To the fellow who inquired about using a 16 gauge for turkeys,
As long as you are aware of how your gun patterns and at what range it is effective and do not shoot past that distance, go for it. You will not be able to shoot at birds that hang up past your guns range that some hunters with magnum extra full choke shotguns can shoot and kill. All depends on whether you are ok with passing up some shots. Good luck with your turkey quest. To me the fun is in the calling and hunt, the pulling of the trigger is secondary. But that is just where this old man is at after hunting turkeys for over 40 years.

There are several of these type of videos posted on YouTube that show poor innocent young fisherman being harassed by older property owners. These videos tend to get a lot of views. I would bet the landowner has it posted and it is private.

Famous Celebrity Woodchuck "Punxsutawney Phil" made his prediction today. Unknown Backwoods Raccoon "Poverty Hill Pete" made the exact same prediction three days earlier. Poverty Hill Pete’s prediction was recorded and published on Youtube. "Poverty Hill Pete" could not be reached for comment but his friend Brian shown in this picture (attached) with Pete was quoted saying. I’m glad to see Pete finally getting the recognition he deserves but I hope it does not give him a big head.

I made this video awhile back about Jon-e hand warmers. They work very well except for the smell.

Log cabin shop (web site) has the patches, round balls and percussion caps. You should be able to pick up pyrodox powder local if you look around. True black powder may be a bit harder to find. That gun was designed to shoot patched round ball or maxi balls. If I was you I would check the nipple to make sure it is clear as that normally the biggest issue if the gun was neglected. Even pyrodox powder can cause fouling if the gun was not cleaned properly after it is shoot. Good luck with your new gun

Morning hunt with my grandson today. This is first chance to get out this season. He is using the moss berg rifled shotgun and I am using my old Remington smoothbore . Fingers crossed he gets a buck today. As far as me just being out with him is a good day for me

I work in a grammar school. Wearing a mask has been mandatory for me if I am indoors since all of this Covid stuff started. No mask required when I am cutting grass or plowing snow. Can’t wait every day to get home and breathe.

Ran into a young hunter this morning. Both he and I were headed to the same spot to sit. I said I would go back further up the hill. Very nice young man said I could have the spot and he would walk further back. He did not have to do that, maybe he felt sorry for a old guy? I hope his kind gesture is rewarded with a big buck today! By the way it is another quiet day here for me.

Slow day for me. Congratulations to all of you who got a deer today. Few minutes left so maybe something still will happen.

Be ready I have several questions about all kinds of things.

…and a few more Picts from the weekend.
Got my bobcat and one of the fishers sealed…enjoyed trading stories with the ECO…very nice guy! Also set a few more fisher and bobcat traps, and a couple bait sets for muskrats. I’m going to see if I can find a spot to set for mink tomorrow and try to catch a couple more weasels.
Dino,
Enjoying the posts from your trip. See you when you get back.

48 years ago I took my hunter ed safety course and became a legal hunter.
Never missed a opening day of firearm big game season in all those years.
I am a average hunter with average success.
Still learning to become a above average hunter.

Camp set up looks awesome and it looks like you're doing pretty good with the trapping.
I have to ask, is that knife in the pics a modded Old Hickory?
I was wondering about that knife also. Looks a bit like a green river blade with a custom handle. Probably carbon steel. Looks kinda like the one I made and gave to Dino.

Just having a little fun. I recorded it one night at the cabin. Gets dark real early and being alone it is a very long night. Hope I did not offend anybody. Like I said it was goofy.

tree blind? Is a tree blind a elevated tree stand? If so I've never seen anybody hunt turkeys that way. Deer yes but never turkeys. I have always hunted them from the ground with my back to a tree but I am a old school turkey hunter.
Unrelated to your original gun question or your elevated blind tactic - I saw a ad for a portable blind that looked like a turkeys fan that I suppose you are to put in front of you as you stalk a turkey? Seemed like a good way to get shot but like I said I hunt a old school and was taught to never stalk a spring turkey.
