Early
I'd like to take a deer with my 16 ga. smoothbore this Fall. I can get great results on paper with plain old off-the-shelf Foster slugs, either Winchester or Federal. Any suggestions for other slugs (not sabots, obviously) that I should try during late summer target shooting to see if I can improve on the Fosters' performance? Pygmy
I suspect that the selection of 16 gauge slugs is somwhat limited. However, the 16 gauge is still quite popular in Europe, so I'm sure you can find some Brenneke slugs. When I was shooting smoothbore my 20 gauge 1100 shot Fiocchi Brennekes very well, and performance on game was excellent. Better in my opinion than foster style rifled slugs, which I felt sometimes did not penetrate well. I have an expanded 20 gauge brenneke in my " recovered projectiles" collection that traveled nearly stern to stem of a whitetail. The deer was wounded and the only shot I had was a Texas heart shot on a running deer. The slug entered a ham and came to rest under the hide on the brisket.
