Manage your wood lot for turkey...

Recommended Posts

Sometimes we can do some very simple things in the woods to improve our chances of getting turkey to come in and hang out....Just pick up sticks.

See in some wood lots  you will get a lot of downed branches and twigs...especially in maturing "slashings". What happens is you can get a few layers of 1/2 to 1 in. 3-6ft long branches or young dead trees under a few layers of leaf cover. Turkey are scratchers...and these wood lots have lots of food, but it is too difficult if not near impossible for them to get to. So they feed in the easier spots.

So when scouting an area look and feel whats under your feet.....lots of time we can't see just how thick this lattice of branches are until we start pulling them out of the leaf cover....

You do not need to do huge areas to see improvement...for once you start pulling and dragging these branches...you disturb the leaf litter and turkey in the area will see this and investigate...once they discover the food and ease of feeding...they will return...I've been doing this every winter/spring and it works.
