quiet today I saw two does yesterday and two more today. The Only bucks were on the side of the road as I drive by. Oh, and the pictures my friend emailed me if deer in their yard.
  5. I love how people use hunt as a verb. Seems like it should be "go out and hope."
  6. I went out early this morning on a friend's land in 4Z. I saw two does, but, alas, my dmp is for 3 F. No buck. Is it worth going out again at 3ish? Or is morning the best time?
  7. When my friend asked me why I want to kill a deer, I pointed out the most of them were suicidal, and I was just helping end their misery.
  8. Have a 3F, would like a 4Z (Southeast Columbia County).

    DMP

    I have a 3F, and I'd lve to trade for a 4Z ( Southeast Columbia Cty).
  10. I'll give Fox a call, because I don't even know what you guys mean by "cape". (I'm pretty sure, but I'm new at this.)
  11. Thanks. I hope to do the butchering myself . . .
  12. I'm hopeful that I'll get my first buck this year. If I do, I want to mount the head. 1) Can someone explain how I should clean/butcher the deer to preserve the head for mounting? 2) Can someone recommend a place in Dutchess county to take the head? Thanks in advance.
  13. Am I correct that with a DMP, I can take any anterless deer in the zone? Size doesn't matter?
  14. I've got about 5 boxes of Lightfield Hybred 12g sabot slugs that have been sitting in a closet for two years. It has been a very humid summer and I got some mold in the closet (not on the boxes). Do I have to worry about using these?
  15. Thanks everyone. No gun safe, but I'll let him know.
  16. Thanks everyone. Looks like I'm getting permission to hunt a friend's 150 protected acres this year, so hopefully I'll get my deer. I've been watching youtube videos on processing. I'm feeling positive.
  17. A friend of mine is moving and he asked if he could store about ten rifles at my place until he's settled. I assume that this is kosher? I'm not taking ownerhip, and don't have to register the rifles that are going to be at my place?
  18. Two years in a row I've sat out in the cold thinking, "really, what are the chances that a deer is going to walk by?" And it didn't.
  19. I'm getting ready for my third season and, dang it, I really want to get something this time. But I realized I need to do some prep. Let's see I get a deer and dress it in the field. When I get back to my house, I need to hang it, right? How high does it have to hang? I'm in Dutchess County, so there aren't a lot of coyotes or bear, but there are some. Is there a maximum temperature for hanging? I.e., what do I do if it's 60* outside? Just go ahead an start butchering?
  20. Can someone tell me what these are all about? Hot to get one? When they're good for? I assume they're different from nuisance permits?
  21. Day three. I saw two does yesterday. They were about 20 yds in front of me, just looking at me as I picked up my gun. But I don't have a doe permit. I'm convinced there are no other deer within 10 miles of me.
  22. Just got back from walking my friend's land. He's got a blind for me. He showed me where the other guys will be off to the sides -- and they'll know where I'll be. Looks comfy, and shielded from the wind. Fingers crossed.
  23. My neighbor has a small tree farm on his property, and he says he has a nuisance permit that allows him to take up to ten deer, any sex, any time after the regular season ends. I'm trying to find info on the DEC site, but coming up short. Anyone know about these? Can I hunt his land with that permit? Thanks.
