  1. I got a fetish for sharp knives  .I got a diamond stone that's about 25 yrs old and a few other stones. I bought the small smith pocket pal that I use for broadheads and when I go fishing to sharpen my hooks. I  have some steals but they are only good to touch up as im using the knife and I have a couple of pull through sharpeners good ones from smiths. I just bought the Bavarian edge I kept seeing it in bj's and bed bath and beyond so  figured what the hell its $20 but it seems to work I mean a decent edge but to really get a good edge its a whet stone oiled and a constant angle I use a 22 deg angle. what you can do is to use a sharpie on the edge and that will help to keep a constant angle also hold the blade @ a 90o angle then cut that in half [eyeball it] that's 45 and half again that's 221/2 believe me it works .the pull thoughs work fine see I butcher my own deer and filet my own fish so they are constantly getting dull.

  2. I got that same call and well in Brooklyn and queens the squirrels love it but usually they just stop and freeze even come around a tree and expose themselves.See I work for the gas co. and walk around looking for leaks and I was in forest hills a very exclusive area  [nosey nasty people ] I was trying my call on some squirrels and this guy looks @ me and I said to him see what this job did to me 35 yrs and they got me talking to squirrels [see you got to act as nutty as they do and they leave you alone the people I mean not the squirrels lol]

  3. I never understood the concept of the short magnum its an oxymoron .I mean magnum means huge a marketing ploy started by the Champaign industry and picked up by the ammo industry [kinda like jumbo meaning huge started by p.t. Barnum after the elephant ] Talk about obsolete I have 32 spec. ammo my dad left me it was for a gun he had a Winchester 1912 model '94 in 32 spec. . I seen rounds go though the bell curve starts out as the best thing there is touted by all the outdoor writers and celebrity hunters then it goes by the way side[ you know how much sh*t I bought as seen on t.v. that's used once maybe twice ,the only thing I still use regularly is the George forman] . It seems we all come back to the same thing 30-06/.270/.308 and yeah even the 30-30.

  4. I bought a Remington 30-06 beautiful gun BUT  it had a cheap simmons scope and see-thru sites so my friend I hunt with sold me the same scope you have and its says on the bell 30-06 180 gr .What I did I went on cabelas and midway usa and brownells  looking for proper bases and rings ,cabelas had the ones specific to that rifle and a choice of high base -med- low [I got the medium cause of the 40mm bell] .WOW what a difference  I didn't have to crane my neck or push the rifle butt in to my shoulder to see the crosshairs. See I shot @ a buck once twice [missed],and the third time I aimed almost@ his ass and hit him in the neck so im glad I got a new bases and rings and scope.

Gman - are you stirring the pot with another weight ESTIMATE chart.   I am buying everyone a scale for Christmas.  You are all on your own to figure out the water weight dilemma.

yeah but moog  what about if your on a trip to say alberta  or maine and don't have access to a scale plus atleast you can judge what meat you can expect back from the processor[ HA! good lucky!!!!] with this one but I cut that deer up and had made stew /grind from the trimmings and it was closer to 50-60 lbs [ trimmed of bloodshot meat and fat]

  6. no I know I do it too BUT see how much meat was on the skin, what I do is cut the skin off the hams and legs and up the neck then hook it up to my atv or if im home me and my neighbor just pull it down  warm or cold It comes off pretty easily most important is to take my time the hair get all over the place. What I do after I skin it is I take a propane torch to it and singe all the hair off [ LIGHTLY DONT COOK THE MEAT] then wipe the meat down with a damp cloth . Oh and WATCH  the ticks I butcher and skin in my camo bow out fit [see the bow seasons done and it still has the sawyers on it] and the end of the season I wash everything and store w/ some scent wafers in my storage box

hes good ,my friend brought his head from alberta there. He had some meat cut up in a box ready to wrap and he had back straps and some roast and some steaks .He get $100. I do my own so I am fussy and get a lot of grind but you have to understand these guys are busy and they just do the primal cuts no neck and no grind or stew meat . I have a guy in howard beach a butcher I get a crown roast for Christmas and  leg of lamb for easter he wants me to skin it[ the city health dept gets on butchers about the hair so I figured if im going to skin it its another 2 hrs work to cut it and vacuum seal it PLUS make stew meat and grind

What ever you get .. get a rod tube . Break it down and use the damn tube every time you put it in the car. We all break rods accidents.happen . But most decent rods start in hundreds it hurts to break a tip off  and there is no real repair  that can make a flyy rod whole.

