Biz, do you harvest the tomatoes when they are yellow and let them ripen up (turn red) on the counter?

So none of my 30-06 rifles shoot a that well with Hornady eldx ammo despite I've gotten that ammo to shoot great in other rifles. Switched back to federal fusion (bonded) 150gr for this bear hunt. Got it dialed in dead on at 50 yards and real close to 200 yards for a zero. Pic is last shot at 50 yards.

Wanting to bring a safe queen Remington 742 that was my grandfathers but it didn't shoot well with either of that ammo. Another trip to the range to dial in a backup 7mm-08 or see if the 742 will like green box core-lokts i have for my dad's gun better.20220814_133832.jpg20220814_134018.jpg

I have a 724 Woodmaster and I use Winchester Supreme ballistic silver tips in it and I have not had an issue. I thought I was the only person on this forum who would admit to using a 742 :)

Good quality equipment is a given, half assed equipment can make for a half assed hunt. For me the most indispensable item is a good quality compass, I am a wanderer for Deer and when hunting Rabbits, Hare or Coon with dogs you can end up a long way from where you started, it is easy to get turned around in big woods, learning to use and having a good compass makes getting back to the truck easy.

    Al

Your going to accidentally start a whole other thread on compasses.

it works but not how some recommend like using twine or dropping trees. also if you pinch things in too much and make them feel uncomfortable like they can't escape how they want, they'll just skirt the whole area all together. you give them a reason to desire to go where you are. in open hardwoods thin a few spots to create patches of browse. do that around your stand too as long as you keep back cover to hide you in the tree. for food plots you can plant screening to section a food plot open a spot to walk through close to your stand or blind. streams you can knock down banks with equipment in a certain spot close to where your stand is easier to hunt and not get busted. i've used mock scrapes and curiosity scents that turned into spots the deer left scent and kept maintained themselves. fallow fields i've mowed a strip this time of year so there's some young lush green stuff to browse as they walk by vs matured weeds. you're enticing them not forcing them.

i would never do the t shirt idea. you're adding your presence which is bad depending on any specific deer how it handles presence. also even if they deer stayed the shirt will develop its own odor that the deer get used to and eventually ignore anyway. it won't help you either because they smell a presence from you X days old and you on stand will smell more and different. my thoughts anyway.

I have used some of those techniques also. I brush hog a winding lane through the middle of my fields, and i find that the doe will use that path over trying to fight through the thick weeds. I have a stand that is surrounded by thick briars, and I cut a path through them every year. the deer will start using it the next day.

I try to create paths of least resistance in some areas and install resistance in other areas. The other parts of the equation are using the natural terrain to your advantage and using their existing travel routes. my goal is to "gently" guide them.

  5. I have not tried the smelly shirt thing, but I have cleared and blocked trails. I had loggers on my property a few years ago and the tops they left completely changed travel routes. I used it to my advantage and opened new travel routes to pass closer to my stand locations. I also built-up barriers using tops and branches to redirect. It was amazing on how fast this worked. I found tracks on the "new" trails within a few days. I have created a few pinch points or funnels over the last few years. It doesn't need to be done all at once. I've settled into incremental improvement, I do a little every year and see what works and what doesn't.

I would also say that most of the new movement are doe who tend to travel in groups. Lone bucks seem to like the super thick travel routes and are harder to influence, but during the rut the bucks come to the doe.

haha totally fair. I'm in the weird spot where some of my hunting land is rifle country and some is shotgun, so admittedly I do not shoot my 12 gauge a lot, but I always check the zero. Honestly it's just not a fun gun to shoot. That said, I have good glass on it and I do consider myself a decent shot and spend some good time and money at the range shooting all sorts of guns that I used to own before my boat tipped over this spring.

I am the kind of hunter that will look for any advantage and generally want the best of the best. But I will also say that for upstate NY shotgun hunting, I can't imagine any decent slug offered out there in the hands of a capable shooter wont group in the large vital area of a deer at 100 yards, and even with a novice shooter you should still get pie plate groups. I have shot them 3 years in a row and every year still getting 3" groups. So i'm happy.

disclosure. I have no stock in hornady lol

yeah that's why I liked the lightfields. I've never even taken a shot at 100 yards and preferred the weight to the distance.

You are also absolutely right. Every gun is different. Is your 535 rifled?

Yes, I purchased the 24" rifled, cantilever barrel for it when I bought the gun. It was my first Mossberg and is my preferred gun for hunting almost everything. I also had a tragic boating accident where all of my other firearms were lost but, I still preferred it over many of my rifles. There's just something comforting about using a .50 cal. slug.

  7. I wish someone had mentored me on this when I was younger. I could have saved myself a lot of money.

1 - Quality boots and clothing. (things that are going to keep you warm and dry, not the newest camo pattern) A hand muff with some HotHands was one of the best and cheapest purchases I ever made.

2 - Firearm in a tried-and-true caliber that is readily available

3 - Quality optics - again doesn't need to be the most expensive. I use Nikon ProStaff on almost everything. and don't get overly high-powered magnification. you're not going to be taking 600yrd shoots anytime soon.

4 - Functional pack for the type of hunting they will be doing. I like a small pack with multiple pockets to keep my gear separated.

