  1. Nice group but you missed the dime ..... ::D

    Very cool,and very accurate.

Those were the 1st 3 shots on paper W/that particular bullet. I had thrown together some loads W/"Quickload data. I ran some over the chronograph to check Mv & pressure signs shooting off my deck the day before. That load showed great (minimal) Standard Deviation.

I loaded up a few rounds & went to the range the next day. Needless to say I did not feel that I needed to do any more load developemnThat very same load did a number on the 2 Whitetail bucks I shiot @ W/it.

Both @ about 245yds, One was DRT, the other, hit @ a bad angle went about 15 yds.

  2. BTW: IF you ever decide to use a bicycle for hunting access, it is considered a "vehicle" & as such, you may NOT have a loaded gun in your posession when riding a bicycle.

actually this is not true. The only thing considered a vehicle has to have motor power. Hence the laws stating motor vehicle. In fact and it is a big bone of contention here in my area, an amish buggy pulled by a horse is not considered a motor vehice and they can have loaded guns in the buggy.

If you want to argue W/a DEC officer that's your business.

I was informed about this regulation by a DEC officer as I was getting a camping permit for the big game season on that very trip.

  3. Dose'nt the rifle bounce around on your back, knocking off the zero of the scope?

No, I keep the rifle slung across my back (over the right shoulder, under the left arm) W/a fanny pack slung likewise under it. The weapon is snug to my back & it kinda rests on the fanny pack for stability.

Besides, the rifle has "LOW" Leupold bases/rings mounting a Leupold VX-II scope.

It would take a lot of impact to knock the zero off.

    The gun is quite accurate.

  4. Hmmm.. looks like he's dumping in the road!! Get back in the woods!!!

I think they prefer to "dump" on forest trails. (Kinda like a "signpost" to mark territory?)

I find LOTS of scat piles when I ride my mountain bike on the trails around Saranac Lake.

I even came across a large bear on the Meacham Lake trail near the Loon Lake end.

    BearRidingBike.jpg  :D  JK W/the pic, but I really did see a bear.

All that sign got me motivated to try some early season bear hunting last September.

I used my mountain bike to get back in the boonies quickly & quietly.

Here's a picture from my camp on Mountain Pond.

  5. Nice looking mount.  :D

Not to pry but could you say aprox what that cost to get done?

I made payments over the course of a year & my wife made the final payment. I threw away the recipt once  it was paid off so I don't remember exactly what the cost was.

I think the total W/tax was about $420. That included cleaning & bleaching the jaw bone. If memory serves me correctly, the mount was $375.

The taxidermist is local & this is a somewhat economically depressed area so his prices are probably a bit lower than most. I don't think the "wall pedestal" mount cost me any more than a what a standard shoulder mount would.

  6. I shot "Butch" after watching him grow over the 2 years since I 1st saw him as a narrow but tall basket rack during the '07 season.

I harvested him on November 15th of '09.

Financial difficulties had me paying a little @ a time & I still owed a pretty good chunk this past December.

My wife sent my son up to the taxidermy shop on Christmas eve to bail "Buth" out of jail, & she surprised me on Christmas morning.

I had him done as a "wall pedestal mount" so that I could get the pose as close as possible to when I took the shot.

He was looking back over his shoulder @ me when I noisely chamberd a round after dropping the pin on an empty chamber.  ???

I yanked the trigger,  pulled the shot about 6" left (@ 240 yds) & hit him right behind the left ear.  ::)

Fortunately, @ that distance, the 139gr 284 Hornady Interbond had lost enough speed from the 3150fps Mv to not do a lot of cape damage.

  7. If it is northern tier, not only is he trespassing but he is also carrying a rifle during muzzleloader season.

I doubt it's the northern tier since he is wearing orange.

The general attitude up in these parts seems to be that wearing orange while hunting is akin to having sex W/your kin.  :)

Personally I think they resist wearing orange so they can trespass W/O being seen.

I have a neighbor that is a non-hunter & I tell him that if he sees anyone on my place that is NOT wearing orange, he is to call me.

Everyone that hunts my place (that's not many) is required to wear orange.

  8. Welcome. Part of my family is from up around that area in Bombay.

I've ridden my bicycle through Bombay.

Probably 10 miles or so from me.

I am sure that did not take long!! One of those blink and miss it spots!!

Helena, Fort Covington, North Lawrence, Moira, Brasher Falls, they're all about like that.

Still they are all bigger than Roosevelttown.

  9. Grouse are one of the most elusive game birds. They are truly a challenge and a worthwhile trophy. Some grouse tails I've saved over the years. Displayed to denote the different color variations found (gray, brown, or sometimes referred to as red or a combination of both):

Colorations and locales they were taken:

Not that I think there are trophy grouse out there, but this was the largest grouse tail I've ever measured in forty years:

    Mainegrouse2003.jpg

Most (nearly all) Grouse around here (northern St. Lawrence Co.) are brown phase.  A few years back there was a gray phase bird around but unfortunately, I found his remains after a hawk got him.

They are really striking in appearance when all you've seen are brown phase birds.

  10. I found this site while googling empirehunting.com.

I was a member over there for about 6 months before it went belly-up.

I have a 106 acre farm near where the Canadian border meets the St. Lawrence river. I've taken many deer from my farm. This past summer I came across a large Black Bear while mountain biking near Mechem Lake in the ADKs. I found so much bear scat on the trails in that area I took up bear hunting.

I found some promising looking areas & some stale sign while hunting, but no bears.

I'm hoping to get some dope on how to hunt bear in the early season in the ADKs.