I second that I learned the hard way

  9. In my prayers for a speedy recovery. I always get cramps in my legs I got the double wammy diabetes and poor circulation ,I get bad episodes ,once on the Teutonic pkway  I got hit bad and I just kept driving it wasn't that bad as long as I had the cruise control on and could keep my legs stretched but I hit the Bronx[ what else is new] and I had to get out and walk ,I must have had 10 people stop thinking I was having a heart attack including  a trooper. I  got home but it happens all of a sudden .I take magnesium citrate and tonic water and some sh*t the doctor gave me that I cant pronounce But when I get hit its like you its  debilitating .I see a cardio vascular guy and I get sonograms on my legs [if im nice the girl that does it heats the gel if im a bad boy she doesn't I swear that's what she says]

  10. dicks ,cabelas all seel comb sets I got a 5 wt which is perfect .Just you tube to see how to cast and ty knots[I orginally I fished fresh water and a lot of that was fly  but being from nyc I fished salt and about 10 yrs ago I got back into it but it was a learning curve. Speaking of you tube look for lady fly fishing w/ her feet it will make you cry see she had polio as a kid and had limited use of her arms and  cast with her legs its by orvis

  11. tell him mice don't eat meat and mice HATE raw meat and will not go near it . How ever rats love meat So as long as your not in nyc your ok  . Your meats fine the longer it hangs [in cold temps below 40 degs ] the better . I posted asking about my meat cause it froze then rained and went to 50 but guys told me it was ok and it was fine also see all the dried meat that's exposed to air has to be trimmed away any way [that's why I always pull my tenderloins when I field dress so they don't shrivel up].

  12. from what I was told by a guy who shot a deer in penn and their d.e.c checked the residue on the teeth . From what he said was that a ''anonymous'' call said he was baiting deer and they went to his house and checked the deer he had hanging .He came up clean but if there was there was enough evidence they do their csi

  13. well I finally been able to post a pic of my deer .See I got a flip phone [hey its free from work] and cant e-mail so I had to depend on my son [well I took over a week but he finally sent them to my e-mail]. The story with this deer is I just bought a nice 30-06 Remington 700 but it had see thru bases I really didn't like and a cheap simmons scope and I never really had a chance to sight it in proper only a few shots and it seemed ok . Well im in the stand and im like screw this they aint moving well up @ the tree line I see a doe this was @ 4pm then @ 4:10 I seen him walking through the middle of the field and I made sure he had 3 on one side @ lest and I  aimed @ his shoulder and took the shot he keeps walking in no hurry I shot a gain im like wtf then I aimed @ the end of his ribcage. Well I seen him go down I get out of the tree and I left my gun and backpack hanging on the pull up ropes [really dumb] I walk over to him and I smelled him [he stunk to holy hell] before I seen him  [ he was rutting really hard, all the bucks I seen were they all looked really tired]. I was like oh no I gut shot him but I see his antlers moving and I had my worst fear hes still alive. I get there and roll him over and see I shot him in the neck. Well  I went back and got the gun and pack I load another round and took a shot and that was it but man it still bothers me to this day see with a bow I shoot constantly no way I want to wound a deer but with a rifle I took a few shots while I could and said that was ok but I never ever will take a chance like that again .I will make sure I have good equipment and know the rifles dead on . I try to take ethical shots I passed on deer and yes bucks because I didn't feel comfortable with the shot. Sorry about the lousy pic my neighbor whos even worse than my with these phones
