eagle rider
Buddy calls about a two hours ago: Buddy: "Eagle (not my name but since its my online handle, I'll go with it), you home,... where you at cuz?" Me: "Home drinking beers and watching football, whatcha needing?" Buddy: "Just came from the range with a new used rifle, couldn't hit the water from a boat at 100 yds with it." (now I know this guy, and he isn't exactly Sgt. York, opps I just dated myself. But he can shoot a 100 yd deer group well enough). Me: "Yeah bring it over here." Okay so he shows up 20 minutes later looking all upset with a rifle case in his hand at the front door. Get down to the basement and put the rifle on the bench, its a used BAR Safari in 308 Win. with a new Vortex, Weaver bases and rings on it Nice enough rifle, just personally think BAR's are best suited for standard length cartridges (you'll all yell at me later for that I'm sure). Me: "rifle cycles like it should? Buddy (real name Dale): "yeah, runs like a sewing machine, just wasted $40 in ammo to shoot 3" groups." Me: "Okay, lets see what the deal is." Rifle is on the bench action opened light inside chamber, nice sharp rifling, a little fouled up but he just came from the range, I douche the bore for him with some #9. Next stop frond off to check the regulator setting, piston and buffer, because in my experience any one of those can make for a sloppy BAR performer. All seemed good, but we gave it a good cleanup as well. I even gave him a new nylon buffer, the action spring seemed fine and I didn't have an extra to part with anyways. Me: "I duuno Dale she seems like it should be well enough to give you an 1.5" group, what kind of ammo were you shooting today?" With that I put my hand on the top of the rifle in vise on the scope and I can swear it didn't feel solid. Me again: "Dale, did the scope come with the glass or did you buy it?" Buddy: "I went to Dicks for the glass, the kid there installed it for me." I take the scope off and what do you know, the base has a little play in it. Back out one of the screws, and.... NO LOCTITE on the base screws. Zero, nada! Goop up the screws with blue loctite, put his gun back together, and tell him to go back to the range tomorrow, the rifle will group now. eagle rider
yeah, he's a nice enough guy but has the horse sense of a box of marbles. Good in his trade, and his trade isn't curing cancer if you know what I mean. I agree best way to screw you up is to let those guys work on your stuff. Good for lining a reel is all.