5 - Seat pad or chair (how will you keep your ass warm and dry)

Parting advice: Keep it simple, the more crap you bring into the woods the more noise and movement you tend to make., and the more weight you end up carrying around. Leave the toys and gadgets for the guys on TV.

What gun are your shooting ? Tried the sst’s in the boys Remington 870 20 gauge and they shot terrible . My Remi 870 12 and his 20 loved  the copper solids . I killed a ton of deer with them .

Mossberg 535 ATS. But like I said earlier I have not used them in my gun. My only experience with then was in my BIL's 870.

what ranges were you siting in at with the SST's?

It was a new gun and scope so we started with the laser bore sight and moved to 25 yrds to get it on paper. after that we moved out to 50 and 75. We would have a good group, then a bad group. it was frustrating to say the least. He was using an 870 with a rifled cantilever barrel.

I typically stick with my Mossberg 535 ATS, and I do believe that certain guns like certain ammo. What works well for one may not work well for the other. I also hunt thick woods, so I do not need 150-yard accuracy. I prefer a heavier bullet for the "knock down" and most of the deer I have taken on the property have been within 40-50 yards.

Accutips - and when you find them, but every single box so you have a stock pile. Sabots are hard to come by in the premier offerings like the Accutips. You'll see a split on fans of the Hornady SSTs - some people like them and some do not. I am most definitely in the do not category. They run hot IMO and across the board been inconsistent lot to lot for me any time I have ever tried them.

Winchester and Federal offer other premier options, but those too, can be rare.

I bit the bullet, pun intended, and have 15 ish boxes of Accutips. Two seasons ago we ran into a big issue finding them. Should be more available than 2020 or 2021 but still, not easy, to find.

Hint - Batavia Dick's store has a few boxes of 12 g Accutips as of Sunday. Pricing was not cheap but again, is what it is.

I see that Bass pro has some Accutips and they have a 5-box max limit on them. They are $25 per box.

The reviews of SST's seems to line up. Some people love them, most people hate them. My Brother IL tried them last year and we had issues keeping a group at 75 yards. Even with a Caldwell lead sled the shots were all over. we would get 2 shoots within an inch or two and the third would be a flyer that was off by 6-8".  we checked the gun and scope and after multiple boxes we switched back to the Winchesters.

  11. I have been using Winchester Supreme 12 ga. sabot slugs (below) for years. Over the last few years, they have been increasingly difficult to find. I see Hornady and Remington available but I don't have any experience using them. Anyone have positive experience with other brands? If I have to re-sight in my shotgun, I only want to do it once.

We only use non-scented detergent year round anyway, but come hunting season i only use unscented soap/shampoo. I don't drink coffee before morning hunts. I leave my hunting clothes outside overnight or in my truck during the season. I usually spray them down unscented the night before hunting. I've had a ton of close encounters with deer on the ground (no blind) that never spooked, so I'm sticking with what I have always done.

Yes, playing the wind certainly helps as well. So does sound. Many times if my bowhunt walk in is under 250 yards ill bring nothing except my bow, quiver, binocs, and cell phone. Less is more. I can always go back to truck to get my tracking, dragging and gutting stuff.

I don't have the balls or the deer herd to pull a @Nomad and wear Coolwater cologne when hunting!

Wait one minute... You don't drink coffee in the morning? What kind of a psychopath gets up at 4am when it's 32* outside and doesn't have a cup of coffee?

I literally bring 2 thermoses of black coffee with me after I finish my morning coffee.

why would you assume it's true for your hunting spot? The DEC looks at regions in totality, which often includes burbs and public parks that are off limits. There is no reason to believe your 40 acres has too many doe. Only you and evidence like browse pressure and trail cam pics can determine if you should be taking more doe.

I wouldn't say I'm assuming, I know roughly how many deer are on my property because I live here and see them every day. I see the new fawns every year, and I see the numbers on my trail cams. I am also familiar with my neighbors and what gets harvested on their properties. I know I am in a region that the DEC considers having a high number of doe and I have only harvested 2 doe in the last 3 years. Most of the larger fruit farms around here have started installing high fences to cut down on crop loss which also limits food resources for the herd.

I would probably call it more of an educated guess based on deductive reasoning. which sounds better than ass-uming.

  14. I've never really considered myself a meat hunter or a horn hunter, and I have never really made an effort to "control" the doe population.  If I see a mature deer, I will typically take it and i usually only take 1 or 2 deer a year. This year will be a little different. I plan on putting 3 deer in the freezer and I have a few family members that I will be pushing to harvest does.

I always like seeing a big herd of deer in the back field, but I also realize that big numbers don't always equal a healthy herd.

  15. I hunt in 8F and last year the idea of getting out with a gun before bow season just didn't feel right to me. But I think I am warming up to it. Obviously, the DEC believes we have too many doe in these areas and assuming this is true, it should theoretically be beneficial to the overall herd.

    What does everyone else think?

  16. A big consideration in this should also be service. It WILL eventually need service. If the dealership has a good reputation and is close by, it can make a big difference in the total cost of ownership. Some of the New Holland/LS dealers that look like lawn tractor sales places probably don't have the same parts inventory or service center as a larger dealership.

It sounds like the Massy dealer is close by and if they have good reviews, it may be the best choice for you. I would just avoid some of the tractors that are coming from Korea and India. I have heard horror stories form people trying to get parts and service.
